Full disclosure - This one kinda hits a little close to home for me. Not just because Bristol is my current hometown, but because I personally know the guy who banned them very well. I'll try to answer questions as long as it's not too personal.

The issue is that they were handing out stuff from the float - namely single-page copies of the Constitution - and handing ANYTHING out from a float or moving vehicle is a violation of the parade's float rules, because of safety concerns where people were running into the parade route and run the risk of getting hurt.

The lady who runs RI's Tea Party group tried to use the point that other people (namely politicians) were handing out stuff, but they were walking.

The article says that the tea party folks were running alongside the float, and not on it..
The other part that is unsettling, is that it's a lifetime ban for that organization... seems like a rather harsh punishment.
