    XP SP2 Install problem

I'm trying to fix a friends computer, and was installing sp2 on it. It works fine before hand except one thing (which I think I fixed, but I haven't had enough time using it to make sure it's gone) - the cd drive would stop working randomly, power and all. I just changed the connector inside and it seemed to fix it.

Anyway, I install SP2, restart; and get a blue screen like this:http://img98.imageshack.us/img98/3862/blueca4.jpg

I could boot into recovery console and try to copy the backup registry files (wherever they are I can't remember atm) but I don't think that would fix it as they are sp1? or if not they are sp2 and won't work anyways I'd think.

Tried it twice (I reformatted and did it again and same problem happened) any ideas what to do?

hmm.. chkdsk keeps freezing, guess I should replace the hdd

edit: nvm... it's just going up about 55% then 1% every 3-5 mins, thought it froze.

chkdsk can take hours and hours, if you're lucky it'll fix up the NTFS though.

If it resets like that, it means it found a problem and is working on fixing it. Just let it go until it finishes, it should fix your problems (hopefully)

chkdsk finished, and where the xp boot screen would be with the progress bar animation now is just a black screen, numlock buttons are non-responsive and ctrl alt del won't work to restart it so going with it freezes it now thinking that maybe getting a new hdd would fix it. It's an old computer so maybe the hdd is just too old.

    dl'd that shue, thanks :D

I also dug around and found another hdd to use and reformatted/installed xp on that, installed sp2, on restart it told me it found and replaced a damaged or missing reg. file, and when it makes it to the desktop explorer.exe keeps having errors with the send/don't send error reports, and I can't restart it cus it just keeps making an error every time, running chkdsk again right now, /sigh
