Cool things you can do on the ps3?

I think I may have been doing this wrong.

I've been burning movies on DVD's and playing them on ps3, when I found out you can just play them through the network, how would I go about doing this? and also

what other cool things can I do with my PS3!? I feel like i'm not using it to its full potential.

Use Tversity to stream or copy your movies from PC to ps3 far as other things

    TVersity - Home

As far as other things i guess you can install linux on it, to run some emulators.

    PS3 Media Server <- That's what I use

You can connect to your media server through your PSP too if you set up Remote Play.

Here's a site with the firmware change logs so you can see all the little things they've added that don't usually get noticed:

    Firmware History - XTREME PS3

You can also go to the PS3 section on Sony's Knowledge Center page. Can find a lot of little tricks there that most people don't know(like booting the PS3 into Safe Mode to recover data or creating custom themes). Most of it can be found on other sites but it is nice to have one site for everything.

Just use PS3 media server, all the alternatives are dog shit in comparison (they're not specifically tailored to streaming to PS3s, most don't support transcoding of unsupported file types, can almost guarantee that none of them work with soft subs for transcoding either...)

Under the Transcoding settings, go to MEncoder, then where it says "Autoload *.srt/*.sub files of the same filename" tick that. Now make a copy of the subs file and place it in the same dir as your movie is, and rename it to exactly the same as it, except with the sub extension.

Now when you're on you're PS3, navigate to where the video should be, but instead of clicking it, click the folder named #-TRANSCODE-# (if this isn't there you'll need to enable the transcode folder in the Navigation/Share settings) then go down to where it says something like "Transcode <movie name> Subs/Srt file embedded" (usually at the bottom of the list)

    Job done.

yeah tversity sucks. wont play mkv files and clumsy lame flash interface.

im liking the ps3 media server as it also accesses files inside rars.

decent replacement to hold me off until i get my htpc and run xbmc.

Found some avi's that played on tversity, but won't on ps3 media center for some reason. Guess they each have issues with certain formats.

Can you use VNC or something to remote control your PS3 from a computer? I know you can do it from a PSP but not sure about a computer

Short answer get a better computer. Probably due to trans-coding maxing out your cpu, happens more often with HD content than most SD content.

I see. My computer is pretty top of the line

Intel quad core, clocked to 2.9ghz
    4gb ram
    8800 Nvidia GeForce card

    etcetc

I was booting them up from my external HD, would that probably be the reason why it was lagging?
