I'm getting an i7 920, 295gtx, 4~6gbram. Pretty sure that will be enough to max everything @ 1680x1050 and not have to worry about FPS.

Since we're getting our penises out :D my specs:

Silverstone TJ07 case, Corsair HX1000W power supply, Gigabyte X58 Extreme motherboard, i7 950 @ 4.4ghz, Ek Supreme cpu block, Thermochill PA 120.3 radiator, Laing DDC 12v w/ mod plexi top pump, 3x2gb Corsair XMS3 1600mhz memory, two GTX295s, two 300gb Velociraptors in raid 0, and of course some fluffy dice.

Not trying to fight anyone's battles but the vast majority of X58 based system have 6gb ram, it is the standard amount. As is one graphics card. So i fail... to see the fail in this situation.

Judging from some of the above comments from certain users criticizing other builds while simultaneously demonstrating a lack of common knowledge when it comes to these matters, maybe tech critique should be limited here..

You need to learn to troll harder, especially if your doing so as a means to increase your post count. I never said my comp is top of the line, and the price difference between a few components, that you consider a waste of money, was minimal at best and was worth it to me. I haven't OC'd the comp or anything yet because I haven't had a need to. And big surprise at something being outdated since I had it build 4 months ago. Shit is outdated every month, welcome to the world of computers and electronics.

But a good first attempt at learningtotroll

I am building a similar system:

    processr: i7 920
    mobo: ASUS P6T6 WS Revolution
    graphics: 295 gtx
    memory: 6gb DDR3 (always do your DDR3 in 3s! 3 x 1gb sticks or 3 x 2gb sticks)
sound: either SB X-fi or ASUS Xonar
HD: a SSD for the OS, applications, games,. and a new 1TB drive for storage of mp3s, porn, ect.

    OS: Windows 7 64-bit

How did you do yours then? >.<
And btw. why? A serious question, since my tech knowledge is pretty basic especially since things change so fast and I don't bother to keep up with technology!

No harm to Vuitton but they are slightly simplifying the issue, the sets of memory you want to buy are decided by the number of channels on your motherboard and the type of memory your motherboard takes.

In the case of the latest Intel motherboards (x58 series) they come with tri-channel memory banks and therefore you will want to fill up all 3 channels to achieve maximum potential memory bandwidth, which means buying memory dimms in sets of 3 - 3x2gb, 3x1gb. Keep in mind each channel has two dimm slots and you can if you like buy 6 dimms of 2gb for 12gb memory, though this is redundant for most users. 3gb is slightly less than recommended for full Vista x64 / Win7 64 efficiency therefore 6gb is the accepted norm here, except in certain circumstances (like extreme overclocking)

On Intel's last series of desktop boards (x48 ) you had a dual-channel configuration, so you would buy memory in sets of two (2x2gb, for example)

    Hope this helps

I do take said comment back, as in a technical sense they are very different. I was thinking in a sense of minimal system requirements the terminology would be considered almost identical.

As example: Nvidia refers to all their "video cards" as a "GPU" and a dual gpu is called a "dual chip graphics card" yet on the box the system requirements would state "video card" most of the time. It's all in the fucking details anyways.

Pretty much the exact same thing I am getting. Though no SSD. Might get a second 295 don't know.
That will suffice us for any game at max. High five!

the fact that you have an i7 rig and dont consider it top of the line for gaming in the first place speaks volumes about your knowledge of building computers; you bought overly expensive parts that provide either minimal or nonexistant benefits, and by refusing to (or being willfully ignorant of) ocing pretty much negates all benefits you could have gained, leaving you with a high price, low relative power pc - much like an alienware!!!

also unless im mistaken the gtx core 216 cards were out before four months ago

    What? rofl

Asus P6T6 WS Revolution Core i7 Motherboard - HotHardware

    Memory
    6 x DIMM, Max. 24 GB, DDR3 2000(O.C.)*/1866(O.C.)*/1800(O.C.)*/1600(O.C.)/1333/1066 ECC,Non-ECC,Un-buffered Memory
    Triple channel memory architecture
Support Intel Extreme Memory Profile (XMP)
*Hyper DIMM (DDR3 1800MHz or above) support is subject to the physical characteristics of individual CPUs.
**Refer to ASUSTeK Computer. Or user manual for the Memory QVL (Qualified Vendor Lists.)
    *** ECC memory support requires Intel® Nehalem-WS 1S W3500 series or Nehalem-EP E5502/E5504/E5506 processors
I don't see whats wrong with my build utilizing 3 sticks of 2gb DDR3.

so whateva whateva i do what i want, whateva

(its not like memory is expensive either.)

triple channel memory is stupid because its restrictive and a lazy workaround for cramming more ram into a system (much like 1.5tb drives with like five fucking platters), and an unnecessary expense that shouldnt exist in the first place

besides that, as far as i know triple channel ram is a feature of ddr3, meaning that buying a board with a trichan memory controller forces you to adopt shitty new hardware

unless you use your computer for memory intensive apps (and unless theres a memory leak, gaming isnt one of them), you dont need a hojilion gb of ddr3 2000; shit, for most games, you are still better off buying 4gb of ddr2 800 with good timings (ocz sells some sticks at 4-4-3-15 stock, which is pretty good, and even better if you oc to 4-4-3-12)

triple channel memory is dumb, and i7 is stupid for shoehorning you into that shit

Yep because when everyone games that's all they have up on their computers. Why would you need any more ram? Let me just shut down everything else whenever I want to run a game. Who cares about lower power consumption either? Not like DDR3 has that going for it or anything. You're right, why would anyone upgrade to DDR3 memory, we must all just be yupees for new stuff, right?

There are so many things wrong with your post(s) that i won't even begin to address it, some serious basics are lacking here.

Just a friendly note to others - base your hardware opinions on what you read from users on a forum like this at your own peril.

    lol seriously...

Anyways! I got this update on my twitter about 20 seconds ago but its not worthy of a new thread so I'll post it here:

Rumor: Alpha testing within Square-Enix has already begun, the private beta will start mid-September, and there will be no public beta. The private beta will last 6-7 months easily and the application should be launching around the end of the month. Priority for the beta's selection will be given to old and current FFXI players and early subscribers to the FFXIV mailing list.
I REALLY want to know where they are getting their sauce to come up with this rumor. Whatever... Carry on!

Idk what they will be but I hope they post them on the official website asap so I know how much money to save up for parts. Also it would help so I could start looking for sales on newegg, microcenter & other sites for the stuff I need for it.
