It seems like a scene that, unless they use it as a "hey remember this" later on, would be wasted on a viewer new to the story and meant as a wink for those already familiar. Really awesome either way.
In all honesty, the characters were introduced just as quickly and chaotically in the book. I don't think you're expected to remember every single name and description the first time they come up. Even reading the book, it took me several chapters to get straight who was related to who. I thought Theon was a Stark, I got Bran and Rickon mixed up, I didn't know Tyrion was the Imp, and that he was Jaime and Cersei's brother, etc.
They all sort themselves out over time. All of the characters will be important at one point or another, but not right off the bat, so you have time to get to know them.
This might help people:
Eddard and Catelyn (Ned and Cat) Stark have 5 Children:
Robb
Sansa
Arya
Bran
Rickon (In the book, he was younger than Bran, so that might not be him in the above picture)
Ned also has 1 son by another women:
Jon Snow (Bastards are given a last name based on the "Kingdom" they're born in. Snow is the name for Northerners)

Spoiler: show
Robert Baratheon is the King, and is married to Cersei. They have 3 children.
Joffrey was the kid on the horse when the King rode in that you just wanted to punch in the face
Myrcella might not have gotten screen time. It's possible she was the girl sitting next to Sansa at the feast, but I'm not sure yet.
Tommen I don't believe has been shown yet.
Cersei is from the House Lannister and has 2 brothers:
Jaime aka Kingslayer
Tyrion aka The Imp
These are the major players so far.
The girl next to Sansa was probably Jenye. That should be Rickon as well.
I didn't know any books existed, and I just heard about this show 2 hours ago and watched the first episode an hour and a half ago. I thought it was fantastic. I'm really happy HBO is doing something like this. I need the 2nd episode to hurry the hell up....... I really didn't understand that he was banging his own sister until I read that here. I thought that's what it was when I watched the scene but then I was thinking well I must have misunderstood and they're not related.
I see no problem with HBO throwing in tits for the hell of it, I'm not watching this show for realism.
It did seem really fast. Like 5 different hooks in the first episode.
I thought the midget was just a midget til he said he was a dwarf lol. I was expecting there to be dwarves in the show but I just thought that particular one was a midget.
He is a midget, they just go by the term Dwarf. No other races in this series so far outside of dragons/wights etc. Only humanoids are humans.

Hahaha hilarious. Thank you for clearing that up. I was wondering why his siblings weren't dwarves but he was lol.
I wouldn't say the they "threw in some tits for the hell of it". The book is actually pretty damned graphic on the sex scenes. Certainly more descriptive than what was shown in that episode. I think people just don't want to see them adding more tits than were in the book just for the sake of more tits.
I believe the whore-house scene with Tyrion and Jaime was added, but I don't mind it as it PERFECTLY depicted the relationship between Jaime and Tyrion, which is that they share the same sense of humor. They are basically exact opposites, but they can both see the irony in any situation. Futhermore, Jaime isn't disgusted by Tyrion, and Tyrion isn't impressed with Jaime (The things that isolate them from other people). I suppose you could say that in the end, their differences cancel each other out, so that all is left is their similarities, which allow them to get along very well.

FUCK YEAH
Winter is coming — back!
HBO has renewed its fantasy series Game of Thrones after airing only one episode. The show’s second season will likely debut next year and will be based on George R.R. Martin’s second book in his Song of Ice and Fire series, A Clash of Kings.
“We are delighted by the way David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have brought George R.R. Martin’s amazing book series to the screen, and thrilled by the support of the media and our viewers,” said Michael Lombardo, president of HBO. “This is the continuation of an exciting creative partnership.”
As previously reported, a Thrones renewal was likely even before the show premiered given HBO’s big investment in creating the world of Westeros and the potential back-end from international sales and DVD.
Sunday’s premiere ratings were fairly healthy too, with the drama delivering 4.2 million viewers across three airings
HOOOOOOOORAY
lol yeah I was shocked to see that already.
Also in lieu of twitter I can't stop seeing Jaime as fantasy Denis Leary now. Slightly related but Viserys looking at Daenarys and doing the "wake the dragon" thing after the bathhouse scene felt so much like a white-trash domestic abuse threat, lol. Slightly excited to find what that really means as it progresses.
edit: and holy shitballs they're off at a running start http://store.hbo.com/?pagemax=all&v=...ame-of-thrones Beer steins for a lot of the Houses and like ...20 different shirts.
Remember the kids/teenagers in the TV show are supposed to be 2-3 years older than in the book. Bran is 7 in the book but 10 in the show for example. Mainly because it's easier to get actors that way and secondly because some of the stuff the kids go through in the books, they may not want to portray that with someone so young.
Good to see the renewal already... Now I can just hope its for more then 10 episodes (better be at least 13 like most other HBO shows)
episode 2 preview. gonna be so boner
and shit, i think im gonna get one of each beer stein. Wish they had one for House Martell, their little slogan is so awesome. they are all awesome. i want to cum everywhere
Baratheon shirt is honestly pretty fuckin sweet. The GoT brand looks kind of out of place on some of them, though.
