Other comic book related movie news

    new release dates;

    The Green Hornet - June 25, 2010
    Spoiler: show
When co-founder of a San Francisco newspaper THE DAILY SENTINEL, JOHN PAUL, is shot in his home, FRANK SCANLON, district attorney, considers John's position as a crime and politics reporter and rules out robbery as a motive. BRITT REID, publisher for the Sentinel, promises his father, DAN, who'd co-founded The Sentinel with John, that he won't rest until he finds out who did this.

At the paper, John's former position as executive TV producer is taken over by REX, a shameless opportunist, who exhibits not one trace of remorse for the company's recent loss. In fact, the first meeting he holds in his new office is with a goon named TOMMY, who inquires about what Rex plans to do with his newfound corporate capital. When Rex suggests that he's thinking of bowing out with his cut after an illicit job they've just completed, Tommy won't allow it and tells Rex that the crew needs something of him--the ability to communicate anywhere, in real-time, without being detected via discreet usage of his TV station for two weeks--if anyone can manipulate info, it's newsmen, he says. With the right people in key positions within The Sentinel, he concludes, anything is possible. He promptly gives Rex a short list of people to fire.

In the forensics lab, a print is lifted from inside John's condo--its match is Mr. YAO XCHAN, a known Chinese national drug smuggler with gang connections, most recently known for his attempt to smuggle over a quarter ton of dope into San Francisco via commercial shipping. Frank calls Britt with his address, and Britt and Kato promptly change outfits--Kato, into hat and mask, with gloved hands, and Britt into a green suit, clad as the GREEN HORNET. They both hop in his car, the BLACK BEAUTY, type in the address, key in commands, and send a metallic black bee that rises from a small door on the car's hood to fly off under their control and give them closer views of their destination. After it locates Xchan, they break into his apartment and Hornet questions him about his whereabouts during the shooting three days ago, but he doesn't answer--he finally admits that he had pulled the trigger himself. He'd been paid by someone, but just before his eyes glaze over and he passes out, all he can utter of the name is, "Choo... choo..."

In Britt's office, the following day, one of the TV news engineers, BILL, complains that Rex is firing all the good guys and bringing in a bunch of new guys he's never even heard of. Britt question Rex about where these new people are from, and he vaguely responds that they're the cream of the crop, from all over the country. Britt says he'll be watching--but in the meantime, no more personnel changes.

MIKE, a reporter, tells Britt about the Hornet being out last night, and victimizing a suspect in John's murder--after the cops took the suspect to jail, his million dollar bail had been posted by a woman named SUE ANN LEE. Britt tells him to get the story out as soon as possible.

On the evening of the Sentinel's 30th anniversary party, Rex officially introduces Britt to his new TV crew--RAY JORDAN, BRUCE KONIG, TIM SMITH, TOMMY CHEW--and Sue Ann Lee. Not only does Britt recognize that name as that of the woman who'd bailed out Xchan, but he recognizes the name "Chew," from the sounds that Xchan had uttered before passing out. He tells Kato about it and they conclude something must be going on, and they need to find out what as soon as possible. He tells Kato to get a pen...and leave it on the group's table.

When they download the pen's data later, they hear two voices engaging in a choppy discussion about all their distributors being in place, about dope inside trucks, about a fake game, a great idea, airwaves, and only one thing to worry about--Bill, the nosy engineer and Britt, if he finds out. They decide they'll take care of Bill tonight. Upon hearing this, Britt and Kato decide to suit up and follow Bill home from the party. Once Bill gets to his garage, three men hop out of an SUV that's been trailing him, drag him out of his car and start beating him, until the Green Hornet appears with a three foot bat and invites himself to "play." He and Kato beat the thugs so badly that they must scramble away with the little that is left of their dignity. The Green Hornet bugs their car before they flee, then calls an ambulance for Bill, before speeding away himself.

They track the thugs down and meet them at a cannery, where Tommy scolds his goons for blowing it--Bill's still in the picture.

The next morning, Frank calls Britt demanding to know what he/Green Hornet and Kato are doing--now everyone thinks that the Green Hornet beat up Bill. On top of that, they're responsible for a shooting on the freeway and an explosion by the docks--both of which are all over the papers. Frank says they must be getting close to something and he knows it has something to do with Xchan, but they need to bring him in now, or he's going to split the country.

Later, at home, Britt pulls up the TV station's new numbers challenge game on his computer and studies it. He asks Rex about it the next day at work, and he tells him it's a new TV game they developed to air during news breaks starting tonight. The winner gets a cash prize, and it'll be good for the sponsors as well as for the station. Rex's responses convince Britt that it all seems legit. He asks why all his new hires have been sporting injuries around the office since the weekend. Rex claims that he heard they'd had a little football game this weekend.

