AVG

I've actually installed this on my netbook and PC and it works really well. I know, it's a laughable microsoft product but it gets the job done surprisingly well.
If I had to pick between the two above, prolly AVG.
dont using 2 do less then using one? something about them fighting each others files or some shit. I use avast myself for my laptop, and have nothing on my PC(5 years strong nothing wrong)
Neither, but if I need to wipe some ass.
Avira AntiVir Rescue System
You might also try avira and use the simple trick to prevent its ad pop up (an easy google will give you instructions). It's free and does a good job at being fairly transparent with tinkering.
MS SE is very transparent and fairly simple for an antivirus, in fact, probably a decent choice for someone who could careless about tinkering with settings. It's not OneCare, which is good since OneCare sucks, but it doesn't have many features for the more paranoid user. It's not a terrible idea to be just a little paranoid online nowadays though, and avira has some tinkerable settings.
If the poll are your only choices though then maybe avast for more paranoid-able settings, otherwise avg for a little more simplicity. Pair up any with comodo firewall's wide range of settings for more paranoia control.
Or just pick whatever. It won't matter too much in the end if you have good surfing habits, updated hosts file to kill ad/shit servers outside of web browsers, and make use of on-demand virus scanning for your downloaded files. But don't use two antivirus scanners, or at least have both real-time scanning as they can come across each other's locked files or create a loop where they constantly quarantine each other's quarantined files.
Key to a good comp:
Do not look at porn, adds 10 years to the life of your PC/laptop
With this logic, a virus that is only a few KB large wouldn't slow down your computer at all. It's not so much the ram, but the amount of operations it does every seconds that will end up lagging your pc.
I know AVG is nowhere near as bad as Norton, and with a good PC, you probably wouldn't notice it, but processes add up quite fast. Just compare a freshly formated computer (not one with useless crap from restore CD), to an healthy pc with many process, and you will notice a good difference.
It's quite hard to get a virus, unless you have unprotected porn, or installs crack.
I'm not going to say AVG is useless or bad, it's pretty good, but don't think it doesnt slow down your pc because you don't notice any major lags.
Well from my experience @ work, the people that come in with viruses either have outdated/no protection, McAfee, or something free. I've been using Kaspersky Internet Security, Adblock Plus, and NoScript for past year and a half, and have only had viruses I put there myself knowingly.
I used to use AVG but a few months ago it started really bogging down my computer. I looked around online and other people complained of it being a resource hog so I switched to Avast and never looked back.
Except there are viruses out there coded specifically to uninstall, delete, or otherwise render inoperable, hijackthis software. I know because I tried to do this on my girlfriend's little sister's computer and it kept deleting it.
Hijackthis is great for spyware or virus prevention but if you're already infected it might not get the job done, FYI. I *do* use it though.
I prefer Avira, but Avast is better among those two.
no option for none
