Sorry for the semi-necro but I couldnt find another recent "PC build thread" to bump.

Posted this in response to Cautery on an FFXIV thread but figured I could get more suggestions on this section of the forums...

Pulling the trigger on this Saturday. Any suggestions, comments and/or burning desires?

    Case: HAF 932
PSU: 700W whichever is decent and not overpriced.
    CPU: i7 930 (Microcenter has 920 at $200 and $930 at 230. lol) w/ H50 pump
Mobo: ASUS P6X58D Premium (Not sure yet, might settle on something cheaper. Thoughts?)
    Ram: 6GB DDR 1600
GPU: 9600 GT 512MB (I still have this from old rig. Figured, I'll sit on it till the newer cards come out and drop the price on 5700-5900s. I'm aware its my bottleneck.)
HDD1: Corsair R60 60GB SSD (Win 7 and FFXIV only. Though judging from Specs above: might need to redirect FFXIV to the My Documents folder on the second hard drive. Probably quick registry fix.)
    HDD2: WD 1TB 7200RPM

That all looks pretty good.. I don't really see the need in getting a $300 motherboard tho. ASUS has a board for $230 that does just as good a job. If you're looking for the USB/SATA 3.0 capability, try out this Gigabyte board.

Only other thing you might need is a SATA optical drive, unless you have one already.

I have one, along with a spare 320GB HDD, 250GB external and some other misc parts lying around. I may not get the 1TB all together just to save 90 bucks.

Thanks for the mobo suggestions. I'm not exactly a fan of spending 300 bucks on it. I found it on newegg for 224 but its open box which im iffy about.

Personally, I've never had a problem ordering an open box motherboard from NewEgg. All the ones I've purchased have lasted me for years, and they were always a bargain.

Usually, there's nothing wrong with the returned motherboard itself. Some are finicky with RAM, new or used, and a builder may return it because they think it's dead, not realizing the real reason for its misbehavior. From my observation, it's most likely issues like that which are to blame. If the motherboard didn't fire up normally, had busted components, or anything of the sort, NewEgg wouldn't resell it.

I am normally much more hesitant to purchase refurbished/open box items, but I've never once been burned by NewEgg. If there's been anything wrong with what I've bought, it can usually be traced back to a manufacturer defect, which is not their fault.

So I just finished putting everything together and installing Win 7 Ultimate 64 bit. I decided to opt out of some things I mentioned above.

Case: HAF 922 - I saw the 922 and 932 side by side and decided that I don't need all the features and bulky-ness of the 932 (its fuckin huge).
    PSU: 700W OCZ Fatality
CPU: i7 930 w/ H50 pump - Currently running at 4.22 GHz from 2.88 stock speed. Sitting around 38-44C while typing this and installing FFXI. I think any higher overclock and I'm gonna run into issues. The pump is definitely worth the 80 bucks.
    Mobo: Gigabyte X58A-UD3R - Thanks Olo401, it's a great board. ;o
Ram: 6GB DDR 1600 OCZ Gold - Yeah I tried to save some money. 30 dollar rebate!
GPU: 9600 GT 512MB - From old PC.
HDD1: 320GB WD 7200RPM - Decided the SSD was probably not worth it and I'll buy the extra 1TB HDD when I need it. I store all my stuff on the external anyways.

Total Price: 977 + 99 for full build 2 year warranty (I get locked into the price and can later say "Hey this shit doesn't work" and get an upgrade lulz). Even with tax included I saved a lot of money compared to buying all of it online. Got a total of 80 dollars in rebate so that just about covers the warranty.

Running FFXI with 48-53C CPU temp. ;o

Doesn't really hold a candle to the Hitachi 2TB deal posted unless you're just purposely looking for something smaller.

    Dell UltraSharp U2211H 22" 1080p IPS LCD monitor $223, U2311H 23" 1080p IPS LCD monitor $239

I haven't seen any reviews on these particular IPS monitors, but for the unfamiliar, IPS monitors generally have better color and viewing range as opposed to TN Panels, but also tend to have slower refresh rates or whatever you want to refer to LCD refresh as.

That ssd looked tempting, but it is a slower/non-TRIM version according to the model# specs at newegg.

For Frys Electronics, those are some pretty weak deals. To be fair, they do have nice mobo+CPU deals that seem to be in-store only.

My suggestion for builders that are fortunate to have a Microcenter near them, get your CPU from there.

The Core I7 930's are almost $100 cheaper at Microcenter at usual prices. Every once in awhile, they will discount them further.
