Sigh I hope FFXI doesn't turn into a game like many f2p crappy MMOs where you can put stats on all your gear just to wave your e-peen around.
On the other hand, I wonder how augment will be implemented. Wether it will be really easy or wether it will be a lot of work, so you decide for one piece at a time and work to add stats on it.
I would expect the two orbs to be the "quested" portions, as like what you said the stones were. You also still needed crafted items though, which is sad to see that they just stomped all over some already wanted crafted items, rather then using some of those useless synths we have now.
If augmented gear can't be bazaared, AHed, traded, or d.boxed, and since the update preview with the Gambison suggests that it should be possible to augment more gear than just the Crys. Proph. rewards, maybe people who have the patch done and are .dat mining check for an NPC somewhere (probably Jeuno) who will augment gear for you?
The items clearly say: "made from (oxblood/angel skin)" which means it is more likely that it will be crafted more so than rewarded since it's VERY VERY uncommon for SE to add something as both crafted and a reward item last time was really the national quests and I think some ToAU ones?

Pld doesn't have much in ammo slot aside from Kaman (PLUS ONE), or the couple of all jobs DD pieces (I'm with Team Smart Grenade!), even if it is only possible to get one of the bigger augments on a piece of gear with one of the smaller ones, a refresh bow would be so unbelieveably badass it hurts. Then haste on the hauby... god, I dread finding out how this works.
Here's hoping my horrible thought just now (that perhaps stats will be randomly applied, and divided up by zones, cue spamming the sky NM fight for months on end trying to get a refresh augmented piece) is wrong.
That augment list is just....wow.
I'd bet there are level minimums for each type of buff. I mean, could you imagine putting a regen and a refresh on level 1 gear?
I've got a set of HQ Lv. 7 gear on my mule. I'll try to see what kind of stats I can add onto them. Mule is Lv. 10 WAR so I'll see about adding some STR, DEX, Haste%, and Accuracy+.
My hunch is that augment numbers will be dependent on the level of the piece of gear, with HQ getting +1 added to those numbers.
So, a NQ Leather Vest will get +1 STR and +1% haste, while a HQ one can get +2 STR and +2% haste.
