I love the smell of stop bath. Oh how I miss thee. I need to get around to building my dream personal darkroom. Really wouldn't cost a lot, enlarger and chemicals would be the big hits.
Enlarger isn't really even that bad nowadays, I was looking at ones a few years back for around 150 that would do everything you'd need in a personal darkroom. I want to set one up, but now I'm torn between Darkroom, my own DSLR, or putting more money into my car. Choices... choices...
Thread needs a bump.

OMG, how did I miss this thread?
I have a Nikon D90 I got for Christmas, and am kinda learning as I go along. I used to have a Canon S5. I loooooove portraits, food photography and macros. I only have one lens, a 50mm f/1.8, amd I'm often sadfacing that I can't afford any others at the moment.

The following photos I took like... seven years ago, with a film camera. Developed them myself. I have no clue the make and model of the camera; it was for a class in high school, and they loaned them to us.

jesus. d90s are so nice.
What setting do you guys prefer? Coming from only working with film, I tend to shoot everything on complete manual control... but I think that's more a habitual need to control everything and not trust the camera to know better.
Do you guys shoot full manual, aperture priority, shutter priority? Full auto? =/
(Yea, shit is situational... but what are your preferences)
Full manual.
M is for men.
A is for auto (women, babies, pussies, etc)
I shoot primarily in either M or P and sometimes S. I love the fact that I can control everything that I need to, and typically only use P if it's low light and I don't have my sb800 with me and I need a bit of flash help.
@Lexa: The 50mm f/1.8 is an amazing lens. It can control so many shots and I use mine quite a bit. The only suggestion I'd make as far as a second lens would be the 18-200 VRII walkabout anything lens. It's so fun to be able to have that much range. And from what they say, having the VR allows for an extra stop down, I'm not too sure I believe that but it's much more affordable than the 17-55 f/2.8 which pretty much stays on my camera 24/7
I was drooling over an 18-200, but I doubt I can afford it anytime soon. The 18-135mm seems to be quite a bit cheaper, so if it comes to it, I might get that - though honestly, next time I am to fork out a larger sum of money (college student, GO!), I might want to get it right the first time.
I've seen very hit and miss with the 18-135, in my opinion (granted it's just my opinion) I think you'd be much better served waiting and just getting the 18-200. The fact that it has the VRII on it does make a difference.
18-135 vs 18-200 VR - The results may surprise you! - Photo.net Nikon Forum
has a great comparison, and apparently the guy there found the 135 to be better on the larger prints. Something to think about.
I do a lot of auto just because I don't have the knowledge on what to really tweek to get different results. Sometimes I'll swap to manual focus but that's as close as I've gotten so far.
I'd say start with S priority, it's alot easier to get what you want with that one. After I dealt with that for awhile, I then went to M / P.
You'll find that by changing the F-Stop as opposed to just using the popup flash you can get a much prettier picture.
The 18-200 is overpriced for what it does unless you are the type that hates changing lenses. It's slow, bulky, soft around the edges and pricey. I'd think about it for $350-400. $600 used is way too much.
VR and VRII do make a big difference (1/20th vs 1/8th handheld) but it's not a replacement for a tripod and doesn't help in action shots.
I've said this before I think, but I'll say it again, the most fun and best shots I've gotten have come from using my MF primes. They are cheap, feel bulletproof (all metal), and are better optically then most zooms.
Nikon is releasing a AF-S 35mm in March, I'm looking forward to that :D
