    Mother (2009)

Fans of The Man from Nowhere will recognize Bin Won (or you might not heh). Great 'thriller', very well done I thought. Maybe not super suspenseful, and not really something you are scratching your head to figure out, but I really appreciated the acting by Bin Won and his 'mother' played by Hye-ja Kim. She was amazing. Been on Netflix for ages now, finally got around to seeing it.

Just rewatched The Fifth Element. Should be a damn crime for anyone who hasn't seen it.

Weird question.. but is the mother at all bad ass or really intelligent? IMDB isn't giving me much. I wouldn't want to watch my mom look for a guy who framed me <_< lol

Haha Thunder. No, she isn't a former mixed martial artist, or a retired forensic specialist, or Liam Neeson from Taken. The town is a smaller town though, Police are over it. Not much incentive for the lawyers to really dig in. She is all he's got and vice versa. I just found the acting to be well done and story itself to be great also. I originally only added it to see what else Bin Won had done and this is a drastic change in roles for him but just as great in other ways as he was in Man from Nowhere.

Dogtooth wasn't really that bad it was a neat way for it to convey it's nightmarish story. But then again i was high as balls when i watched it with andalusian so i may have enjoyed it more than i would have otherwise.

Miike does it again. Two amazing films back to back. Not sure I like this one as much as 13 Assassins. They are actually quite different. But I will own it, and it will sit proudly next to my 13 Assassins Blu-Ray
Even though the IMDB user review of this was garbage I'm going to give it a shot tonight based on your review.

This is going to sound ridiculous.. but a friend and I sat and watched a random movie on TV once called "Trollhunter." Its basically a Norwegian mockumentary movie (filmed somewhat like Cloverfield; hand held camera, lots of movement etc) about a group of college kids looking to expose a man believed to be illegally hunting bears. They find the guy.. turns out he's a.. surprise, Troll hunter. It escalates pretty quickly from there, and as stupid as the movie sounded at first we sat there and watched the whole thing. It was honestly very entertaining if you're into that kind of flick. Recommend looking it up OnDemand or Netflix if its listed, might be kind of obscure. Worth it though. Whole thing is subtitled.

Holy fuck, lol. I didn't realize it was Won Bin when I first watched it.

Interested in what both of you thought. I didn't see the garbage review, oh actually maybe I did? The 3 star review? I will admit I have never seen the original, so perhaps that is why I liked this one so much. I watched it without comparing it to another version, and found it minimal, slow (in a very good way, don't expect a ton of action) and very very beautifully shot. I would think it would all come down to what you expect going in.

I didn't know there was an original. I'd actually seen it twice. The first time was several months before The Man From Nowhere and the second time was after when my family was visiting and chose it. I knew Do-joon looked familiar but I couldn't quite place where. Such a difference lol.

Anyway, I remember thinking the movie was charming and humble in a way. It was paced really well imo, and I agree, it really was beautifully shot. I didn't feel like it was theater-worthy material, but it's definitely great Netflix/rental material...something you sit down and watch with your significant other or something. I enjoyed its story and sense of aesthetics. Not sure I'd pick it out again for a long while, but it's solid.

    Spoiler: show
i mean yeah cool the mom tried to feed the son pesticide but they didnt really go anywhere with that. unless that was the reason the son is made up of 50% spaghetti 50% potato, then that's cool

    few films:
watched jacob's ladder after that brief stint in the random image thread/silent hill. loved it, both theatrical cut and deleted scenes interpretations.
    Spoiler: show
disliked the "IT WAS THE GOVERNMENT'S SECRET MAAN" thing but it was made like 20 years ago so it was acceptable

high fidelity was cool but fuck jack black, also could not get over how ridiculously childish Rob was for a 30-year-old, but maybe i should read the book first before making that judgement
    trainspotting was great
merry christmas mr lawrence was like a 80's alt-girl fanfic between ryuichi sakamoto and david bowie

someone help me pick my next film thinkin' mikogami trilogy or tenchu or if you could rec a film along these lines that'd be cool

it's pretty good, wish the remake was as good as what the US remake of girl with the dragon tattoo ended up being.

Skip Seven Samurai and watch The Magnificent Seven instead. IMO it's better paced.

Saw Captain Blood and The Spanish Main on TCM recently, so pirate movies from the 40s-50s. I don't want to sound like a young shithead by saying surprisingly good but yeah, they were.