Mike comes to see Britt about the piece in the paper on the explosions down by the docks the other night--he thinks there's more to it than just chemicals catching fire in a dumpster. He'd done some snooping around and found out about more activity that night--a truck involved in a chase, and he'd seen it himself, behind a building, completely wrecked and burned out. He heard there was a break in, but most of the guys around the cannery didn't want to talk about it at all, and he doesn't think the police report even scratched the surface. Britt suggests that they just let the cops pursue this one. Still, Mike insists there could be a much bigger story there, but Britt insists he can't put his reporters in danger. When Mike says the Black Beauty was also seen in the area that night, Britt dismisses it as a joke.

Later, at home, Britt watches the debut of the Super Secret Numbers Challenge, and compares it with information he'd retrieved from the docks the night he and Kato had gone snooping around. He deciphers that some of the numbers refer to an address, others correspond with the day's date, and the next numbers could represent military time. From that he gathers: Clay St. and Taylor, ten o'clock tonight. He and Kato suit up and drive there, to catch a group of men in a truck full of mysterious boxes containing heroin inside ornate vases. Britt calls Frank and tells him to send someone downtown to Clay and Taylor. Later, Frank congratulates him on a job well done--except for the bodies he'd left him, cuffed and executed. But Britt swears they had all been alive when he left.

In the office, CASEY, Britt's secretary, overhears a conversation in the TV editing room between Tommy and Rex--one speaker orders that if anyone sees the Green Hornet, they're to shoot him and his driver on sight. When they spot her near the door, Casey tries to play off any possibility that she's heard them, but they seem to be on to her eavesdropping.

Immediately she calls Britt and tells him she wants to discuss something, but not over the phone. On her way to "lunch" however, a large man snatches her from behind and tosses her into the backseat of a black BMW, between Xchan and another man, who smothers her with a cloth to her face until she passes out.

LISA, Casey's friend, who's witnessed it all, calls Kato to report this to him.

Casey's kidnappers take her to a rental room and lock her inside until they're done with a "project" they're working on.

The Green Hornet and Kato track down Rex and take him to a remote park to interrogate him about Casey's whereabouts. He finally admits that Tommy has her at his place, and gives them the address. They find the rental room, beat up the goons that are guarding it, and rescue Casey.

Though Casey's supposed to be "missing," she and Britt go out to dinner, and she spots one of the kidnappers while they're out. She demands that Britt kiss her, to protect her cover. They trail the kidnappers in his car and watch behind tinted windows as they and other workers load more boxes into another truck. They both recognize Tommy, as well as Xchan among them and try to figure out what's going on. Britt calls Kato to meet him in thirty minutes.

The Green Hornet and Kato invade the operation on the docks and Rex flees and calls CC to tell her he needs to talk to her. They'll go out for a nightcap.

He meets her at the Global Marketing office and asks where she'd like to spend the rest of her life--tonight. She names the Bahamas, and he whips out two cases full of money. As she asks where he'd gotten so much money from, someone fires at the door. Rex asks if she'd told anyone he was there, and she names Tommy. He panics and tells her they have to split, but she says she wants nothing to do with this. But he tells her it's too late--Tommy will kill them both. When Tommy and his thugs burst inside, Rex reasons that at least the cops should be there in a minute; but CC tells him she'd turned off the alarm because she thought they were leaving. Just as Tommy turns the gun on Rex and CC, the Green Hornet and Kato burst in and corner him in the office. They leave them all immobilized inside and outside of the building for the cops to retrieve.

Dwight's thinking of all the ways he's screwed up and what he'd give for one clear chance to wipe the slate clean, to dig his way out of the numb grey hell that is his life. And he'd give anything. Just to cut loose. Just to feel the fire. We haven’t heard anything about X-Men: First Class since it was announced that Gossip Girl writer/creator Josh Schwartz would be writing the script, so I was pleased to read that Schwartz made a few comments about it during an interview with MTV. Obviously he can’t reveal anything, but what he did say was telling.

“No, that’s not true,” Schwartz told MTV News when asked if he passed on directing “X-Men: First Class,” as some rumors suggested. “But I would be terrified to have the first thing I direct be a giant franchise movie.”

While Schwartz was careful not to reveal any details about the film’s plot, its place in the current “X-Men” film franchise, or just about any other aspect of the project, he did offer up some thoughts on what it won’t be.

“The ‘Dark Phoenix’ storyline is probably the high point of the comics’ storytelling,” said Schwartz when asked about some of his favorite X-Men stories. “But they did that. So we’ll find more fertile soil somewhere else.”

