BG what would you do if someone mailed you $4,000?

So I told this girl that I'm subleasing my apartment to that the total rent would be $1,400 which includes the months of June and July, plus a $300 sublease fee. She's like okay, that's a good price yadda yadda, I'll have my dad mail you a check.

Fast forward a week later, and dad sends me a check for $4,350. I'm not sure WHERE he got that random number from, but...whoa. Now, what I'm going to do is the right thing and mail him back the difference after I cash the check to make sure it's legit. But I'm wondering if anyone here would have actually kept the money? Is it illegal to do that? I don't think I'd ever feel right if I kept it, it's like dirty money or something.

My first suspicion would be that the girl you are subleasing to told her dad it would be more $ so she could pocket the extra cash-- but she had it mailed to you.. hrmm.

I would just contact them and tell them the mistake, give the check back, destroy it, or whatever they want you to do with it. I would feel way too guilty keeping extra money from someone like that. I would hope someone would do the same if I ever did something like that (even though I have no idea where or how they got such a random dollar amount like that).
