I think I may buy this, but one thing that has really been bugging me is that it feels like the enemies are overly simple. It reminds me of when you start out in FFXI, you can fight Tiny Mandys, Bees, etc. The mobs not only look different, but have different tp abilities and your experience fighting them is much more different than in STO. In STO, all you get is multiple ships shooting phasers and torpedoes. There has only been one variation I've seen, where one ship is helped by a bunch of smaller ships that spray something on you that basically amounts to Stun. On ground missions, things change up a bit more, but neither you nor the enemies do much more than shoot. On the single player instances where you have your whole away team, nothing seems difficult because if you and your team die, you just respawn and hope that every time you try again you kill one more mob, and your respawn is never very far away. These things aren't that bad, but they make for a rather simple MMO; so much that it feels like a typical XBOX or PS3 game that you don't have to play with your friends, but can if you want to.

I was looking at the different preorder deals and looks like you get head start and beta access plus:

Atari online: 500 Cryptic Points to buy ingame items like uniforms, slots and stuff. $10 more for the digital deluxe edition adds 3 uniforms from the original TV series, the Joined Trill race which gives a bonus to 5 skills, a KHAAAAN emote, a Klingon wine toast emote, an "NX" prefix on your ship designation (rarely used or something), and a ship item that adds an attack skill with a 360 degree arc and short range.

Amazon: $10 off a future video game purchase and a Borg bridge officer.

Best Buy: A pet, Klingons get a Targ (boar looking thing) and Feds get a Tribble.

Gamestop: Constitution class ship (old school Enterprise) w/ blue phasers and an extra engineering slot.

Direct2Drive: Ground combat shield that regenerates over time.

    Gametap: Same as Atari.

Walmart: $10 eGiftcard and 500 skill points.

The digital deluxe editions looks nice, but I'd hate to be locked into one race for that bonus. Borg BO is interesting, I think I read something about they regenerate shield/hp over time. Pets are meh. Haven't done D2D before, dunno if the shield is worth it. The 500 skill points look nice for the beginning maybe but prolly not much value later on. In all, hard to pass up the win of having the original Enterprise with blue pewpews.

All DDE pre-orders get the following bonuses regardless of retailer:

TOS Uniform Set: Three Uniforms from the original series (blue, red, yellow) | Joined Trill | “KHAAAN!” Emote | Klingon Blood Wine Toast Emote | Unique Registry Prefix | Unique Ship Item: Automated Defense Battery | Head Start Access | Open Beta Access

Each retailer then has an exclusive pre-order item such as:

    Atari: 500 Cryptic Points
    Steam: Chromodynamis Armor
    Direct2Drive: Multi-Spacial Personal Shield
    Gamestop: Constituton class light cruiser

Then you have the Collector's Edition pre-orders that actually ship a game disc and accessories, which have their own set of pre-order bonuses:

Head Start Access | Open Beta Access | Deluxe Packaging | Communicator Badge | Deluxe Manual | Guest Passes | Red Matter Capacitor | TNG Uniform | DS9 Uniform

Each retailer again has their own exclusive pre-order bonus such as:

    Amazon: Liberated Borg Bridge Officer
    Gamestop: Constituton class light cruiser
Best Buy: Pet tribble or targ
    Target: TR-116 Ground Rifle

As you can see, plenty of options. You can also double up pre-orders if you're feeling spendy and get say all the collector's edition pre-order bonuses and exclusive from Amazon and all the DDE bonuses and exclusive from Steam (which is what I did).

    Thats because they are dumb...

It was one thing when games like Warhammer and Aion had them and the difference between ordering from Gamestop or Amazon was the color of the graphic of the glowy effect it put on you, or the element of the resist you got that was completely worthless after level 5 anyway. Yet now these things are getting worse.

As for STO there is only one way I will play the game. I am just not a fan of the microtransaction model of doing things. Buying vanity pets is one thing, but having to buy other things for real money is just going too far for a subscription based game.

Dont forget if you shell out for a life time sub, they let you make a Borg character ;P

I have an EB Games pre-order with the ship with the extra engineering slot and blue lasers. Stuff like that doesn't really interest me, as long as it's not game-breaking. The Trill thing looks like it could be a big advantage for people, and that could annoy me.

I would definitely not go for a lifetime subscription for THIS game. For FF14 perhaps. I did, after all, play FF11 for 5 years at $14/mth for 3 of them and $28/mth for 2 (plus whatever my husband and his two characters cost). That would be worth it, but this game looks very casual. How much is the lifetime anyway?

The space battles are kind of simplistic now, but I think there will be a lot of involved positioning and formation fighting for endgame eventually that might be interesting. If they do it right it will require a lot of teamwork and planning and I like that sort of thing.

Lifetime sub I think is 200 something? 150 something, cant really remember.

    Edit: Looked it up:

    * Lifetime Access to Star Trek Online
    * Playable Borg
    * 2 Additional Character Slots

for the low low price offfff......239.99...fucking lol

or you can pay yearly for only 119.99 and get the 2 additional slots.

companies only allow lifetime sub's when they know their game is gonna suck (lol), why else would they willingly lose money in the long term over a game

Level cap removed as of last night's maintenance! Too bad I'm still only Lieutenant 8. Not that it really matters since everything gets wiped come Tuesday. I just want to play with an escort before then.

Finally got some time to dick around more and got to 4 last night. I thought Science officers were 'healers' but I only have a resuscitation skill that I have never been able to use.

Feels almost pointless to have healer officers when, if your team is disabled, you can respawn like 20 feet away and have at it again without any consequence in just about every battle I've been in so far. As long as you can reliably kill at least one mob per life, you can just keep respawning. Space battles can be retardedly more difficult because you so rarely have npcs to help you out. A lot of the fights where I was by myself I'd have to go in, start attacking one mob and keep him in distance and then fly away, keeping anybody else 10km+ away to keep them from being able to attack me.

Should've tried Ice Mining Fleet Action before they (I think) nerfed the spawn rates. There are tons of enemies everywhere and after you kill a group off you gotta make sure everyone keeps moving forward or enemies respawn on top of you. Somehow we all organized enough to where we would keep moving forward. It was much better to resuscitate fallen members than let them respawn since they would respawn far away and have a bunch of respawned enemies in the way. Seemed to take atleast 1.5hrs to do this and it was actually quite fun for me.

You have to be careful attempting to kill one enemy/respawn while in space battles. I've been in a couple that have glitched the respawn point to some weird spot that left you without access to return to the enemy ships.

If there is no microtransactions, then what are the "Cryptic Points" that you get with the Atari website's preorder deal?

It may not be about actual content like DDO or other F2P games, but even if the microtransactions are all cosmetic its annoying to see more games doing this.

The only MTs that I appreciate are the server transfer/race-name change that Blizzard provides.

Ah, I've never done the Ice Mining Fleet action. After seeing all those notices about fleet actions being bugged I've been avoiding them. I've never had a problem with mobs respawning in between my respawn point and where the current enemy group is, but I was just on and I'm pretty sure I was supposed to have an away team and they didn't transport (there was also no "Request reinforcements" button available), so I had to do the kill one at a time thing. Was in the Kassae facility where you rescue the scientists from the Gorn. The ships outside were incredibly weak, but I beam down and get raped by like 10 Gorn.

I did a couple of the Stop Gorn Invasion fleet actions last night, no issues.

Did anyone else get a little sniffly wandering around DS9?

Yesterday's patch has totally decimated the difficulty level. I used to have problems with my ship's shields staying up and having to turn to a new facing shield. Now I can keep one shield facing and not worry. Hopefully it'll be fixed very soon.
