Paramount Pictures confirmed today that they will officially be making a fourth Paranormal Activity film. This news is not surprising at all, as I think we all knew it was going to happen. It costs so little to make the films, yet they bring in a hell of a lot of money! I've enjoyed watching all of the Paranormal Activity films, and I'm looking forward to seeing how they go about telling the next story. I imagine we will be watching the film in Super 16 or Super 8 style film footage and that it will tell the story of their grandmother and her witchy ways. Are you interested in seeing Paranormal Activity 4?

The news was released in a recent press release where the film was named as part of a list of movie they were developing. Here's that press release:

In 2012, Paramount’s release slate highlights include “World War Z,” a zombie thriller starring Brad Pitt and directed by Marc Forster, “G.I. Joe: Retaliation,” the next installment in the global franchise starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Channing Tatum, a new chapter in the “Paranormal Activity” franchise, and “The Dictator,” starring Sacha Baron Cohen and directed by Larry Charles, the team behind “Borat.”

Horrible Bosses was one of my favorite comedies of 2012, and today it's being reported that the screenwriters of the first film, John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein, have been brought back in to write the sequel. I think it's great we'll get to see a Horrible Bosses 2... all we can hope for is that it will be just as funny as the first.

Jason Bateman, Charlie Day, and Jason Sudeikis are expected to reprise their roles in the film, and according to THR the studio is in early talks with Seth Gordon to direct the sequel as well.

Bridesmaids was a critical and box office success last year. The ensemble comedy brought in $288 million on a budget of $32 million. The film, penned by Kristen Wiig and Annie Mumolo, has also been received Golden Globe, SAG, and PGA nominations, which add up to a possible Oscar nomination. Universal Pictures wants to do a sequel (as you can expect), so why hasn't one been announced?
According to THR, Wiig has refused to do a reprise and stated, "We aren't working on that. Annie and I aren't planning a sequel. We are writing something else." Wiig has been focusing on small dramas, such as the upcoming film Friends With Kids, Imogene, and The Comedian opposite Robert De Niro for director Sean Penn. She is currently adapting the novel Clown Girl, which she hopes to direct.

This news has caused a bunch of speculation as to why. Some say that Wiig and the rest of the cast were not happy with their bonuses from the film. Universal gave each of them only $100,000, which came across as a little low given the box office. Universal's Ron Meyer even offered Wiig an eight-figure paycheck, but she still would not budge.

Sources close to the project have stated Universal is intent on a sequel and may move forward without Wiig. Here is what they had to say:

"We are over the moon with the success of Bridesmaids, and if we do a sequel we want to get it right. We are talking to filmmakers now about concepts, and if the right one emerges, we'll move forward."
It is not known if original director Paul Feig would be involved, but Melissa McCarthy will likely be a key player in the sequel. Producer Judd Apatow is not on board with Universal moving forward with a different team for the sequel:

"The key is we have to come up with an idea that is as good or better than the first one. We don't want to do it unless it can be great. I don't think anyone has had the brain space to think about it yet. Hopefully that can begin this year."
With all of these issues behind the scenes, fans may have to wait awhile for the sequel.

Remember when Nicolas Cage was going to star as Superman & Tim Burton was going to direct? Well the concept art for "Superman Lives" has been released.

    http://geektyrant.com/storage/2011-p...zzhwo1_500.jpg
    “RECOVERY SUIT” SUPERMAN
Superman wears this suit in the rejuvenation chamber in the Fortress of Solitude.
Suit is laden with Kryptonian technology, including triangular-shaped energy ports for “plugging” Superman into the Eradicator technology (for restoration of his powers).
Energy “circulates” visibly through the sculpted Kryptonian power matrix (use of light pipe and translucent areas on the figure).
Likely to be dark metallic blue with light accent colors.
    http://geektyrant.com/storage/2011-p...zzhwo1_500.jpg
    ERADICATOR SUIT SUPERMAN
Special suit made from Eradicator technology that restores Superman’s powers during the darkness on Earth.
Encloses Superman entirely to completely hide his identity; creates a powerful new silohuette for Superman.
Suit magnifies all of Superman’s traditional powers.
Sleek and aerodynamic metallic suit that pulses with light energy (light piping).
Includes smooth armor accented with hieroglyphic designs
    http://geektyrant.com/storage/2011-p...zzhwo1_500.jpg
    CLASSIC SUIT SUPERMAN
Superman appears in this suit in the beginning of the movie, until his “death.”
Reflects an updated” 90’s look” to Superman’s traditional suit.
Maintains signature colors of the blue tights with the red cape.
Key design elements include the all new, contemporized “S” shield, and the addition of chest armor and shoulder pads.
    http://24.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_lx...zzhwo1_500.jpg
    ERADICATOR
Created by Jor-EI, Superman’s father, to be Superman’s “protector” and to rescue him from Death.
Embodies the “newtechnology” and the “good” of Krypton. Is a power source that never runs out.
Comes to “life” in the Fortress of Solitude where he re-activates Superman’s signature technology.
Can take different forms depending on the situation and the specific need required to protect Superman.
Appears in the movie in two different forms: 1)as a humanoid; 2)as “special suit” for energizing Superman during the all-encompassing darkness.
As a humanoid, the Eradicator is majestic, wisely and imposing.
Has a heroic body, composed of pure energy, that is clothed is translucent robes.

