When my Kaspersky runs out, I'll try NOD32 and see which uses less resources on my system. They seem about even in terms of catching shit, so that and the UI will be the deciding factor for me. Getting it for 3 computers for less than 30$ puts KAS way ahead though.

What's the risk factor of using Panda Cloud or other cloud-based virus scanners? The concern being that since they use other computers to scan your files, if you have a bunch of illegal shit...

Considering that they will be searching specifically for files that are part of virus.exe and not childporn.mpg I think you'll be ok.

Hitman Pro. All virus scanning is done in the cloud, so if you can still launch an exe on your computer, nothing on your computer will be able to prevent it from scanning.

Downside, Only one use per IP without paying for the software.

Microsoft doesn't even recommend using MSE as a standalone anti-virus program. They consider it as a compliment to your actual anti-virus program. It's an extra layer of protection IMO.

So i got Kaspersky internet security off ebay for pretty cheap, 3pc's, and I'm wondering if anyone has used both kaspersky AND nod32. After using KIV for a while, I'm not sure if I like it... once in a while it seems to become a little bit of a resource hog.

Ive been randomly switching peoples PCs over to MSE from other random assortments of paid and nonpaid protection programs, and ive seen MSE out perfrom numerous times, often catching things after the first initial scan where the current program missed it.

Im not sure why dude above said MS doesnt even recommend using MSE exclusivly when it finds 98.5% of all virus, torjans, and worms, 91% of spy/adware, and virtually all rootkits. MSE's bigger brother Forefront (which is virtually the same with added server and such options) is being used as a main go to for most schools and universities, and becoming very popular with businesses.

In mid 2010 MSE had 7.5% of the market share, only 3% below the top guy (avast free), and as of now they are #1 in america with 10%, and #2 worldwide behind avast free.

I suggest MSE to everyone now a days; youd figure the company who makes windows would be able to make the best program to protect it. Obvious joke there, but aside, most of all of these companys use the same definitions as everyone else; for the most part one program is as good as the other, it's just how they perfrom is the biggest difference.

What ever happened to the "AVG is shit stop using it" thread that told people to stop using free antivirus. I've been seeing a lot of threads/posts pop up recommending free antivirus lately and it is driving me nuts.

Shit I even think sonomaa made the thread lol.

For some reason a lot of stickied threads disappeared awhile back, I recovered most of them but I don't remember any AVG sticky up there. Sono edited the original post of this thread to say stop using AVG

All antiviruses except the corporate-level managed firewalls are shit these days. Nearly any online-based virus (ie, the ones you get from facebook) will go through your AV. I have stopped telling people to purchase AV since they always get re-infected a few months later. NOD seems to be one of the best ones, however I typically just tell people to use security essentials and run a manual malwarebytes scan occasionally.

Coren, I use F-Secure as my AV do you have any thoughts on it? I have never had much issues with malware, though, my online practices go a bit further than the average user. I tend to use programs like sandboxie or surf through means of a virtual machine, and I am pretty diligent on PC maintenance. I just never hear anything about F-Secure good or bad so I like to ask every once in a while.
