Brick may be a strong word. I don't think it breaks it permanently. Also for me it froze on the startup it did after the install so if you got past that you might be okay.
Redoing the update via USB to see if it helps any.

ah. Yeah, I updated, it restarted and everything seemed to work fine. Went into psn store where I had to press X two to three times sometimes to get the PS to acknowledge that I did something though.
Can you get into the recovery menu at least (turn off, then press and hold power button until it double-beeps)? It would allow you to potentially fix it whenever Sony issues a fixed firmware.
On a lighter note, Saint's Row 3 and God Eater Burst are available to NA PS+ now.
I tried the recovery menu, nothing work.
Redid the update but still broken. Gonna wait for Sony to do something before I try something drastic like restoring the system.
Update got pulled.
I don't see any fix for it from Sony's end still so I guess I'm waiting.

Sony may have enjoyed being carried around in the air by their fans ever since E3, but now it’s back to the real world where fresh problems await them. A percentage of PlayStation 3 users are reporting that firmware update 4.45 has “bricked” their systems, and no amount of rebooting and file restoring have been able to fix the issue.
The update was supposed to include Trophy notification options and “improved system stability,” but so far it’s had the opposite effect. This is a particularly bad time for something like this to occur, as many players are currently right in the middle of The Last of Us, a game no one wants to be locked out of partway through.
This should be temporary however, and it’s very unlikely the system is actually “dead.” Sony released this statement about their next steps regarding the firmware update.
“We are aware of reports that the recent PlayStation 3 system software update (version 4.45) has caused the XMB to not display on a small number of PS3 systems. We have temporarily taken 4.45 offline and are investigating the cause of the problem. We will announce when the system update is available for download as soon as possible. We apologise for the inconvenience.”
So now when you log on, you shouldn’t be prompted to update, but if you are, just don’t do it. A rough estimate of the affected systems based on forum postings is below:
Aftermaket HDDs, 500GB-1TB ~90%
Stock 500GB models ~8%
Stock 120GB models ~2%
Stock 1st-gen fat models ~ 0%
A temporary fix for the aftermarket folks is said to be finding and replacing your current HDD with your old one. Obviously your saves won’t be there, but it should solve the issue temporarily if you must play something until there’s a grand fix. I would advise against any other type of internal fiddling or hacking until we know more information or get an official solution. Hopefully that will be soon, and we won’t have another repeat of a long-winded Sony fix like when PSN was hacked and offline for weeks.
In better news, Shadow over Mystara came out yesterday.
If you want to get your groove ready for Dragon's Crown, get on this.
I havn't bother checking but does PSN have like all retail gameso n PSN?
Aka if i want to go Digital, can i go digital and not miss any games?
I don't think it has all games.
In case anyone aside from me has been affected by the patch, I guess this thread will be officially updated.

No PS3 or Last of Us till next ThursdayHi all,
Here is the latest on this issue:
We have identified the issue related to the PlayStation 3 software update (version 4.45) that impacted a small number of PS3 systems earlier this week. A new PS3 system software update is planned to be released on June 27 that resolves the issue. Thank you for your patience and understanding and we apologize for the inconvenience.
If there is any further updates between now and 6/27, we will drop them here.
We will also update on 6/27 when it is available, and steps on how to implement the solution.
Thank you
Firmware update coming back out next week, no word if it'll work for folks with affected PS3s yet.
Hotline Miami coming out on PS3/Vita this upcoming Tuesday in NA, Weds for Europe also.
[IGN link removed]
When do they replace games for PS+ usually?
Keep an eye on the official blog... they announce new PS+ games every monday (and when they're leaving). As an example:

Like 4 posts above bro.
Well at least they'll fix it.
Seeing as their firmware fucked it up, I never had a doubt that they would. But its annoying how long it's taking. I just wanna play Last of Us
