For more size comparison after seeing the brief clip in the trailer:
Calling it now, it's an evil Captain Picard from the future.
It's just an Excelsior-class ship.
They didn't have those in Kirk's time though. It is defiantly from the Picard era.
Wasn't there an Excelsior in Star Trek 3 (don't know if that was the actual class of the ship or just its name...)? Though that one looked a lot closer in size to the Enterprise at the time if I recall right.
A gaint ship from the future owning most of the fleet would have spurred at least some development in that direction. Maybe the ship is a prototype and just introduced earlier in this timeline? Either way looking forward to seeing.
The original Excelsior class ship shows up in Star Trek 3, The Search for Spock. When they pull into spacedock with damage, they observe her, calling her "the ship of the future". When they break McCoy out, the "Excelsior" attempts to go in pursuit, readying the "transwarp" drive. However, Scotty had sabotaged them and the Enterprise was able to escape. This type of ship is not seen again until Star Trek 6, The Undiscovered Country, when Sulu was in charge. However, no reference to transwarp drive was made in the movie.
Transwarp as a mode of transportation does not regularly occur until Star Trek: Voyager, when the Borg have access to and/or created and/or stole some else's Transwarp conduits located throughout several quadrants.
True, but the age of Kirk is still going to be linear.
I love how this thread can just throw down Treky geekiness. Love it.
did the salvage anything from the ships that came back in time in the first one? could speed up tech development or something, idk
Okay, I'll correct my statement and say that it's logical given that they're making this guy the alternate Khan and in the original he flew a Miranda-class Reliant I'm pretty sure this ship is meant to be that counterpart. Excelsior is the only one that makes sense.
I think I read that the official hand-wave for the different bridge/technology of the Enterprise was that they made advances based off scans of the future-Romulan ship made by the Federation ship that encountered it at the beginning of the movie. There was also originally a subplot of the future-Romulan crew being captured by Klingons in between their arrival and Spock's arrival, so I think they carved out plenty of leeway to introduce new/modified stuff for just about any race.
Seeing as they've been including tons of references and ties to the original show, it makes the most sense for them to base a new hero ship on either the Reliant or Excelsior, since those were two of the most popular designs after the Constitution class. The promo pic seems to be skewing the size difference, but based on this shot from trailer 3, I think its a safe bet to call it an Excelsior.

Chekov wearing a red shirt? This isn't gonna end well...
Its strange, but this is still the most exciting thing about this movie for me:
