spoilery response to that
Spoiler: show
It was okay. I wasn't blown away but it was acceptable. I agree that the characters were all thrown out there very fast and anyone who hasn't read the books might have problems following who is who. Also, I think the storytelling suffers a little bit from the POVs being lost. The northern scenes weren't quite as, for lack of a better work, stark as I thought they should look. I also thought Winterfell looked silly from a distance with all those low round towers. I do think, however, that aging the kids was a good idea and that it's very helpful for the story. I think it will be much more believable for Jon and Robb to fight as mostly grown men than 13-15 year olds.

I liked the Dany scenes however and felt the pacing was fairly good for changing it to a TV show. No doubt they'll slow it way down because they're on about the 4th-5th chapter in the book for the Westeros characters but halfway through for her.
My favourite characters in the book were Dany and Tyrion, with Sansa and the Hound someplace close behind. I'm looking forward to the Tyrion scenes in this. The actor is pretty much perfect.
I didn't really like the opening credits with all those gears and such. Probably appeals to others but it just didn't do it for me for some reason.
It wasn't hard to follow for me. Parts were a bit confusing and I only think I remembered a few ppls names. But, having not read the books, it very compelling and the ending of the first episode left me w/my mouth open for a minute in shock. Also, I would have never picked up that the dwarf, the blond knight guy, and the princess were all family (well I should have, but w/everything else going on I missed over it)
Was Theon featured at all? Was he the one that was gonna kill the wolf pup and said he didn't take orders from Robb?
one could say he was... kraken wise.
...
That was pretty bad even for you Qal
It fits. Watch it again and you'll originally see a Dragon terrorizing in one of the bands. As it rotates you see a stag, lion, and wolf chasing the dragon. It ends with the lion and wolf kneeling before the stag.
The steam punk aspect to the cities kinda fits the whole cog in the machine that is the game of thrones.
Don't want to be TOO picky on the spoiler shit, but if I see stuff iffy you may see me just edit your posts and add spoiler tags.
It's hard 'cause I know some people wanna be like "BUT WHAT ABOUT WHEN X HAPPENS?"
But remember there are certain things that are going to be major cliffhangers for people who haven't read the books and are just watching the show.
ie.
Spoiler: show
Basically, if you're going to refer to things that haven't happened in the show yet, please be smart and spoiler your shit for others.
I won't be picky about talking about the current episode though because you were all awesome and bought HBO and should be watching it at the same time we are amirite? ^_~
[edit] also please don't get pissy if you think it isn't spoiler worthy and I edit it. I'm just trying to be helpful for everyone.
As someone who hasn't read the books yet, I thought the show was generally amazing. I kind of saw the ending coming, what with the mother asking Bran to stop climbing, but it still left me with my mouth wide-open. lol
The only real complaint I have is the lack of introductions. They even left several seemingly-relevant characters nameless, I think.
Also, I would have never guessed Rob and Jon were that young. They look like they're in their mid-20s, at least.
The sheer amount of characters I recognized because I read the books... it would have been insanely overwhelming had they 'named' them all I think. As it was I think that it was probably overwhelming anyway. Happy to hear that people that are not at all familiar with the books are liking it though. I am about to watch it again on On Demand. Doubt it is the last time I rewatch it this week either.
I listened to the prologue and the first two chapters prior to watching via audio book and while most of House Stark was easy to identify, for some of the cast like the Targaryens I found myself getting lost on the names and matching who was who. I didn't even understand what was being revealed between Jaime and Cersei at Jon Arryn's ceremony or that the Lannisters were a House and not like a union or tribe because I thought they were saying Lanistas, like Spartacus, lol.
I think a lot of if not all of that was due to having had read a tiny bit and having that partial yet limited view of what was happening, trying to match up scenes and things like that and not fully taking in what was happening. Watched it a second time shortly after and everything was much easier to understand and grasp.
Also, having just seen the House Sigils,Spoiler: show
Alsoalso some links:
- HBO: Inside the Episode: GoT Episode 1
- HBO: Game of Thrones Viewer's Guide: Map and Guide to Houses - I'd say check this out regardless, it's really well done and looks amazing, especially the House Guide. It shows The Hound's face as well, which seems like something that's been mentioned a few times now.
- Episode 1 Synopsis
- Heather Havrilesky's take on the first episode, someone I grew to really like from her essays during Mad Men.
And for twatter fans:

- http://twitter.com/#!/hhavrilesky and http://twitter.com/#!/hodgman had a seemingly interesting discussion on this earlier today as well, haven't read the whole thing yet.
