Personally, unless the 7D comes down closer to $1k for the body, I don't see myself grabbing it. For me, right now, it makes more sense to get MORE for my money. When I say more I mean items, not necessarily MPs or upgrades, etc. I know that I would rather have a 7D than a 40/50D, hell... gimme a 5DMkII. That just isn't quite feasible just now though.

So, the 40/50D may be old sure but they are very reliable cameras and if had more money for better glass then that extends how much i can do with it. On the flip side I would have to justify having JUST a 50mm 1.8 (shoddy build, etc. etc.) and the Kit lens that came with the wife's 400D if i got the 7D. That make sense?

I am not shooting fast subjects either, or burst. Take a look at what I shoot currently. I imagine that a 50D would be a nice upgrade here... ?

My Flickr --> http://www.flickr.com/photos/effny/ (and of course, feedback is always welcome)
You said you don't shoot fast subjects, so I click your flickr, and the first picture is of your daughter flipping her hair as fast as possible .

Aha! yeah... i thought of that after I posted the link >.> That was just me messing around with my old Konica though, NORMALLY it is just semi-candid / semi-created portraits I suppose.

I'd love to pick up a D7000 since I enjoy shooting video also. I'd be more enthusiastic about making videos if I could use all my Nikon lenses and have things turn out way more professional looking. Can't really get good DOF with the Cannon HD consumer video camera I have now. I'd sell my D80 and a a lens or two to pick up the D7000.

    P.S. Nikon shooter here, too. Have a D80 and a D700.

    Edit:

Just to be a jerk and show off some of the stuff I own for my private studio:

Not pictured: The camera & tripod since I'm using them, D80, all the lenses I have, tons of muslins, miscellaneous other gear.

That is a nice setup you have there. I am putting off building my studio in my house for now since my friend built one in his house so I just go down the street if I need a studio. More focusing on the mobile side of things right now. Though a setup like that would be so convenient and nice. Fhq you do photography professionally as a primary income source or just as a pro-hobby with a little bit of income? What is your website I would like to see some of your work.

Nope just a hobby. I'd love to get paid for it. I've been working the rounds at different places trying to get people familiar with what I can do.

    Site: http://www.adamlphotography.com

Work in progress, mostly a lot of local MMA events. Need more people to pose for me, and I need to get out and about to shoot other types of photos.

Yeah finding people to model for you is very difficult. Thanks for sharing your website.

I just turned my garage into my own little studio, wish the ceiling was a bit higher but since 95% of my portrait work is for children it will work out really well.

I can definitely recommend Alienbees for the price and their customer service is excellent in my opinion. I own 2 AB800, a Vagabond II, beauty dish and softbox from them and everything has performed excellent so far, and prices are reasonable.

What I really like is there various trade in programs if you decide you need to upgrade.

I'm second shooting a wedding tomorrow for a local studio, failure incoming . Doing as prep work for a wedding I'm shooting solo for a friend (budget wedding, didn't want to pay a pro, doing it free). For never advertising or even having a business, I've had a ton of requests to do various shoots (2 weddings and too many kids). Everyone asks for prices. I'm all like...uh...this is just a hobby, I'm still pretty damn raw :/

In January, I'm quitting my job to finish clinicals, and my wifes income will be all we get. Maybe this would be a good side gig, although I'd like to do more second shooting to get a bit more experience/confidence. I really have absolutely no interest in weddings though. Ive done one bride solo shoot, and it's already a pain in the ass.

I second shot a wedding and am second shooter for two more this year but after that I am done with weddings. I did them to help out a few people in my local photography club but they are long, tedious and I just don't feel comfortable doing them.

It is definitely nice as a side gig to get some extra cash, I do portraits either in my little studio or on location and make a decent amount for what it is. If you are getting portrait requests I would do them, your work that has been posted is nice.

Some pictures I took at the Aquarium last weekend. These are straight out of the camera because I don't have photoshop installed on my new laptop yet and my desktop is out of commission until the end of the semester since it is a linux box right now.

Has anyone done "light drawing" before? How do you do it and do you have any tips on improving the picture quality?

Long exposure + light source. The light source can be anything, a small LED that is drawn across the frame, or a hand held torch that paints the side of a building or tree. Set your exposure to be long enough to give you time to draw with the light - this could be anything from 10-30 seconds. Then begin to create the streaks of light using the light source until you've created your drawing. The theory being that if you expose correctly for the scene, anywhere you paint with the light will be over exposed and thus create the streaking that you're looking for.

My tips would be to shoot using a low ISO (thus increasing exposure time as well as reducing any noise in the image) and use a light source you can switch off, otherwise you'll have streaks where you wouldn't necessarily want them - meaning you'll have to retouch the photograph later. Other than that, have fun!

I saved this link a while ago because I planned on making some of these, but worth checking out for the DIY inclined - Photo Light Pens

And here is a decent 'How To' for ya - Light Drawing

Oh and this... is pretty damn amazing.

There was recently a fire right around the corner from my place around 4am and since the sirens already woke me up I figured I'd run downstairs and snap a few shots while I was up.

Just finished reading the whole thread, yep, I was bored. Photography is something I've always been interested in, and I'm selling one of my Les Pauls (~$1500), would a T2i be an alright choice for jumping straight in? The 'best' camera I've ever used was a PowerShot S60, I was recommended this kit and this lens by Jedimasta but just looking for second opinions. Videography is something I'm interested in also, I've seen impressive footage on Vimeo and YouTube shot by the T2i, and tons of amazing stills from Jedimasta and Tyche in this thread (I'm sure there are others but those are the first that came to mind). Selling the LP over this weekend and I'll have some spare money to be able to potentially take the plunge on a DSLR, I'd like to save some of the money from it but if there's some things I need I don't mind spending more. With an SD card, the camera kit, and the lens from eBay it came out to $1,211 with 3 year coverage on mechanical failure and accidental handling (which I assume is a good idea). Would be using it for pretty much everything, I'd take it with me everywhere I go since you never know when something worth taking a picture of will show up, I'd say probably candid portraits/portraits/shots of the city/scenery/sunsets/storms the most (did I just name everything there is to photograph?). Anyways, I plan on learning from you guys, Jedimasta and the books Tyche has mentioned/recommended.

the T2i is a great camera but it isn't the only choice. Go out and play with various different cameras in your price range in a store before you decide on anything otherwise you might be stuck with a camera that you do not like.

Neglected to mention that I have tried out quite a few at Best Buy/Wolf Camera and Jedimasta's recommendation combined with my budget made the T2i a perfect fit, was very comfortable with it. I was mainly looking for thoughts on lenses to get started with, or recommendations, as I said I was recommended that kit plus the extra lens from eBay.

If you are a beginner stick with the kit lens (usually 18-55mm) you will be fine with that to learn, then grab a 55-200mm zoom or a 70-300mm zoom and a 50mm f1.4 or f1.8 next. That I think will be a good path for learning.

So for my photography class, our next project is a bokeh project I'm having trouble coming up with ideas of what I could do that stands out.

I wanna find a fire being put out, kinda like the pics earlier on this page, and get the truck lights and shit as bokeh in the background...but that seems hard to find around here.