“I’m not really allowed to say anything,” he added. “They’re watching me as we speak. It’s exciting, it’s a huge honor and we’re just getting started.”

The fact that Schwartz has thought about doing the Dark Phoenix storyline is reassuring. It shows that this won’t be just ‘Gossip Girl meets X-Men’ and they will actually be taking serious storylines from the comics.

We have been getting lots of superhero movie news recently. Iron Man 2 and Green Lantern are edging closer to filming, and Marvel are starting to line up the dots for the big Avengers movie in 2012. However, if you look close enough you will realise one thing. It’s a cockfest. After the bad apples such as Catwoman, Elektra and Aeon Flux, studios have steered clear of female driven superhero movies. However now according to IESB the Wonder Woman movie is picking up speed at Warner Bros.

There was a regime change late last year over at Silver Pictures, Andrew Roma is now the man in charge and will be the man spearheading the live action Wonder Woman project along with mega producer Joel Silver.

Sources in the Burbank studios have confirmed there is quite a bit of movement on the WW front. With Green Lantern going into production this year, it looks like Princess Diana may finally get the go ahead from WB.

WB and Silver Pictures are in the early stages but they are eager to get started on the movie. Sources tell IESB that WB is looking for new writers on the project and have been taking pitches the last few weeks.

In the past there have been a number of starts and stops with the Wonder Woman movie. Megan Gale was set to play the character in Justice League: Mortal, however Warner Bros. have put the movie on told for the time being. They have made it clear that they want to follow Marvel’s lead by introducing the characters in solo movies and then joining them together in a movie further down the line. Green Lantern will be Warner Bros. first outing, so I wouldn’t be surprised if they were planning on Wonder Woman to follow him.

I've heard all kinds of things about "Sin City 2" over the past couple of months, but the one thing I would really like to know is: when will this movie actually happen?

Back in December, Frank Miller spilled a few details about the script being done and the movie potentially being ready to shoot by April. Well, April rolls around in less than a month, so that seems unlikely.

On the other hand, ComingSoon recently talked to Rosario Dawson, who played Gail in "Sin City" and will be back for the sequel. And according to her, "Sin City 2" seems to be moving forward... slowly.

"I just talked to Frank about it though and said he finished it a couple of months ago so I'm really excited to get it going," she said about the script. "Supposedly it's going to happen in 2009."

And here is what she told ComingSoon about her character in the sequel: "I get to wear a mask in this one. Is that specific enough?"

Okay, I guess that means we will see "Sin City 2" one day after all.
So what about that 'Sin City2'? - The Screening Log - blogging film

According to IESB Josh Harnett is one of the actors on Marvel’s short list to play Loki in Thor.

Who does Brannagh want to bring this evil character to life? Try Josh Hartnett. IESB sources say Hartnett has met with Brannagh as well and he is currently on a very short list to play the villain in the film.

Word is Josh and his camp are really interested because he has never played a villain before and after Heath Ledger’s Oscar win for the latest comic book villain, Hartnett is intrigued by the character.

Hartnett stands at 6 foot 3 inches, so he would be a great opponent to whoever lands of role of Thor.

Katee Sackhoff Wants to Play Typhoid Mary from Daredevil?

I know, I know, I hate these "she was seen with" rumors, too, but this one is far more legitimate than the Eva Longoria story from last year. Over on the blog for the Golden Apple comic book shop in Hollywood (where I buy all my comics from), they mention that "Battlestar Galactica" actress Katee Sackhoff stopped by their store looking for "all the Typhoid Mary comics we had and has hopes to get a part for a Marvel movie." Those familiar with Daredevil comics know that Typhoid Mary is one of his lovers and longtime foes. Could that Daredevil reboot that was rumored about last year actually be taking shape already?

Rumors of a new Daredevil movie first arose late last year when IESB talked with Fox's Tom Rothman, who said that a reboot "is something we are thinking very seriously about." Since then, we haven't heard anything, probably because Fox was focusing all of their efforts on Wolverine and only talking about spin-offs related to that franchise. But now with this update, it may mean that the project is actually moving along quickly. Can they already be casting? Do they even have a script? Is Jason Statham still in the running to play Matt Murdock? These are some big questions that I wish we had the answers for already.

We all know that in 2003, Daredevil came to the big screen starring Ben Affleck. However, I don't know anyone who thinks of it as one of their favorite comic book movies, by any means, so a reboot wouldn't be a bad idea. I'll leave the discussion open for now, because I don't want to get further into this until it's official.

Sam Raimi talks Spider-Man 4. Acknowledges mistakes from previous films.

