I don't believe they've mentioned it in the show. The books make a point to mention that those who contract the disease at an extremely early age are able to recover from it with just scarring.

They talked about it in the show. Said they called in Maesters for all over the world, or something, to find a way to stop it. I do not recall them going into specifics, but it was talked about a few seasons ago

Yeah if I remember right they said the Maesters just threw everything they could think of at it and something worked but they had no clue what it was.
