Taken; Liam Neeson and written by Luc Besson.

It was straight to DVD I think and it's gotten pretty good reviews, very good action/drama flick.

I was really let down by Sunshine. Felt like it
    Spoiler: show
devolved from an interesting psychological study of the potential effects of long-term space travel to a slasher flick.

As always, the visuals were stunning and of course the score. Very promising film, but it just collapsed after Kaneda died.

I'd like to see a film like this but really focus on that psychological study. There have been a lot of movies that TRY to do it but end up switching genres in the second half (Sphere, Event Horizen, etc.). Not all deal w/ space travel but I like the idea of a team of people being affected by their surroundings.

Oh dood. Sunshine fucking sucked. It was absolutely ridiculous. You could tell it was directed by the guy who did 28 Days Later. It started out awesome and then at about the midway point the movie became an unsalvageable mess, just like the mid/end of 28 Days Later. Avoid this stinking pile of poo.

But Equilibrium is a fantastic movie. The Prestige I enjoyed but the ending was a bit blah imo.

How can you like Equilibrium and hate Sunshine?

They both fail equally! Equilibrium's saving grace is the fight sequences. I mean, that's really it - watching a bunch of people get their faces punched in.

28 Days Later was good. 28 WEEKS Later however would be a better fit for those criticisms you listed IMO(although, it did explore some new themes so it wasn't entirely redundant)

The Savages, and not just because I have a crush on Laura Linney.

Just saw Smoking Aces on HBO, not a bad clusterfuck of a movie. Also I NEED to reiterate The Departed...if you have not seen this movie, question your existence. It's that good.

Pulse is a good Jp horror flick. That's kairo the original japanese version not the redone crappy american crap...

Also the obvious, Dark Knight >.>

If you like The Departed, watch Heat. Similar films but also great in different ways;although, Heat is more nuanced (IMO).

    Have a couple:

    • In Bruges, great hitman movie, you should see it. Dark comedy.
    • Rec, horror and there was a thread about it. Really scary stuff.
    • Chocolate, thai martial arts movie. Think Ong Bak with a chick.
    • Rogue, a croc movie. It's okay, don't expect some freak/radioactive animal, just a really pissed off croc.
    • All the boys Love Mandy Lane, decent slasher flick with an ok twist.

I loved Sunshine, AND Boondock Saints, nice selection.

Last movie I saw in the theatre was Wanted, I really enjoyed it.
Last movies I saw on DVD were Adele H., The Bride Wore Black, and Chunking Express... Love em all!
I'd recommend them to people who like slow-moving, strange films. The Bride Wore Black was really influential in the Kill Bill story from what I can see, if that makes it more appealing.

It wasn't the last movie I saw but if you can get your hands on Festen (The Celebration), do it. Wouldn't hurt to read the Dogme 95 Manifesto. Just don't look up a synopsis before you watch it, you'll ruin it

p.s. I'll add that I loved Sunshine because it gave me the creeps the entire time. Hearing the little blipping noise freaks me out now. I appreciate a movie that can have that kind of effect on me. Too many movies I see these days leave me with nothing.

Another Edit: The Dogme 95 Manifesto leads into the Vow of Chastity which is a really interesting read since it shows what the filmmaker and actors cannot do, including using artificial lighting and no props allowed. Pretty sure most if not all the dialogue was improved.

Spent last weekend watching a couple of my favorite older comedies so:

Trading Places - Dan Aykroyd, Eddie Murphy, Jamie Lee Curtis, Don Ameche, etc.
It's one of the few comedies I never get tired of watching.
    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0086465/

Clue - Tim Curry, Madeline Kahn, Christopher Lloyd, Michael McKean, Martin Mull, etc.
Yep - based on the board game. It's a hilarious movie that keeps you guessing until the end on your first watch.
    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0088930/

Blazing Saddles - Mel Brooks, Madeline Kahn, Gene Wilder, Slim Pickens, Harvey Korman, etc.
One of my all-time favorites. I actually did a 20 page paper on this for school at one point, along with a paper on Mel Brooks.
    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0071230/

Young Frankenstein - Gene Wilder, Peter Boyle, Marty Feldman, Cloris Leachman, Madeline Kahn, Gene Hackman, etc.
Another Mel Brooks film, just as hilarious as Blazing Saddles with an old school black & white feel.

Flyboys, if you like that historic war era heroism type of thing.

American Drug War, if you like political conspiracy documentary type of things.

The Kingdom, if you like predictable suspense of FBI agents in Saudi Arabia.

Snoop Dog's Hood of Horrors, if you like ghetto fabulous horror flix.

My bad I thought movie was pluralized.
