Newly installed, problem getting FFXI to run.

My brother has recently bought FFXI for himself and his fiancee, after successfully installing the game last night on both his desktop PC and laptop he's getting this error:

This is as he's trying to load FFXI itself, POL seems fine. This comes up on both machines, but his desktop allows him to play regardless, whereas his laptop does not. Both machines run on Vista home premium apparently, I don't know if this is relevant or not.

Here's the laptop info in case it's important:

I've searched the forum for similar topics but nothing has come up :s I hope someone can shed some light.

Looks like it's asking you to point it to where the install .msi is. Also looks like he clicked "run" instead of "save" from the website as it's pointing to his temp folder.

My suggestion, reinstall POL. Uninstall then Download the POL for Vista from the Playonline Site.

You could try just downloading the .msi and pointing that error to it.

He assures me that he definitely clicked Save and not Run, and I'm inclined to believe that. He uninstalled once already last night and reinstalled everything this morning. He also says he's tried looking for the .msi file to download and hasn't been able to find it. Being somewhat computer illiterate I don't actually know what a .msi file is or where he should go to find it.

Ok sorry, I kind of read that quickly... I see now that it is happening when FFXI is trying to lauch... hmm.. the .msi is a Microsoft Installer Package File... it should be on the CD that you're installing FFXI from (Setup.msi). You may have to go into like "Data1" folder or something, been a little while since I did that, but I know in Vista I had to explore to the CD to launch the setup.

Try putting in the FFXI CD then pointing that error to the file... if I wasn't at work I could give you a direct path to it. Sadly it looks like your install of FFXI has some issues... but hopefully you wont have to go through the whole update again, and just pointing that error to the .msi file might be enough to fix your issue.

    Kind of odd.

He's got it to work now, not entirely sure how. I think he said he was trying to run one copy of FFXI on the two PCs at once, whatever he meant by that. Thank you for trying to help!
