no, it's not just a matter of "turn on gambits and you win all the bosses." You have to turn on the right gambits in the right orders. That requires more strategy than spamming KotR with quadra magic and some mastered Mime materia, or whatever the cheap setup was in FF7 (similar things exist in all the other FFs, and many other turn based rpgs).

and as I recall, there were auto-levelling options in games of yore.... a certain snake that always tracked you down, various turbo controller solutions, and stuff like turning all your guys into frogs with regen....

I haven't played Final Fantasy XII yet but, Kiarax or Domon are Gambits basically an equivalent of the four "Strategies" options given in Tales game? (Where you set the A.I to do what you want.) It just sounds like Gambits are a more advanced form of it.

Basically its a feature they put in the game, and you have to buy the gambits out of the shop and use a small amount of thinking to make an ultimate bad ass gambit setup. Its in no way lame to do this, I will kill myself if I had to fight yiazmat without gambits, that dude is hella gay.

Yes and no I guess. It's much much more advanced than that, but I suppose the basic principal is the same. Instead of just basic shit like "Don't use TP" or "Use some TP" you have basically complete control over what you want everyone to do and with what priorities.

Basically the higher in the list the more important that action is. If someone is dead and someone has under 70% HP, they'd use a Phoenix Down before curing the person. There's an absolute fuckton of target options and actions, basically for any sort of situation you want. With it you can set up a character to keep your party buffed full time, cure you whenever you drop below a certain amount of HP, etc.

If you want to be lazy you can pretty much roll with a an obvious setup and be able to ignore controlling your other party members (or the entire party if you don't want to do shit) for everything but bosses. For those you usually have to put a bit more strategy in to it. But it's very possible even then to set up the right gambits and let the game control everyone for those too. Of course you have to know exactly what to expect in advance.

And yes, you have to buy different gambit targets (shit like Ally: HP <70%).
