Are Yakuza 1 & 2 worth playing? I've read mediocre things about part 1, and part 2 got much better reviews. They seem right up my alley, and are cheap enough, but how long are they on average/would you recommend them?
are they metroidvanias?
^dating sims
>_>
I would recommend them.
If you liked Shenmue then I say you must play them, because it is Shenmue with much less chaff and with an improved combat system.
You can skip 1, but it is kind of important. The game is pretty episodic, but will continue where they left off. You get all the information you need to know when you start the game. Play both if you can, but going with 2 only is a fair option.
Also there are all sorts of odd side games. Including a dating sim where you can score with chicks. lol. Even better: Some of them(in 2 anyway) are named, modeled after, and voiced by porn stars.
So this is why you like this shitty series? For shame BRP.
Spoiler: show
ITS REALLY LIKE I AM HAVING SEX WITH JAPANESE GIRLS
And yeah, you will probably be fine. Probably.
DOES IT HAVE AN RPG-LIKE LEVELING SYSTEM?
half serious question btw, I've always been interested in the series because of the shenmue connection (which I also haven't played, but that's another story), but the comparisons to GTA made by the whorebags at gamestop turned me off
You do get stronger as you win more fights and complete other events. My memory is fuzzy, but I believe there are three "trees" of attacks and traits to learn. You pick one to level up and it is easy enough to level all three.
In addition to this you can learn special techniques from side quests and stuff. An example that comes to mind was learning staff fighting, which replaced your weaker and simple move set when holding a stack with a better set of attacks.
sounds pretty awesome from what I've seen, mayhaps I'll pick up the first 2 if I can find them cheap
Can you drive forklifts and/or play Lucky Hit?
hmm, gamestop has the first for $9.99 used and the 2nd for $17.99 used, but I refuse to order from gamestop.com ever again.
so is this just slant gta?
Did you look at the screenshot? Last I checked you can't make people explode with your feet in GTA.
Other than their urban setting and the free roaming there are very few similarities.
GTA is a shooter and has loads of driving, while Yakuza has no driving at all and is a beat-em-up(you do get to use a gun or two, but they kind of play like guns in Double Dragon or whatever.) The maps for Yakuza are much more compacted(suited for running around.) You can only fight opponents after you've entered a sort of fight sequence. This prevents you from messing with innocents.
EDIT: Also Yakuza's protagonist and his friends are very honorable. So there is a difference in character themes too.
On the subject of changes to the Yakuza formula with 3, you used to enter a mimicked mini-map when a fight started, but now the fight begins immediately within the same map.
EDIT: You can play Yakuza 3 demo right now if you have a JPN PSN account.
EDIT: Added the trailer. I forgot how crazy it was lol.
Hmm...looks quite decent.
Well. Looks like the last reason why I wasn't going to get a PS3 just went out the window.
Ahem. I've been yelling at people to play these games for probably over a year now. Both Yakuza and Yakuza 2 have amazingly well done stories. There are multiple plot twists, betrayals, etc. You never quite know what you're getting into until the last frame before the credits roll. The stories are masterfully done. I picked the first one up on a whim and I wasd blown away by it.Are Yakuza 1 & 2 worth playing? I've read mediocre things about part 1, and part 2 got much better reviews. The fighting gets a bit monotonous and in the first one it seems like they just attempted to cram in as many fucks, shits, and assholes as humanly possible. But aside from the forced profanity these games are without a doubt one of my most favorite series ever made. I put them on the same level as Final Fantasy.
There are tons of side quests, especially in Yakuza 2 where you can run your own host clubs as well as a slew of other things. For how cheap they are there's no reason not to give them a shot. I would highly suggest playing through Yakuza then Yakuza 2 because multiple characters appear in both and they play upon those past interactions. That way you fully understand an OH SHIT moment when you see it in Yakuza 2 when some characters reappear.
Meanest thing you can say about Yakuza.I put them on the same level as Final Fantasy.
Shut up BRP! Let me bask in the glory of a ported version of Yakuza 3!!!
I played the demo and enjoyed the jap sim of the porn stars, i might pick it up now to have sex with them
