    BG Medical - Tailbone problemo

Lemme preface the injury a little bit. In 7th grade I went on a snowboarding trip and during the trip I feel flat on my ass on hard ice. Throughout the next year and a half~ I found that whenever I would sit a certain way (back straight, or leaned back, was fine when I crouch over and sit mainly on my thighs) for an extended period of time it would hurt quite a bit when I get up, some dull pain for about 10~15 seconds, I presumed I bruised my tailbone and got on with mah life. I'm now a freshman in college and throughout the past few years it would come back off and on for a few months at a time, and now it's happening again. I have to shift every 10 minutes or so because it gets uncomfortable and every time I shift the pain comes back, but goes away once pressure is put back on. So... any diagnoses/suggestions?

I had a similar problem in High School. During practice in Varsity football I forgot some stuff at home, one being my cup and the other the pad that I put in that goes over the tailbone usually. Got pancaked and fell the exact same way. I went to the doctor right away when it started to hurt and he just prescribed some stuff and told me to avoid sitting for 2 days, and if I did he gave me one of those rings for people with 'roids.

I have NO idea how bad it could have gotten if you just left it untreated. Should really get it checked right away.

Possible coccal fracture? You may have trapped a nerve or a muscle. Go get an X-ray of that area (since the coccyx is just a bunch of fused vertebrae) and get it checked out.

There isn't much you can do other than taking pain medication. Get it taken care of quickly because it will get much worse when you are older and your spine starts to compress.

If that doesn't help, see my sig.

The only thing that was confusing to me at the time was that it went away, thought it went away from good, but it comes back off and on at random times. Like I said I'm in college so I probably won't go see a doctor about it any time soon lol. I hate going to the doctors even if that's eventually what I want my profession to be.

do you have a bump back there, at the top of the buttcrack? it could be a Pilonidal Cyst, which is pretty common and can get excruciatingly painful.

    Nope.

Pilonidal Cysts don't always present with a bump, especially if there isn't an infection of the sinus tract. It's worth checking out although if there's no abscess to be drained you'll probably need an xray regardless of what it is.

Also, Probably unrelated but at the same time I developed a weak back, but I assume that's attributed to the few years of gaming that followed. 6 hours of hunched over at a comp=bad back lol

Dude, I don't care if you're in college or not or whether you want to be a doctor or not.

Unless you want to explore the possibilities of being in a wheelchair later, you need to get it looked at.

Fuck sake. I hate these BGM threads. Everyone wants to know the problem and what can be done to fix it, and really the only thing that can be done is what they don't want to hear - go to a doctor.

Listen. This problem is not going to magically go away. The reason why it's on-again off-again has to do with inflammation in that area. It's causing pressure on whatever it is that is damaged because your body is not properly healed. You can ignore it and just deal with the pain while taking tylenol, or you can get it taken care of and not have to worry about future problems.

It's your choice, but please do everyone here a favor and don't ask for advice if you don't like the answers you get.

The only problem I see with that is if I had a cyst, wouldn't it be bothering me all the time and not only when I sit down for extended periods of time?

  12. #12

not really, it's thought that the cyst is caused by excessive sitting (or ingrown hairs, if you have a hairy butt), and depending on how you sit it can cause increased pressure on the abscess. When I had mine it would hurt to bend over and tie my shoes, and to lay on my back/lean back in a chair, but I could sleep if I was laying on my side/stomach. Also if the pain is increasing in intensity/frequency, it could mean the abscess is filling with pus/getting bigger.

You should go to the doctor, you don't really want to mess around with spinal problems.

Have you lost a few pounds? Same shit happens to me if I go below like 175lbs, or it did the first 4-5 years after I fell down some stairs at work 10 years ago. Haven't been under 175lb since FFXI

Yep, a classic case of butt hurt resulting from Favre's late TD score against the Cowboys. The symptoms should clear up in about 14 years or so.

It's either that or Lupus, ill let you choose.

Going straight to a doctor isn't always the best idea. A lot of the problems people post about can be solved without doing so. I would have actually been better off in some cases if I simply never bothered.

In this case, however, I will agree that seeing a doctor is exactly what the OP should do. The problem has been around for several years and while the experiences of others can often be enough, I wouldn't say this is the case. If you want to determine the cause of the problem and possible treatment options then go see a doctor. Stating that you have insurance but then saying you won't see a doctor because you're lazy makes you a fucking idiot.

The only benefit of BG Medical is on the off chance someone can, with 100% certainty, say "Oh, I've had that, it was ... and this is what made me feel better."

The rest of the time, it's (real) doctor time.

Either that or obviously not life threatening or random medical questions like:

I have really bad poison oak, does anyone have any good remedies or things they did to help alleviate the extreme itching on my balls?

    or

I just had my scapula removed in a surgery, anyone have this surgery before and if you did what did you do to make the healing time not suck so bad and how did you wank it while healing?

Those are easier BG medical questions to answer and would not require an obligatory "go to the doctor idiot" post.
