    windows vista 64 bit

My g/f just got her laptop with Windows Vista Home Premium 64 bit edition. Will she still be able to install regular versions of applications (like office)? Or is she going to need to look for everything in 64-bit now?

64 bit has a 32 emulator i guess you could say, you can run 32 bit programs on it fine, hell i just installed it myself.

    Heres a little example.
Any 32 bit programs will say *32 by them.

Oh.... well that's confusing, my gf won't be able to do that. So microsoft office won't work unless I get a 64 bit version?

Should run ok, i did find this on microsofts webpage if that helps.
The 2007 Microsoft Office system programs client is a 32-bit application and can run on a Windows 64-bit platform (Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, and Windows Vista) but there may be some feature limitations

the only thing you really have to worry about with 64bit vista (or xp) is drivers, software should work just fine, drivers though you need the 64bit version

I haven't noticed any limitations with Office. I've been able to use any software I've wanted to, just sometimes you'll need a different version or drivers, but most companies have them easily accessible.

I believe Office 2007 only has a 32-bit software available for consumers.

Even though it is a 32-bit application, when you install it on Vista 64-bit and run it, it will automatically be run through a 32-bit app emulator. You don't need to do anything for it to do that. Almost all 32-bit apps run without problems on Vista. Of all the programs I have installed, I have yet to run into any features being limited just because it is being run through an emulator.

The only thing you have to be concerned with is drivers. You will need to download 64-bit specific drivers for Vista.

However, if in the future you see an application being offered in 64-bit, you should try to get the 64-bit version instead for better performance. Unless if there are add-ons/plug-ins not available for the 64-bit app. For example: 64-bit web browsers. There is no 64-bit version of adobe flash player which makes using a 64-bit web browser not very useful.