Paramount Pictures has set the release date for Paranormal Activity 4 for October 19th, 2012. It's not really surprising news as all the other movies have been released right before Halloween.

New Line is set to give Police Academy the remake treatment. Variety reports that Tosh.0's Scott Zabielski is making his feature film directorial debut. He won the coveted gig over more experienced directors, after completing actual police academy training as a reserve officer in West Hollywood. The script was co-written by David Diamond and David Weissman. The film's original producer, Paul Maslansky, is returning to produce the remake. Production is expected to begin next year, after casting is completed.

The original was a box office success when it was released in 1984. It stayed atop the box office for three weeks and then dropped down a slot. It regained the top spot for it's fifth and sixth weekends and continued doing well throughout the summer. The film grossed more than $81 million domestically, even though it never showed on more than 1,587 screens.

Universal Pictures is prepping a Bruce Almighty sequel for Jim Carrey. Variety reports that the studio is intent on moving forward with a sequel to the 2003 film. The first film was a huge hit at the box office, raking in $500 million worldwide. The studio has hired Jarrad Paul and Andrew Mogel (Hot Tub Time Machine, Yes Man) to write the script.

At this time it is not known if Morgan Freeman and Jennifer Aniston would return. Tom Shadyac has not directed a scripted film since Evan Almighty, but it would be cool to see him back in the director's chair.

Why do they think we need a sequel to Bruce Almighty? Jim Carrey can't get any other work?

If you are looking forward to seeing the sequel to Avatar, don't hold your breath. Bleeding Cool reports that James Cameron's blockbuster sci-fi sequel won't hit theaters for four years. When the sequels were first announced, they were tentatively scheduled for 2013 and 2014. We are getting closer and closer to 2013, and production has not started. Jon Landau was in London doing press for the upcoming Titanic 3D release. At the event he revealed that the first sequel is “four years away.”

Based on that, we could see Avatar 2 by Christmas 2015, but it is more likely for 2016. Avatar 3 is likely set for a year later, with performance capture and cinematography being done back-to-back with the second film.

Bleeding Cool reports that Landau promised Avatar 2 "was going to showcase advanced technology, from the 3D camera system used to the CG and performance capture, but also in terms of a higher framerate."

Director Rob Marshall has offered a brief update on what is currently going on with Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean 5. A script for the fifth film was actually completed before Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides was even released. After the fourth film in the franchise got smothered with bad reviews producer Jerry Bruckhiemer wanted a rewrite because the script wasn't up good enough.

Here's what Marshall had to say about where that script currently stands, his involvement with the project suggests that he will most likely be back to direct it.

Terry [Rossio] is writing it and he’s working incredibly hard and he did a draft and rethought it all and started working on it again. You want to make sure you are asking the audience to come back to see an exciting adventure and it has to reach that caliber, and if not there’s no reason to do it. I know Johnny feels the same way: He needs to see a script, but he would be happy — if it’s the right script — to put that hat and sword back on.

THR - 'Conan' Director Marcus Nispel Takes On Horror-Action Movie 'Hack/Slash'
Hack/Slash, created by Tim Seeley and Stefano Caselli, centers on Cassie Hack, a woman who symbolizes the cliché of the lone girl who survives at the end of every horror movie. In this case, the girl not only survived but has become a killer of killers. Hack travels across the country hunting slashers in the vein of Halloween's Michael Myers, Friday the 13th's Jason Voorhees and A Nightmare on Elm Street's Freddy Krueger, along with a hulking protector named Vlad.

Chronicle director to helm FF reboot?
In a major sign of confidence in his upcoming supervillain pic CHRONICLE, helmer Josh Trank has emerged as the frontrunner to direct 20th Century Fox’s reboot of Marvel’s FANTASTIC FOUR franchise, Variety's Jeff Sneider and Rachel Abrams report. Trank has had several meetings regarding the project, but with his debut feature still three weeks away, insiders tell SHOWBLITZ that Fox is expected to wait to see how CHRONICLE opens over Super Bowl weekend before extending an official offer. That said, Fox is high on CHRONICLE, and would like to keep Trank in business with the studio. Internally, studio execs expect Trank to land the coveted helming gig.

