I guess I could see that not being explored openly or publicly if it were seen as an insult to Robert's masculinity. Assuming any of this is even occurring, I'd be curious if birth defects or giveaways to inbreeding pop up. Joffrey certainly seems like one.
Inbreeding doesn't inherently lead to birth defects, it only highlights ones that are genetic recessive as far as I know. If they were in fact carriers of a genetic recessive defect, then yes, it would vastly increase the chances of the child having 2 of the same recessive gene (and thus having the child actually suffer from it, rather than just be another carrier), but if they didn't have some genetic recessive defect, there wouldn't be any issues.

Also, I don't think Robert actually even knows when he fucks her and when he doesn't. He's drunk off his ass more often than not, doesn't remember the night before when he wakes up, yet he still wakes up next to Cersei. I don't think it would be hard at all for her to convince him it was his if she were pregnant again.

I'm not sure if you started yet, but I would personally recommend holding off on reading the books until the end of the the TV show's first season because one or the other will spoil an epic part of the storyline coming up. I think it would be best to watch the TV show in whole (the first season) before you start the book.

Meh, I thought reading and watching together added to the story. It's nice to be able to visualize what you're reading.

It's not every day that you learn something new about inbred birth defects lol. re: Robert: that sounds plausible, I'd accept that unless he just makes a point to never sleep with her the way he makes a point to make Jaime guard the door while he rubs turkeys with a group of other women.

Also decided to try the 7+8 back-to-back in 2 weeks, if I can hold out lol. Have they said whether they're going to continue the next-week airing for HBOGO online or was this one time only?

edit: god I'm an idiot, I just saw that scene with Ned hearing the villagers pleas again, didn't at all put together the whole "sign of your wife's house, yeah that wife, the one who took Tyrion prisoner" and the resulting reason for such a aggressive action against Tywin. I initially thought that was just to display the differences between Ned and Robert in their rule since Robert being a shitty king is such a repeated theme.

Also, as far as the inbreeding, that was a common practice for the Targaryn's. They believed in keeping their blood "pure." Had their father not been murdered, Dany more than likely would have ended up marrying Viserys. This more than likely contributed to their father's madness, which was somewhat passed on to Viserys as well.

Edit: Point is, for some families in this world, inbreeding is perfectly acceptable and sometimes even condoned. On the whole though, most of the realm thinks it's disgusting and wrong.

A lot of people in real life believe that inbreeding even just one generation will result in children with two heads, three arms, or vestigial tails. If you've ever watched 'Gone With The Wind' there's a scene where two cousins get married and that's thought of as normal (this family almost always marries their cousins). The hypersensitivity towards inbreeding is fairly recent I think, mostly because it brings up thoughts of paedophilia I believe. I dunno, but my point is that most people believe the genetic issues show up first generation inbred always.

I think the Targaryens are modelled after the Egyptian dynasties.

I think Martin took advantage of the whole taboo around incest and has totally cashed in. After all, who doesn't think Cersei and Jaime are perfect for each other?

Yeah, it's balls but it's not even the wait so much as the actual events and seeing where this is going. I've never shot from "fuck yes" to "YOU WHORES" so quickly before.
