New PC Build Time - Now with finished product.

    Full list go
    https://secure.newegg.com/NewVersion/Wi ... e=SpehNeww
    What say you?

Looking around to build a new PC again.

Starting off with CPU and MB.

    I think for a CPU Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 Kentsfield 2.4GHz http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6819115017 takes the cake I think.
    Changed mind to E8500.

MB I always have a bit of trouble on, hard to balanace quality/price, trying for for X38 (48 is still a bit too expensive for the minor improvment), and im looking at http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6813128089 at the moment.

After CPU/MB, rest should be easy.

Would personally buy an E8400 over the Q6600, but they're much of a muchness, just depends on how you'll use it.

Was up in the air with that one as well. Going to be running 32bit XP, not bothering with Vista; im sure E8400 would be fine though. Wont be doing much with it really, FFXI will be the biggest thing, but may be running Photoshop or MovieMaker in the background, and then the usual internets, music, video all at the same time multitasking.

Not really sure which would be better.

    Re: New PC Build Time

I suspect for gaming the E8400 would be better, take a browse on www.tomshardware.com and check out some benchtests?

    Re: New PC Build Time

I'd opt for E8500 and thats what I'm going to get when I do upgrade

    Re: New PC Build Time

Aye, the E8500 will be better, but costs $60 more than the Q6600 whereas the E8400 is $30 cheaper.

Damn.. 8500 is sexy.. might have to go that route..
I dont think id ever get up to using all 4cores, so id rather have 2 @3.16, than [email protected] (Q9300) with the other 2 not being used..

    Hmmmmmmm

I think the E8500 is the winner atm. Now just to find a good MB to compliment it. Im a fan of GIGABYTE, but who knows.

Hmm, the MB I originally posted is still looking pretty good.. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6813128089

    Re: New PC Build Time

If money is an issue, I'd suggest getting the e8400 (or even e3110 if the e8400 is out of stock). It can easily overclock to match the same speed as the e8500 on stock voltages. Should be easy as just changing the fsb to be 1404 in the bios (an increase of 71 from default of 1333).

Most will also overclock near the 4GHz range on air with a decent cooler.

Also do you plan on having the option to go SLi anytime in the future? (Good question to ask when deciding on motherboard)

    Re: New PC Build Time

i went with the q6600 for now (i plan to upgrade in the future when a better 45nm quad comes out... the quad 45nm thats out now isnt super overclockable, and i plan to push my q6600 to 3.0 at least)

as far as motherboards go, i too was partial to gigabyte for a time, and i still use one it what will be my linux box once i get my new pc going, but i chose http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6813188026 for my new box, as none of the affordable gigabytes a good chipset i wanted (nvidia)

    Re: New PC Build Time

Money isnt an issue, however id rather make smart reasonable buys, and im not looking to make the best PC ever either.

I dont like to overclock my PCs, so no need to factor that in, I also dont plan on using SLI/XF.

    Hmmhm

    E8400 does seem like a better price/perfomance @ $199/3.0ghz comparied to E8500s $289/3.16

This GSkill ram is looking pretty good http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6820231166
lolGSkill? but newegg reviews are all good on all of their products.. so I guess they cant be horrible.

    Re: New PC Build Time

If you're not going to overclock, go with the E8400. The main reason people love the q6600 is that its a very overclock-friendly chip. Most users can get 3.6Ghz on a decent air cooler. That's a 66% overclock which prior to the 6600 was pretty unheard of (excluding extreme brand, but those are just guaranteed overclocks anyway) on air cooling. The E8400 will perform better at stock speeds and you should be happy with it.

Gskill is fine. Hardcore enthusiants recommend OCZ or Corsair, but Gskill isnt a terrible company and their ram should be fine for your build. You didn't list which motherboard you're getting, most come with a list of compatible RAM, you may want to check that out prior to purchasing the RAM.

    Re: New PC Build Time

I may consider OCn a bit, but just a small tad.

I posted the MB im looking at in the OP.
And wtf, it's become so hard to find a good case now a days, I bought a 99$ Ultra case with 6 fans, but I cant find anything now for any less than $160. Mainly looking at ATX Full, with as many fans as possible.
Edit: THink I may go with this.. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6811146029

    Re: New PC Build Time

If you're into OCing you can OC the E8500 to 4 on air safely

Looks good! That build should work out well for you. You could probably get away with a lower wattage power supply but that's nitpicking at this point.

Would probably have picked an 8800GT but that's just me.

ATI Card? odd i went with the 8800GT

also do you really need lightscribe? are you going to pay extra for light scribe disks to use that feature? you can get the same drive sans light scribe for liek $15 cheaper

It's more expensive, and it's not as overclockable as the q6600 due to the lower multiplier.
