What damage type does Retaliation do?

Thought it was the same damage type as your weapon but while fighting clots in Apollyon tonight I had a Retaliation do 0 damage while I was using Axes. I don't think it proc'd right when the mob died (I don't think so but a possibility).

Against the bones on the third floor Retliation did damage.

I'm fairly sure it's based on the DMG rating of the weapon you are using similar to counter, this at least is what i've noticed while i've had it proc.

Would seem logical that if you counter as it dies it does no damage.

Well mobs on that floor are immune to blunt right? So either you killed it before Retaliation could proc (seems unlikely) or you answered your own question.

Counter damage seem to bypass any sort of damage reduction.

At least that's what my experience with Campaign Quadav and JoT seem to indicate.

I believe it is blunt damage since I got similar results to the OP's while in the same Apollyon zone. Probably safe to say it's blunt.

Don't believe so. Was in limbus on the floor immune to blunt damage, and with formless strikes up, my punches would do damage but both my counters and kicks would hit for 0.

Well, that's a straight situational immunity vs. a reduction.

Counter and Retal defiantly have strange properties. When i was skilling Staff on WAR/SAM, i was using an Earth Staff on TW crabs. Regular melee hits were doing 50-70ish (low skill at the time) but Seigan Counters were hitting for like, 180-200ish as if i were swinging with a fully skill capped weapon.

I get Seigan Counter's and Retaliates that line up exactly with my critical hit damage, so I just assumed they were crit procs.

I noticed it cause I smacked a mob I was farming for a 303 crit, and a 303 retaliate back to back and thought "wow, that's surprisingly cool."

Also noticed a REALLY weird tendency that when I crit and retaliate around the same time, it seems like the Ret crits more often, but I can't say anything for sure... just an eyeballed thing.

For monk, counters are blunt damage regardless of weapon type used. They probably just copypasted the code for retaliate

Counters can crit, but it doesn't say "critical", just the damage is higher. They also proc spikes, but it doesn't show in the log. Always fun to get paralyzed by ice spikes while casting utsusemi due to counter.

Seigan counters are without a doubt blunt regardless of weapon used. I had always assumed all counters worked that way.
