i had to play a hand-me-down sax also, my cousin played it for 10 years, then gave it to me when i was 10, and I put another 9 years on it. It's a really beaten up instrument with dents all of it and it's scratched up, but it plays wonderfully if you have a good omniture.
The only reason why I can see they appraised it at 40 and 60 was because of possibly it's brand. Since different brands make different quality instruments, but I'm not familiar with who makes good instruments anymore. It looks beautiful, though my favorite ones were the ones with like, black laquer coating, those looked so cool.
