Sure would be less risky, but what's the real reason on this? I updated sometimes with it, logged in and forgot to shutdown before doing the update.

Mainly just a hassle (see above), but atleast in older versions it would cause corrupted files and have to reinstall.

but the page for registering a new SE account isnt

I think the POL update isn't entirely done yet. Membership section is down, can't buy the add-on now either. Guess we have to wait till after 1am PDT.

I try some old accounts of friends and my old one occassionally and noticed the error message change. Oddly some of them are not longer recieving the LM-17 notice and just saying invalid password now.

Someone says this, every single version update.

When POL restarts, it doesn't know to restart in Windower! Close and reopen. Viola