The CW is looking to bring the Green Arrow back to the small screen with his own TV series! The network is finalizing a deal for a new hour-long superhero drama called Arrow that they hope will successfully fill the void that Smallville left when it ended.

The Green Lantern co-writers Greg Berlanti and Marc Guggenheim came up with the idea for the show and wrote the story. They will produce the series along side Fringe and Vampire Diaries writer Andrew Kreisberg whom they brought in to write the script. Kreisberg also wrote DC Comics’ Green Arrow and Black Canary.

I think it's interesting that the new series will not follow the comic book; according to Deadline the series sets the character "in a new world with an original story that is not based on the comics." Actor Justin Hartley portrayed the superhero in Smallville, but it looks as if he wont be a part of this new series, which is a shame. I really liked him as The Green Arrow/Oliver Queen.

It was also reported that Smallville director David Nutter wants to direct the project. The Green Arrow is such a great character, and I really hope this show turns out to be awesome. I would love to see another great superhero series, but Smallville will be hard to replace. I hope Berlanti and Guggenheim know what they're doing with this, especially since they are basically reinventing the story.

It doesn't look like vampires are going away anytime soon. NBC is taking the classic tale of Dracula and transforming it into a contemporary drama series. Accoroding to Deadline, NBC has what's called a “script-to-series” commitment, which means that it won’t go through a pilot stage but will end up going straight to series if the NBC executives like the script.

The series is being developed by producers Tony Krantz and Colin Callender and is being written by Cole Haddon. According to the report, the show will be set in the 1890s, and is described as "Dangerous Liaisons meets The Tudors and as a big, sweeping international soap opera that is young, sexy and supernatural."

I don't know about the rest of you, but if Tim Burton and Michael Keaton reunited for a sequel to Beetlejuice I would be excited as hell! I love that movie, and it would be extremely fun to see that character brought back to life. A few months ago it was announced that Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter author Seth Grahame-Smith was going to take a crack at writing a script. This all came together while Smith and Burton were working together on Dark Shadows. Burton confirms that he gave Smith his blessing, and that he would actually be interested in doing it.

When MTV asked him if it true that he was considering doing another Beetlejuice film, he said,

Yes. I love that character, and Michael [Keaton] is so great in it. I always think about how great and fun that character was, so I just said to ["Vampire Hunter" writer] Seth [Grahame-Smith], "If you have some idea about it, go for it, and then I'll look at it freshly." In the past, I tried some things, but that was way back when. He seemed really excited about it.
When asked if any ideas have been run by him he said,

No. I told him to try some stuff, but he hasn't come back to me yet. Michael was so great in it. I'm sure he'd strangely tap right back into it.
As far as his Dark Shadows film goes, the film is currently in post-production, and the director revealed that he has incorporated time travel as a storytelling device in the film.

Here's how that part of the interview went down...

With over 1,200 episodes of the original series to draw upon, what was important to you to retain?

Burton: It's got such a strange vibe. And it's not something that a lot of people necessarily know. You're trying to do a weird soap opera. I felt really lucky, because the cast is really good. People like Michelle [Pfeiffer] grew up watching it. Some of the cast knew about it. Some didn't, but they were all game for it — getting into the weird spirit of what "Dark Shadows" was. It has a weird sense of heightened melodrama. There was a generation of us who would run home from school to watch it. That's probably why we were such bad students. We should have been doing homework; we were watching "Dark Shadows" instead. It was hard to put into words the tone it was. It had a weird seriousness, but it was funny in a way that wasn't really funny. We just had to feel our way through it to find the tone. We didn't do any real rehearsals, because the cast all came in at different times. But there was an old photo of the [original] cast which I always remembered, so a couple days before shooting, we got the whole cast together to take a similar shot so everyone could see each other and get that vibe from doing a group photo. That helped set the tone more than anything.
Some of it takes place in the 1700s, but most of it takes place in 1972, is that right?

Yeah it goes back, but it's mainly in 1972, which to the era of "Dark Shadows" is the modern era. To me, it was a scary time.
Does the film leave that house much?

A little bit, but the thing about "Dark Shadows" was it was a very hermetically sealed world. It's mainly the internal family melodrama. You get a little bit of the sense of the world, but it's like "Grey Gardens," where these people are in their own sort of world.

There seems to have been a lot of interesting TV shows announced this week. First there was a Dracula series, then a Green Arrow series, now we've learned that the A&E network is developing a series that will play out as a prequel to Alfred Hitchcock's classic film Psycho.

The series will be called Bates Motel, and it will "delve into how Norman Bates’ dark, twisted backstory from childhood through his teen years and will chronicle how his mother, Norma, and her lover damaged Norman, helping shape the most well-known serial killing motel owner in history."

The series is being written by Anthony Cipriano who has written a hand full of things I haven't heard of such as shows Skate and The Jersey.
