    Question about upgrading my Computer

The thing is my computer is pretty old. I currently have a AMD Athlon(TM) XP2400+ 2.01 GHz with 768 MB ram and a Radeon 9600 pro video card. What I'm wondering is if it would be worth it (or even possible) to upgrade to 2 gb ram, and something like a 8800 GTS 512 MB card or a similar card. Is my processor too out of date to even consider that. I don't have a lot of money to throw around right now or I would just buy a new comp. I'm really just looking to be able to get more FPS for playing WoW, and say TF2, so nothing to demanding graphics wise. I have about 300$ or so to spend. Any other possible suggestions for upgrading that could help in that price range would be helpful too.

    Thanks

Your CPU is fine for the games you'll be playing. 2GB of RAM shouldn't be too expensive and won't hurt, but there is something to note: if your motherboard supports dual channel, make sure you buy two 1GB sticks instead of a single 2GB stick.

Save that $300, come back when you have $500+ and build a new machine. Yours is so old that imo it's not worth tossing any cash at.

There are integrated chips out there that would be an upgrade from your video card. In that respect, you could buy a new CPU/mobo/RAM/PSU (by necessity) for under $300 that would be an improvement. That being said, I would try to get a little more money together so you can build something nicer.

Just upgrading the RAM/video card would likely show some improvement, but you'd be stuck with parts that you couldn't use in a newer system (I don't think they even make the 8800 in AGP form anyway).

except if you actually game, i'd go ahead and put together more like 750-1000

that machine is 5-7 years old and is way due for a replacement with well chosen components.

the mobo won't work with current processors
the ram won't work with current mobo's
the video cards today need pci-e 16x 2.0 to really reach maximum benefit
the hard disks have come a long way since then

basically about the only thing you'll be capable of keeping is the case and the power supply and whatever cd/dvd drives you have.

With careful selection and bargain hunting, and overclocking, you can put together something pretty decent for $500, but of course more is better. I just meant $500 should be the bare minimum to build a box suitable for 2-3 years.
