The new FFXI collection just got made available on Steam:

Steam is the largest online game software provider for the PC, so this may result in significant sales. It's pretty rare for a 6 year-old game to appear on their lists, so it's kind of nice to see FFXI up there.

For those not familiar with Steam, it's owned by Valve Software (makers of Half-Life, HL2, Team Fortress 1/2, Counter-Strike 1/2, and more recently Left For Dead). They're one of the industry's big movers and shakers.

Holy crap, I never expected this to go on Steam. Definitely happy about it. I hope it goes on sale and gets advertised a bunch.

From the looks of the PDF manual, it still uses POL (no surprise there), and doesn't make use of Steam's auto-update feature. Oh well......cheap means of getting a complete FFXI serial key at any rate if you're not into Direct2Drive.

I hope this does breathe in some new "Newbie" life to FFXI. Since Steam is so big and has so many people going in and out everyday, this is nothing but a positive thing that SE has done as far as promotion. Of course, could have done this a lot earlier, but better late than never..

Well, that uninstall took forever and a day.

Download from Steam started 8170mb download.

Launching from Steam gives 3 options: Final Fantasy XI, POL Config Utility, FFXI Config Utility.

Slightly off-topic, but my local EB Games (basically Gamestop's name in Canada) went from a whole wall of PC games to a few racks in the middle of the store. Even the PSP section was bigger.

Slightly on-topic, I wonder if FF14 is going to be released on Steam or if that'll come later.
