A man is about to be executed today with poor evidence.

Apparently, and bear with me as i'm still looking for solid info. Troy Davis was charged with the killing of cops; he was sentenced to death but now 7 of the 9 witnesses have backed own and there is no DNA evidence that he did this. He is going to be executed today at 7pm.

Jimmy Carter Urges Georgia to Stay Execution of Troy Davis

Former President Jimmy Carter has called on the Georgia State Board of Pardons and Paroles to reverse its decision to deny clemency to Troy Davis who is scheduled to be executed on Tuesday. Since Davis was convicted of allegedly killing a police officer in 1991, seven of the nine non-police witnesses have recanted. No physical or DNA evidence ties Davis to the crime. Jimmy Carter said, "This case illustrates the deep flaws in the application of the death penalty in this country. Executing Troy Davis without a real examination of potentially exonerating evidence risks taking the life of an innocent man and would be a grave miscarriage of justice.” In Atlanta, Georgians for Alternatives to the Death Penalty and the NAACP are planning to hold a rally today in front of the State Capitol.
Georgia is planning to execute Davis on Tuesday, even though the US Supreme Court is scheduled to decide next week on whether to hear a last-minute appeal in his case.

pretty fucked up to execute someone with no hard evidence against them. Don't think that's legal in most states with the death penalty.
I won't pretend I know a lot about this case like so many are claiming (this shit is all over my school and people are being retarded about it TEXT 34985094 TO 8493 TO SAVE HIS LIFE!1!!!!!!!!!!!) but from the outside looking in this looks really bad/shady.

so, his execution is today, and the supreme court thought the best time for a meeting about his appeal would be a week after he's dead?

I have already sent out a call. I would urge people to do whatever is necessary to try and delay this as many of you can clearly see, there is hardly any evidence to justify an execution.

    Exactly; the situation is ridiculous.

Most of the time, the news that the supreme court is willing to get involved is enough for the state to delay it again. Maybe Georgia's trying to send a message about not wanting to be bossed around by a bunch of old guys in Washington!

Also, try to remember that this case has lasted 19 years. If nobody could find "that one last witness" so far, it's probably not going to happen in the next 5 hours.

on top of the witnesses recanting, several made statements that they were pressured into their initial testimony by police who threatened to name them as accomplices.

this is fucked up, and of course it's a black man in the south. Carter, the Pope, and I think another prominent Bishop (Tutu?) have all requested clemency.

This is why I hate states.

This is the part that blows my mind about these kind of stories. You only had X years of them on death row to actually make your case on the matter, why does all this shit turn out mere hours before sentencing is to be carried out?

Well, i've known about it since last week (independent media, yo), but i had thought the decision would have been turned by now. Their insistence is troubling.

Well according to this, all this stuff has been "coming out" ever since then (Desmond Tutu didn't get involved just recently after all), this is just the first time we've heard of it. So either it's just hitting the national media this time around, or we weren't paying attention last summer when the first execution was delayed.

I'd also like to point out that this sort of situation isn't exactly as rare as we might think. It's just pretty rare for it to get national attention.
