    Help on an astronomy question.

I'm out of town at the moment on TDY and forgot my damn textbook at home. This question is giving me a headache and I can't really find anything specific in the course modules for it online.

"Light from a source having a continuous spectrum shines on a mass of hydrogen gas. What type of spectrum would you see if you were (a) on the opposite side of the gas from the source? and (b) off to the side?"

Can anyone care to explain this to me?

This is absorption spectroscopy. The subcases are:

    a) transmission, the light absorbed by the gas positioned between the source and the detector
    b) remission, the light reflected by the gas, originating from the source and received by some detector (both diffuse and specular)

Both subjects should be easy to find in a search engine or in an astronomy course module covering spectroscopy (specifically, how elements generate different signatures because they absorb/reflect different wavelengths on the spectrum).

    New question.

What becomes of the material which isn't caught up by stars during the collapse of the original cloud?

You mean the extra dust that doesn't become part of the star? That goes to form planets and such.

    There ya go.

What doesn't get involved in planetary formation gets pushed out by stellar winds, some forms shells of material like our own cometary clouds, and some of it gets out of the stars gravity well and into the intergalactic medium again.

At least Woozie and Max got to it. I feel better now.

Usually I'm the one who's late to a science thread. I always see it after it's been up for 5 days already and people already stopped posting it.

Very true Woozie, you are notoriously late to these shin digs lol. You know something Fhq, I'd totally let myself be torn apart by a black hole in the name of science. In the words of Neil deGrasse Tyson "How cool would that be!? To be shredded alive and to have your atom's atoms torn apart would be an honor"

I am inclined to agree. Death by black hole for the unanimous win.

Now, if only there were a way to get my information back for research purposes...

    Death by black hole
Sounds like a rough sex position.

Speaking of which Woozie I know you and Max will appreciate this, but I am getting my daughter a signed copy of Origins and a poster of from Neil deGrasse Tyson for her birthday in August. I initially sent him an email to the Hayden planetarium to which he gave me a his extension.

I called him about 2 weeks ago and gave him her name, what he should put in the book and poster and such. I kept stumbling and stuttering and he said "I can tell you're one of us, anyone can call me direct but only geeks get giddy speaking to an Astrophysicist." lol

It was funny, he has that same deep voice and joking manner on the phone. It's an open number and literally anyone can call the Planetarium and dial his extension. But man, I felt fucking cool and like I was talking to a rock star. I cant wait for her birthday she's going to be stoked.

I got finals next week, so your more then welcome to answer random questions I can't google everyone. Personally, I love astronomy but at the moment can only take online classes because of the military. So it's kinda hard to ask the instructor questions when it takes like a day to get a response.

Currently writing an essay about time traveling, shit's confusing yo, lol.

Past only. We could settle endless speculation and bloodshed with one trip. I'd definitely go back in time and watch Jesús saddle up a T-Rex and watch him walk it around what is now Iraq.

But if you change the past you might never exist to have changed the past! Causing everyone's head to explode simultaneously in a shower of blood and brains which only the cockroaches will live to see.
