Fossils From Animals And Plants Are Not Necessary For Crude Oil And Natural Gas

Fossils From Animals And Plants Are Not Necessary For Crude Oil And Natural Gas, Swedish Researchers Find
Researchers at the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) in Stockholm have managed to prove that fossils from animals and plants are not necessary for crude oil and natural gas to be generated. The findings are revolutionary since this means, on the one hand, that it will be much easier to find these sources of energy and, on the other hand, that they can be found all over the globe
“Using our research we can even say where oil could be found in Sweden,” says Vladimir Kutcherov, a professor at the Division of Energy Technology at KTH.

Together with two research colleagues, Vladimir Kutcherov has simulated the process involving pressure and heat that occurs naturally in the inner layers of the earth, the process that generates hydrocarbon, the primary component in oil and natural gas.

According to Vladimir Kutcherov, the findings are a clear indication that the oil supply is not about to end, which researchers and experts in the field have long feared.

He adds that there is no way that fossil oil, with the help of gravity or other forces, could have seeped down to a depth of 10.5 kilometers in the state of Texas, for example, which is rich in oil deposits. As Vladimir Kutcherov sees it, this is further proof, alongside his own research findings, of the genesis of these energy sources – that they can be created in other ways than via fossils. This has long been a matter of lively discussion among scientists.

“There is no doubt that our research proves that crude oil and natural gas are generated without the involvement of fossils. All types of bedrock can serve as reservoirs of oil,” says Vladimir Kutcherov, who adds that this is true of land areas that have not yet been prospected for these energy sources.

But the discovery has more benefits. The degree of accuracy in finding oil is enhanced dramatically – from 20 to 70 percent. Since drilling for oil and natural gas is a very expensive process, the cost picture will be radically altered for petroleum companies, and in the end probably for consumers as well.

“The savings will be in the many billions,” says Vladimir Kutcherov.

To identify where it is worthwhile to drill for natural gas and oil, Vladimir Kutcherov has used his research to arrive at a new method. It involves dividing the globe into a finely meshed grid. The grid corresponds to fissures, so-called ‘migration channels,’ through underlying layers under the surface of the earth. Wherever these fissures meet, it is suitable to drill.

According to Vladimir Kutcherov, these research findings are extremely important, not least as 61 percent of the world’s energy consumption derives from crude oil and natural gas.

The next step in this research work will involve more experiments, but above all refining the method will make it easier to find places where it is suitable to drill for oil and natural gas.

Vladimir Kutcherov, Anton Kolesnikov, and Alexander Goncharov’s research work was recently published in the scientific journal Nature Geoscience.

This changes nothing unfortunately. Big Oil will buy the patent on any manufacturing methods developed and keep it buried.

Hopefully we can get off of oil in the next 30-50 years.

Well you do have cars that run on hydrogen and create water as a product. ;o

That only applies in countries where they buy the patent, and assuming a given country will honor it (or even have a patent system to begin with).

And it also assumes that they manage to beat the researchers and everyone else to the patent.

great, we needed a reason to take a step back from pursuing wind, solar, wave, and other clean energy sources...

Even if you make all cars hydrogen and all power sources wind/solar/nuclear, you still need crude oil for plastics, fertilizers, lubrication, and dozens of other applications.

well I had the US in mind when I made that statement. You would be hardpress to find anyone with the resources to afford such patent with anything but profit in mind.

Indeed, the application and refinement of crude oil affects thousands of products, most of which people take for granted in their every day lives without ever realizing where it actually comes from. Liberating ourselves from it in terms of power production would only be one small piece of a rather large pie.

Granted, the scientists are hardily at work determining ways to continue producing the same products without it, but that process is slow and expensive, whereas society always defaults for the short term gain that costs least. Until you see society willing to look forwards at the long term instead of right here right now, you will probably not see any great leaps forwards. With the current levels of complacency and apathy, you might not see it at all in your lifetime.

But as an example; magnetic bearings replace a great deal of the lubrication issues at least in a vast majority of products; the military is slowly but surely incorporating these types of turbines due to their greater efficiency and less man-hours of maintenance required. The process is not without its growing pains... the magnetic-bearing generators have issues with certain platforms. Reactor grade systems have never used oil lubrication in the reactor side of the house due to contamination/radiation issues - we have other ways. Electric propulsion drives have been a big deal in the submarine community as well, and since the 80's a vast amount of technology has come forwards, especially now with the advent of solid state finally making its way as a viable method. Several platforms are now incorporating components of solid-state electric plants, and the development of solid-state electrical drives/motors for shipboard application has seen major oversight, since it gets around the issues of the magnetic-bearings I mentioned earlier.

Hybrid petroleum products now exist, but in case the name didn't clue you in, they still require petroleum as well (just in lesser amounts), so the process has not liberated itself yet. The other uses of refined crude oil continue to see lateral advances in the technology, rather than technological advances. As I said, its easier and cheaper to use the current methods we know to work today, and until the newer methods are as easy to reproduce and at least competitive in cost you won't see the breakaway. You could blame this on the corporations, but honestly they would just defer it to you anyway; and most people regardless of what they say aren't willing to pay the extra just to make it 'green'.

So long as society continues in it's current state of means, I sincerely doubt you'll see independence from crude oil applications during your lifetimes. That being said, I'll welcome any advance that can help the system evolve, even a lateral one. Right now being able to get the source from somewhere else would be an immense help - regardless of what you might think of the end product.
