    CPU advice i5-750 or i7-920

I'm looking to upgrade a some things on my current PC in a few months and the CPU is one of them, currently an E8500 C2D. I'm trying to decide between an i5-750 and an i7-920. I'll probably be upgrading the RAM as well as a mobo that can support the new CPU and RAM. I have a 1 GB 4870 now, not sure if I'll upgrade that with the rest or not yet. It's mainly the CPU that I'm confused about. I'll be using the PC for some medium to heavy gaming probably on a 22-24 inch monitor/hdtv when I get one. I'll also use it for some light coding/compiling and maybe medium animation/rendering in the next year or two. I've already done some research and seen some differences like no HT in the i5 but it has a turbo mode? So much info out there just thought I'd post something here to see what people think about them if they own one. Price isn't that much of an issue, but only an extra $80. What the hell might as well just go for the i7?

    P.S. I like to multi-task like crazy.

Might be a little high end or out of your budget, but I made a thread considering upgrades from my e8500.

Lots of mobo/cpu/ram options came about in that thread. Get the i7.

the post "seems to be the final parts" and the mobo's after it are what we came to.

Ah thank you. I did an advanced search for i5 and i7 and only about a dozen threads came up, none really helpful. I either missed it or fail at searches.

Differences are abyssmal at best, but if you have the 80 bucks (+whatever it cost for 3x ram) definitly get the i7

If you can wait for a sale, you can get the i7 930 for the same price as the 920. On newegg.ca there's a $1 difference.

I'm extremely happy with my i5-750, overclocks like a champ.

The difference between the 2 is very small. They only made the i5 to have a larger selection of nehalem processors on the market. the main and largest difference is i5 is missing hyper threading which is pretty much worthless for gaming. If you plan to do any BD movie encoding then i7 has its advantages, but the true bonus for the i5 in my book is the $70 dollars saved on the cpu and depending on mobo another $60-$70 since i7 uses LGA 1366 while i5 uses LGA 1156.

Actually the difference between the two is a bit more than 70 bucks.. considering you have to also get tri-channel memory and a 1366 motherboard it's closer to a $300 overall difference. But you do see that difference in the speed of the machine.

Actually, you can't. Have to go into a physical store to get a CPU.

My bad, didn't realize you needed to pick up CPU at store....... but microcenter does ship items, just no those I guess