Cinematical recently got the chance to speak to Drag Me to Hell director Sam Raimi, and obviously questions about Spider-Man 4 came up. Raimi spoke mostly about the mistakes he has made with the previous Spider-Man films, and that it is partly because of those mistakes that made him decide to make Spider-Man 4.
    __________
As far as Spider-Man, I’ve learned a lot of lessons about what people didn’t like and missteps that I’d made. But I learned those lessons on the previous two, I was just a little quieter about them. I made a lot of mistakes, and it’s part of the reason I so want to make this next story of Peter Parker.”

Raimi continued, “I really think I know in my heart who the character is, and I haven’t quite been able to sing the song yet, or bring it out to the extent or degree of detail that I feel in my heart that I can. And I may not be successful, but I still feel like I know it better than I’m able to play it; I feel like the kid that really practiced at the piano recital, with years of comic books, and when I got to my other recitals, I sometimes made some missteps with them. There’s a whole crowd there and they think that’s as well as I know the piece, but I really do know it a lot better than that and I would like one more chance at that character. The Spider-Man films, I’ve made mistakes, but I really do look at them as things that I’ve learned, and hope that when I apply what I’ve learned to this next one, I really make a film that people enjoy and is really true to the character in a fresh, original way. That’s my goal.”
    __________
I enjoyed Spider-Man 3, however there were a couple of issues that stuck out, such as emo Peter Parker, too many villains, and the huge amount of coincidences that took place simply to move the story forward. I have a feeling that if Raimi is left to make the film he wants he could make a great Spider-Man 4.

Sam Raimi also spoke to SplashPage (he’s on the rounds for Drag Me to Hell) and revealed that he has spoken to Kirsten Dunst about her returning:
    __________
“Kirsten? I have talked with her, and she’s very excited about the possibility of it,” Raimi revealed, insisting that although Dunst is willing, it will be the director’s call to make after he reads the script by Lindsay-Abaire. “I think I’m going to have to read the screenplay and make sure everything we’ve talked about is working, before I could honestly tell you absolutely how [Dunst’s possible return] would go.”

    Marvel have their Loki…Tom Hiddleston!

A few days ago we heard that Marvel and director Kenneth Branagh had cast Chris Hemsworth as Thor in…Thor. Now the same source that broke that news is now reporting that Marvel have decided who will play Thor’s nemesis, Loki. The actor’s name is Tom Hiddleston and just like Hemsworth, not many people know who he is. However casting unknowns seems to be the latest thing at the moment (Chris Pine, Sam Worthington etc.), so while it is a risk, it doesn’t necessarily mean the film will flop because of it.

    From Deadline Hollywood:
    __________
I’ve learned that Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige and Thor director Kenneth Branagh have cast their Loki, the nemesis to the lead in Thor set for release on May 20, 2011. He’s Tom Hiddleston, unknown to American audiences but an award-winning British actor and Royal Academy Of Dramatic Arts (RADA) graduate. He played Winston Churchill’s son in HBO’s The Gathering Storm, but, more to the point, note that Hiddleston starred in Ivanov opposite Sir Kenneth on the London stage and also starred with him in the BBC miniseries Wallander. Marvel Studios won’t confirm my news, but Hiddleston had been considered as a possible Thor.
    __________
Now that casting is being finalized expect to hear who else will be joining the cast of Thor over the upcoming days/weeks.

Josh Schwartz ‘having a blast’ with X-Men: First Class

When Josh Schwartz, writer and creator of Gossip Girl, Chuck and The O.C., was announced as writer of X-Men: First Class people were a bit unsure whether they liked the idea or not. When someone is hired in a creative role you tend to look at their past work to see what to expect, and there was a general assumption that it would be X-Men meets The O.C. However, the more we’ve been hearing about it the more it appears we will be getting an actual X-Men movie and not some teenage high school drama. Schwartz said back in February that the Dark Phoenix storyline had already been used (in X3) so he’ll “find more fertile soil somewhere else”. He is obviously thinking big in terms of the storyline, and now he has revealed how he got involved to THRfeed:
    __________
You’re a bit of an unconventional pick to write an “X-Men” movie. Did they approach you?

Schwartz: It’s something I’d always fantasized about doing. I knew (producer) Simon Kinberg and he approached me about it. I’ve started it and I’m having a blast, but I’m not allowed to say anything more.
    __________
From what we have heard so far the characters involved will be young versions of Cyclops, Beast, Jean and Storm, so Halle Berry, Famke Janssen and co. won’t be returning, however Patrick Stewart will likely return as Charles Xavier as the film takes place during the first year of his ‘School for Gifted Youngsters’.

