Louisville men's basketball coach Rick Pitino apologized Wednesday after details emerged about his 2003 sexual encounter with a woman charged with trying to extort $10 million from him.
Speaking without notes for nearly five minutes and without taking questions, Pitino, married and father of five, apologized to his family, school officials, players and fans in a hastily arranged appearance on campus.
"I let them down with my indiscretion six years ago, and I'm sorry for that," he said.
In an interview last month with police Pitino, 56, said he had consensual sex with Karen Sypher in a Louisville restaurant after hours and denied allegations he raped her. The Courier-Journal of Louisville obtained a summary of the police interview through the state's Open Records Act.
A few weeks later, according to the report, Sypher told Pitino she was pregnant and planned to have an abortion but didn't have health insurance. Pitino, after asking about the cost, gave her $3,000, the report said.
