It's probably not smart of Cryptic to only have three weeks of open beta. This game needs more time.

This game needs another year, at least.
Didn't someone say in this thread that the financial backers are pushing the game to come out and Cryptic is just "Eh, we'll fix it on live".?
I beta'd another game for Cryptic in 2007, something based on Roman history. It played almost exactly the same as this game, except with gladiators and centurions instead of starships. It never got launched because Cryptic took over Star Trek Online. I believe it was cancelled in Sept-Oct 2007, so Cryptic has only been working on this game for 2-2.5 years. It doesn't seem very long considering other games that have been announced and not launched yet. They probably want to bank on the popularity of the recent movie.
I finally got online tonight. I'm starting to get the hang of the spaceship combat. I've started off about 6 characters now and never got very far with any. I had a Saurian and found out you can't level Saurian skills due to some bug (don't start a Saurian!). I'm going to try to stick with this latest Vulcan character I have because my husband is closing in on his next ship and I'm way behind.
Tbh, I find it a really fun game. Maybe its because I like Star Trek (or maybe because its a free beta) but I enjoy it a lot. I wont buy it or anything, cause I wouldnt pay to play w/o some friends to go through it with, but if it was GW style and buy to play, I'd get it and play on and off. I know there are still some things that need polishing and all but it aint killing the fun. /shrug I could be easy to please too. Ah well
I've been enjoying the beta for the bit I've played. Space combat is a lot of fun, and away missions are enjoyable once you get used to the controls. I'll probably make a pre-order.
I think the triangle is a marker you can place. I think I made it pop by clicking on the minimap, but I could be wrong.
I read in the chat it was a lag bug. My first time in earthdock I was a ship for about 20-25 seconds.
I thought the thing in the launcher said only human and klingon where the only races available in beta?
It's a pretty fun game, still on the fence about it. It does need a bit of work as others have said.
Got promoted to Lieutenant Commander yesterday and have been enjoying flying my Cruiser. Outside of FFXI I'm pretty sure I'll be spending quite a bit of time in STO
It's Federation and Klingon. Saurians are part of the Federation, as are Humans, Betazoids, Trills, and a bunch of others. The character I've currently settled on is a Vulcan.
I've not figured out how to start a Klingon character yet. I only get the option for Federation.
You need to get to 6th grade Lieutenant before you're allowed to make a Klingon character. It's on the site.
That explains it. I've not gotten past level 3 lieutenant yet. I keep making new characters. My husband just got access to the Klingons tonight though.
I just did my first public group instance, which was not easy on my four year old HP laptop. Massive graphics lag. Major overrsteering issues. If I can get a computer with a better graphics card and processor I bet this game is awesome.
Luckily for me the only lag I've experienced is network lag, but that's most likely because they're stress testing the heck out of the servers.
I'm going to pre-order, but the head-start will be fairly useless for me since I plan to roll a Joined Trill. It's a bonus race with the Digital Deluxe Editions, but isn't available in the character creator until you can input your retail key which won't be available until Feb 2. The game seems very casual-friendly so far, so I'm looking forward to playing this at my leisure along side FFXI.
Well, by servers I mean the sector/system/instance servers. It may be a single pool that all the subscribers log in to (for the moment), but there is certainly more than one machine running STO. It's a safe assumption that every time you hit a loading screen your character is moving to a different server.
Bit the bullet and made my pre-order. I'll be rolling as a Joined Trill tactical officer with escort ship. Undecided on my specialization inside tactical, but leaning towards either soldier or special ops. Anyone else planning on playing come release?
My husband is pretty much addicted so I think we'll both be there (one at a time til we can get two computers working that can run the game). We really like the open instance episode stuff. The space battles are really cool, once you have the hang of the ship controls. I got sucked into a wandering Kilngon instance when I was trying to figure out where I was yesterday. That was a lot of fun.
I think I'm going to buy it too, but just regular retail. It'll be something fun to play until I pick up a more serious MMO like T.E.R.A. or FFXIV later this year. Any word on when/if players can roll as Cardiasian?
Fuck Klingon Warbirds, all I gotta say
Will def. be playing this till FF14 or Star Wars Old Republic comes out