IMDB says X-Men: First Class will be released in 2010, however 2011 is looking more likely seeing as though the script isn’t finished (although Fox have a Magneto script they could be making use of *cough*).

Green Lantern pushed back to Summer 2011

Warner Bros. have decided to push back the release of Green Lantern from December 2010 to June 2011 according to Box Office Mojo. No word whether this will affect plans to start shooting in September or whether the move is to give director Martin Campbell more time for post-production and special FX.

There has yet to be an official announcement regarding who will be playing Hal Jordan, although names such as Shawn Roberts, Brian Austin Green and Bradley Cooper have been flying around the interweb over the past few days.

The shift just adds to the greatness that will be ‘Summer 2011′, with Spider-Man 4, Thor, Captain America and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part II all being released. There is also a possibility we could see Batman 3 slot itself somewhere in there too.

Bubble Gum's Bazooka Joe Headed to the Big Screen?!

You can't be serious? THR has officially announced that Michael Eisner (former Disney CEO before Dick Cook) is developing an adaptation of Bazooka Joe, the comic strip that comes with Bazooka bubble gum. Eisner has hired new college graduate and first-time writer Mark Hammer to write the script. Bazooka Joe has been a comic strip used to advertise the gum since the 1950s. The very young-looking Joe, who wears an eye patch for reasons never explained, has child-friendly misadventures, and is sometimes joined by a host of friends. Somehow I can't believe this makes for a good adaptation, but believe it or not it's happening.

In 2007, Eisner purchased the trading card company Topps, which owns the gum and comic, and is why Eisner is developing this movie. I don't have much to say about this, besides the obvious complaints about Hollywood running out of ideas. I mean, Eisner is just doing the smart thing and using a familiar brand name to sell his movie. I guarantee that the Bazooka Joe comic strip does not have enough of a story behind it to be too inspirational, so I'm sure they're going to beef it up and turn it into a big, bad, action adventure movie about Bazooka Joe. Does that make a difference? Not really. It's still worth complaining about.

Top Cow's Aphrodite IX Comic Headed to the Big Screen

"This is just the kind of franchise we love: a visually stunning world, amazing effects, a great story and a hot, kick-ass babe in the lead. What could be better?" That's what producer Larry Kasanoff said about this comic book series. What could be better, you ask? How about a good movie, with a good director, and a good actress in the lead. I haven't even read the comic and this already reeks of Aeon Flux or Underworld. Top Cow's comic series Aphrodite IX, about a cyborg assassin who achieves self-awareness and begins searching for her origins, is being adapted for big screen in 3D by a group of big production companies.

Here's the thing - Wanted was originally a Top Cow comic, so the publisher is hoping that more of their titles will achieve the same amount of immense success as that did. But unfortunately I don't think it'll be that easy. Wanted was only good because everything came together perfectly - and by everything, I mean Angelina Jolie, James McAvoy, and specifically, director Timur Bekmambetov. But I'm already expecting Aphrodite IX to be one of those glossy, big-budget, half-CGI sci-fi action movies that plays in January to audiences that they can trick into seeing it. Am I so wrong? Is Aphrodite IX better than that?

Sin City 2 could start filming next year

It’s been 4 long years since Sin City hit our screens and ever since then we’ve been hearing that the sequel is coming…eventually. However, this time it seems it might actually be happening, as Robert Rodriquez spoke to IGN and revealed that he has recently been speaking to “some of the players” and filming could begin as early as next year.

“People have been talking about Sin City 2 since the first one came out,” Rodriguez said. “Whenever I’m out and about, people say, ‘When’s Sin City 2 coming? When’s Sin City 2 coming?’ They’ve been asking that for years. So this probably will add to that, certainly.”

Rodriguez added that he had a few other commitments he had to complete before moving on to Sin City 2, but he is beginning talks with his creative team and could begin filming as early as next year.

“I actually had a phone call with some of the players in it today, but I was on a plane so I missed it,” he said. “So next week we’re going to talk about it some more and get a timing on when we’d be doing it. But there’s a lot of people who are interested in it. … We are definitely going to do that one.

As for the story in the film, Rodriguez said that it will include the Sin City story “A Dame to Kill For” as well as new additional material written by Miller himself.

“There’s a lot of stories,” Rodriguez said. “That was sort of the approach I took to it. That’s why there’s three stories in the [first] movie, because I thought, ‘I love this material, but gosh, what happens if it’s not successful and I don’t get to make a part two and part three. I still want to see “The Big Fat Kill” and “That Yellow Bastard.”‘ So I wanted to put them all in one movie so I could at least get some of these stories out of my system. But there’s still so many books and so many stories to do.”
