Gotta say, that is awesome. Having Ed Norton up there would have been epic as hell but I like who they got to replace him. Just sucks this is the 3rdHulk within the matter of a few years.

One-eyed, no-nonsense S.H.I.E.L.D. head Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) will have his hands full with a whole crew of Marvel super-powered types in next year’s eagerly anticipated The Avengers – and as it turns out, he won’t be doing the job all by himself.

Jackson has revealed that Fury will have a female sidekick, an all new character in Joss Whedon’s Avengers movie. Marvel execs might not be pleased with the actor for dropping that tidbit, but he’s already signed a nine-picture deal with the studio and besides – he is SLJ, after all.

A guest last night on NBC’s Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, Jackson mentioned that he would be filming his parts (or rather, brief cameos) for both Thor and Captain America over the next couple of months before production on The Avengers gets underway this spring. As Jackson put it, Fury will essentially act as a “connective tissue” that links this summer’s Marvel character solo outings to Whedon’s unifying ensemble piece – though it’s not clear whether the S.H.I.E.L.D head will show up in the actual films or in a post-credits scene, a la Iron Man.

On the topic of Avengers in particular, Jackson mentioned that he would be screen testing with around half a dozen actresses or so (he mentioned no specific names) who Jackson says are vying to play “this new character that’s like my sidekick, she’s with me all the time.”

Scarlett Johansson’s Natasha Romanoff/Natalie Rushman (a.k.a. Black Widow) was sort of an aid to Fury in Iron Man 2, but she’s clearly destined for bigger and better things in The Avengers – not to mention, a potential solo movie for the character. There’s been early speculation that Fury’s aide could be Janet van Dyne (a.k.a. The Wasp), but there’s nothing solid to back that idea for now.

Heat Vision is listing four actresses as possible contenders who will test on Friday for the role: Jessica Lucas (Melrose Place), Cobie Smulders (How I Met Your Mother), Mary Elizabeth Winstead (Scott Pilgrim Vs. the World), and Morena Baccarin (V).

    http://cdn.screenrant.com/wp-content...accarinjpg.jpg

Baccarin seems like a frontrunner, simply because she’s worked with Whedon before on his short-lived cult sci-fi series Firefly and its spin-off feature film, Serenity – not to mention, the actress was long rumored to be Whedon’s top choice to play Wonder Woman back when he was onboard to helm that comic book adaptation. So it wouldn’t be a surprise to see them collaborate again on The Avengers.

Whoever is cast in the role will be signing a contract with a nine-picture option. There is also a 30-day hold on the actresses.

Morena Baccarin would be perfect if the charecter turned out to be the wasp.

My initial thought was Sharon Carter, she was a SHIELD agent and would link Captain America to The Avengers since her mother is in the Cap movie.

Yes, but I can see her in the Whedonverse. AND it would establish ever more tangible links between HIMYM and whedon.

Nice Cobie is smoking! I'm really glad to see Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye tho, I bet he steals the show

Only bad thing about this movie is no Edward Nortan, imo he did a great job in Hulk and one of the best actors in his generation

It's like the Hulk is the new 90's Batman.

Supposedly it's a cameo and Hawkeye won't really be in costume, or at least a costume resembling anything from the comics. My guess is that it'll be like ULTIMATE Hawkeye where he was just a SHIELD sharpshooter.

I was under the impression that hawkeye was cameoing in Thor or Cap, but would be a full role in Avengers

Seeing a Hawkeye cameo would be great. It's just too bad they'll have to find a different actor to play him because Alan Alda is just way to old for that.

I was under the impression all of these movie will/are more akin to the Ultimate universe as opposed to 616.

Interview with Marvel Studio's Kevin Feige.

It is now over a year since Disney bought Marvel for $ 4 billion. What has changed for you ?

I go to Disneyland without paying! (Laughs) Seriously, Iron Man 2 was a great success and has continued to pave the way for Thor, Captain America and The Avengers, due out in 2012. Things are changing according to the plan we had developed well before the financial deals are in the agenda: impose Marvel as a standalone movie studio to produce our superhero movies and have them coexist in a same universe.

This strategy tends to entire Avengers, a film which will bring together Iron Man, Hulk, Thor, Captain America and others. Discover the whole cast on stage at Comic-Con in San Diego last summer gave the impression of seeing a live written page of pop culture.

It was an important moment for everyone. All actors, Robert Downey Jr. Scarlett Johansson, Samuel L. Jackson …. made heaven and earth to be there. They were aware of the uniqueness of this moment.

2011 will be a pivotal year for you since you have two lesser-known heroes of the general public, Thor and Captain America, will arrive on the screens. If the movies do not work, we will inevitably wonder if the catalog Marvel was really its 4 billion:

The pressure is there, of course, but we feel that every film we produce. The future of the studio was based entirely on the success of the first Iron Man, which was already a huge challenge and extremely risky. Today, with Thor and Captain America, we are in the same position we were at when we created Iron Man. These two heroes are actually less famous as Spider-Man or Batman, but several studies have shown that they are known at this stage of progress of films than was Iron Man. By Thor in Norse mythology, Captain America because it is present in comics since the early ’40s.

Thor is an epic fantasy, Captain America is an adventure film backdrop of World War II. It is a fairly strong sign: Marvel is not in the business but in the superhero movies:

Exactly. It’s been years since I said at Marvel, which coincides with the arrival in cinemas of the first X-Men. A significant number of adaptations of comics have come out since and they are all different, that the public understands – that’s why they continue to walk as well. I’ve been saying, and it will become even more evident in the next two years: the superhero movies are not just a guy who dons a mask and thugs stuck in a driveway-cons.

The Avengers is the largest project that the studio has ever worn. Why have entrusted the implementation to Joss Whedon that he is a legend on TV, has not yet been proven in the movies?

So far we have been lucky in choosing our directors. They have experience of filming on this scale is not essential. They come with their creativity and we bestow a technical team to manage the habit of big movies. This is what happened with Bryan Singer on X-Men, with Sam Raimi on Spider-Man or Jon Favreau on Iron Man. We have had several meeting with Joss in which they told us that he felt ready to take this course, which we are also convinced. It has also shown me the preview of the first big action sequence of The Avengers, and it’s really phenomenal.

    What is the scenario?

We have a first draft, which is probably the best we’ve ever had at Marvel. We will continue to sharpen up shooting, but we can say that the foundations are strong. We wanted to avoid the danger that the film looks like Iron Man 3 or Captain America 2, and Joss has really managed to conceive as to the origin of the Avengers, the first of a new saga that everyone can enjoy without seeing the other Marvel films.

there's probably gonna be a second wave of characters and such introduced. Ant man is in the works, Wasp, Hawkeye, are supposed to be in Avengers so maybe spinoffs etc etc. Marvel was p. serious about establishing a connected universe.
