I'll try and search for it as you suggested but I am a little skeptical. Especially if it's a "should work".

I did stumble across this on newegg, however its way out of my price range. Apparently I can't post links yet. (gogoforumnoob) It's the below combo.
    1. Intel BX80601960: $569.99
    2. EVGA 132-GT-E768-KR: $249.99
    Combo Discount: -$24.99
    Combo Price: $794.99

I was wondering if any of the CPU/Mobo combos around $200-400 would successfully run XIV. I'd assume so. But I'd like to know if I'm not missing out too much by going $400 cheaper. I have been out of the loop as far as computer technology goes so I don't know what I'm looking at exactly. I can only really speculate.

Also I'd like to add that it doesn't include my RAM which I believe are all 1G DDR2 PC3200 x4. I'd assume that these can run UP TO DDR3, so that includes everything below it? I don't know for sure tho. Or am I screwed and need to just replace those as well?

Thanks for the input Metafox. Much Appriciated.
Only some (all?) AMD(specifically AM2/AM3 sockets) can use old DDR2, pretty much any intel setup will require buying DDR3.

Blah. FFXIV, why must you hurt so bad! Well damn. 2 steps forward, 1 step back. Do we know what the exact min specs for XIV are? I guess I'll start looking for CPUs&Mobos / combos at mim specs.

Just for confirmation purposes, PS3 version is released when?

    Expected in March for PS3.

Check this thread's OP for scores, I have 5000 in low, 2600 in high and I get pretty good performances in both very low resolution and high resolutions with a i5 750 / GTX260 build.

March 2011, but hopefully "as soon as possible" according to Tanaka.

I am in the same boat as you are - Outdated PC with hopes of PS3 being released at same time as PC version. After doing some research and browsing newegg for a while, you can easily put together a rig that will run FFXIV reasonably well for ~$600. This is what I'm looking at:

CPU: AMD phenom II x4 955 black edition @3.2ghz

    GPU: Radeon 5770 HD

ram: 4gb minimum, g.skill is a good brand

PSU: Antec, corsair, or seasonic 500w minimum (you want a reliable brand PSU, it's basically insurance for the rest of your system. A shitty PSU can fail and ruin some of your hardware in the process.)

After this you can look to cut costs when looking at your case, DVD drive, hard drive, and motherboard (depending on what features you want. In my case, I don't plan on using SLI or Xfire in the near future, so I can look at a more affordable motherboard.

If you are on a budget, my advice would be stick to an AMD processor, radeon 5770 card, and browse newegg.com for good combo deals and mail-in-rebates to save some money.

    Intel Vs. AMD?

Well Hello agien guys i just spent 4 hours researching how to build a PC and learning all about computers and how they work but i just dont understand how intel has made such a huge leap withough AMD catching on? I mean its not a bad thing seeing how it affects the market intel has to drop to compete with the averge mans income but i guess my real queston is how much better is that i7 ? and would going with the AMD be a bad choice. the i5 is still relitiviley expensive.

get back to me some of u seem like u know what ur talking about.

You will never get it to work on your laptop, sorry.

    PC noob post.

Hi, I'm on a eurotrip right now, but when I get back I'll start really working on building a desktop for this game (and others). I read as much as I could understand in this forum (not toooo computer savy) and I can figure some things out. Thanks for all your input.

My question is, in terms of building a completely new desktop, and a powerful one, was an ideal spec already suggested in this thread? If so I could possibly just base myself off such a setup to build mine, since I probably want to pay good money for a good PC (that is, if around 1000 and a bit over can be considered good money).

If not, well I'll just keep reading and figuring it out!

    Thanks.

maybe try reading the benchmark and performance thread? people are often listing what scores they got in the benchmark and what stuff they got.

as for what I'm doing, Akiyama, idk... I was bored :/

My bad, I forgot to mention that. There's like 2 near me so I just assumed they were pretty common all over.

    Via Newegg:
    * Intel Core i7-930 Bloomfield 2.8GHz LGA 1366 130W Quad-Core Desktop Processor BX80601930
    * 439927EVGA X58 FTW3 132-GT-E768-KR LGA 1366 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboD...t=Combo.439927

    * Combo Price: $519.99

Basically just a step down from the processor you listed (930 instead of 960) but it saves you like $250 for a difference in performance you will never notice. You can get all the way down to $454 by substituting the EVGA mobo with an ASROCK X58 board:

Which I have no personal experience with, but is reviewed here:

Thanks Kawfee. I'll keep an eye on these. Seeing these combos puts me at ease, a little. However, I'll definitely have to purchase new RAM. :-/

Half of me wants to try and just upgrade parts. The other half can't help but think "will just building a new PC from scratch make more sense?". But we'll see.

Well, CPU, mobo, RAM, and GPU are kind of the main parts of a gaming PC, you can salvage the rest of your stuff. I "upgraded" my rig from:
    • Old:

      Core 2 Duo E6600
      EVGA n680i SLI mobo
      GeForce 8800GTS 768mb
      4GB DDR800
      500GB Western Digital HD
      DVD Burner
      DVD Burner
      Coolermaster 700w PSU
      Zalman 9700 CPU fan
      Antec 900 case

    • to new:

      i7-390 ($200)
EVGA X58 mobo (middle tier one, can't remember exact name ~$230ish)
GeForce 8800GTS 768mb <--- still there, waiting til it gets closer to launch (atm likely a GTX460 or HD5850 depending on price, ~$230)
      6GB DDR1600(?) the OCZ Gold RAM ($130)
      500GB Western Digital HD
      DVD Burner
      DVD Burner
      Coolermaster 700w PSU
Zalman 9700 CPU fan ($8 adapter)
      Antec 900 case

So I'll end up spending ~$800 total, but that's less than the ~$1500 or so it would cost to replace everything "from scratch".

sounds good tho you cant stick an i7 in a 1156 socket board i7 are 1366 socket's and the only i7 that would fit the 1156 board would be like i7 860 which is an 1156 socket and there way more than a i7 930 like 38-50 bucks ... i recommend getting the i5 750 if you want to stay with the board you have now etc or replace the motherboard to like a Gigabyte 1366 board or evga or asus etc :D

    Hey guys,

Bit of a dead end atm, buying a new PC and ive been suggested to get an Intel I-7 and a ATI 5770 graphics card minimum. Currently only have a budget of around 600-900 but i dont know enough about the other components ot build myself (e.g. motheroboard).

Anyone know any good UK bases sites? Ive tried pcspecialist (dont do I-7), overclockers.co.uk, dabs.co.uk, and ebuyer.co.uk and so far nothing that fits my price.
