Two Nuclear Submarines Collide in Atlantic Ocean

The crash between HMS Vanguard and French submarine Le Triomphant, which was also carrying nuclear warheads, is believed to have occurred on February 3 or 4.

Despite being equipped with sonar to detect other vessels, neither submarine apparently realised the other was in the same part of the ocean.

A senior Navy source told a newspaper the potential consequences of such a collision were "unthinkable".

He said: "It's very unlikely there would have been a nuclear explosion. But a radioactive leak was a possibility. Worse, we could have the crew and warheads. That would have been a national disaster."

A Ministry of Defence spokesman insisted nuclear security had not been breached. Inquiries are under way on both sides of the Channel.

A statement from the First Sea Lord, Admiral Sir Jonathan Band, said: "Two submerged SSBN, one French and the other UK, were conducting routine national patrols in the Atlantic Ocean.

"Recently, the two submarines came into contact at very low speed. Both submarines remained safe and no injuries occurred.

"We can confirm that the capability remained unaffected and there has been no compromise to nuclear safety. HMS Vanguard returned safely to Faslane under her own power on 14 February."

Something must've been wrong with the G-Diffuser for that to happen.

Also a pretty shitty radar in a sub carrying nuclear shit.

There are French and British subs carrying nuclear warheads on "routine patrols" atm?

Pretty much any country with a navy and nukes has this right now, why is that a shocker?

I think the shocker is: Why are these subs carrying nukes just for patrols? In the case of a sudden nuclear war??

In the same context of, local police patrolling a neighbourhood with a convoy (including a tank and mobile missile launchers).

I thought the general consensus as far as nuclear weapons are concerned these days is that we want the whole world to do their best not to have anybody "sitting on the button" as much as possible.

It's a deterrant to a nuclear attack on the UKl. If someone manages to surprise us and wipes out the uk, these subs are the offshore assets that'll return the favor. Can pretty much guarantee every nation with access to stuff like this has a similar setup.

Astarael: That's actually a scary thought. I've not considered that before.

Actually, it does more good than harm. Knowing a country could respond to a strike on the homeland with a nuclear strike from unknown locations in the ocean with very little way to stop it is a pretty good deterrent. Knowing you can't just wipe out a country means an attack has to have the right kind of support behind it.

Ya I'm not sure why it's so surprising to people. Especially since it's the type of thing that once one country does it, all the rest that can will too.

Somehow a submarine used as a "backup plan" to say "well if you own us the 3 guys that are left are going to own you with these here nuclear missiles" just doesn't seem to fit into what I would refer to as a "routine patrol."

No one type of Submarine is used for patrols. Every vessel is required to patrol different areas around the year. Just because a submarine is carrying nuclear weaponry doesn't mean they just sit around and wait for shit to hit the fan. It also doesn't mean the only artillery they carry is nuclear. They're the same as a regular submarine excluding the fact that they are also carrying nukes.

    That's comforting...

Well you seem very shocked over something that has been going on for awhile and is pretty much common knowledge among any nuclear world power, just trying to make it simple

It's not that I'm shocked... I just thought we'd gotten to a point where we weren't just trolling the ocean with multitudes of nukes like it's just... natural or something.

They don't use radar on a sub, they use sonar, and even then they don't use active sonar because it gives up their position. They use passive sonar. In other words hydrophones manned by people trained to listen to the noises in the ocean to figure out what's around them. Yeah, that's right. Nuclear propelled submersible boats carrying nuclear missiles coasting through inky black waters many hundreds of feet below the surface where sunlight doesn't reach, with nothing more than a guy wearing headphones and charts to guide them. And people are surprised at a collision.
