I have discovered Kasteel Donker. It's sweet, strong, and only a two-block walk away for about nine dollars per 750 mL. I think I'm in love.

"Pearl River" is a pretty good chinese lager, just tried it out yesterday.

Very crisp flavour, it's strong (7.5%) but you don't taste it at all. :D

I know not everyone here is a fan of wheat beer, but for those who are I'm suprised that Shock Top Belgian White hasn't been posted. It is definitely a tasty beer.

    Raspberry Wheat is good too.

Anyone have any reccomendations for beers like Blue Moon / Shock Top / Sam Adams Cherry Wheat? I also like Lagers like Dos Equis. I'm not a huge hop fan..Sam Adams Noble Pils was disgusting to me. I'm good with Killian's, and Dos Equis Amber though. Suggestions like these would be great as well. Was considering trying DFH Palo Santo Marron..is this too hoppy for someone like me?

I think phoenix covered it pretty well a couple pages back. But tis the time of the year for wheat beers! You'll probably be pretty surprised at how flavorful a wheat beer can be if you like shocktop/bluemoon.

Allagash White: Seems to be pretty much a staple to check out, and one of my personal favorites. I would try this first.

St. Bernardus Witbier: St. Bernardus collaborated with Pierre Celis for this (Celis is widely recognized as the sole reason why wheat beers are popular today. And original creator of Hoegaarden before Inbev raped them). It's also kind of a go-to witte for me. http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/259/7879.

Ommegang Witte isn't bad. But i wouldn't put it up with the above two. You still get your classic wheat taste though not as strong.

Troeg's Dreamweaver: Forgot about this one. It's a solid wheat beer. Though you get a little less of your classic coriander/orange peel from a witte, you still get a flavorful wheat to this nose. Definitely a great session beer. Perfect for BBQ's, summer days, etc. I bought a few Troeg's variety packs and I usually end up drinking all the Dreamweaver first.

Victory Prima Pils: If you are looking for a decent session beer for the summer, that's light yet flavorful, can drink outside, and won't get sick of. I can't stress enough how great of a beer this is. Many people stray away from heavier craft beers in the summer because of that reason. It's light yet has a surprisingly full bodied taste. Not a witte, though, if you like bluemoon/shocktop i can't see you hating this beer.

Flying Fish ESB/Troegs Amber ale's are both solid choices too. Though everything above I'd go for first. Hope this helps!

IPA's are definitely something you have to get used to. First one I had was from Stoudt's Brewing Co. (I live literally right down the street from it) and it was horribly bitter to me. Same way I hated beer period the first time I had one (14 or something).

    Though the first beer to give me a taste of something more bittery would be;

Sly Fox Route 113: For serious IPA drinkers it'll catch some flack, since it's not as in-your-face nosey with hops right off the bat. But it's more of a softer introduction. You get a little bit of the sweetness and maltiness you might expect from an amber ale, yet not too much, and still get to experience the hops. It was a nice transitional beer for me, so maybe if you get the chance you may like it too. I definitely owe a lot to this beer. As without it I wouldn't have as much love as I do for IPA's.

Couldn't fins any you suggested. They had this http://www.troegs.com/our_brews/troe...uble_bock.aspx but not Dreamweaver.

Here's what I found and decided to try:

Will post with what I think later as they need chilled.

I've never understood the seasonal beers. If I want a real beer (aka not a light beer, budweiser, etc), the time of year has no bearing on what kind or style I will be drinking. Only time is if I'm going to the beach during the FL summer or outside in general...but in that setting I almost never drink serious beer anyways. If I'm indoors its 72 degrees anyways, so bring on the heavy shit if thats what my taste buds desire.

And I'm in the "theres something fundamentally wrong with wheat beer/wheat beer isnt real beer/wheat beer is only for women" camp. IPAs are for the big boys. Dem hops will put sum hair on yo chest!

nice, ayinger makes great stuff. only suggestion i'll add to konohamaru's is any of harpoon's wheat beers, like their raspberry hefeweizen (which, incidentally, my mom really likes... i traded her a sierra nevada kellerweis for one, but i haven't tried it yet... been in more of a powerful alcohol / bourbon / crazy roasted malt mood recently than fruity wheat(:, but i like a wheat beer now and then). i'm not a huge fan of anything by harpoon, but they can come through now and then.

wow @ coincidence of konohamaru mentioning sly fox rt113, i just tried that for the first time today. indeed, it was too sweet for me ._.

still a good beer day for me today, as i visit NYC to visit my friend and see tuneyards. had major (for me) score at whole foods, picking up a 32oz growler of goose island dominique--review too fucking long, but i couldn't help myself, goose island big john, hair of the dog fred and adam, and stillwater/struise collaboration jaded. hair of the dog is what made it a score... their beers almost never make it out here to the northeast, and for my tastes they're some of the best in the country.

currently trying to stop myself from killing the growler of dominique.

The Ayinger was good. I would buy it again. The Flying Dog one wasn't to my liking.

I've had the Ayinger but I can't say I remember too much of the taste. Though, I like their other beers.

I kind of just play along with what's coming out, though, it rarely affects my decision to purchase a beer. I tend to gravitate toward heavier beers; stouts, porters, scotch ales, IPA's as well. The bolder flavors (even though sometimes filling) tend to give a better drinking experience.

I enjoy seasonals though. It gives me something to look forward to as they aren't always available. I look forward to each equally haha.

Phoenix, where do you live in NE? I'm from Philly. Get to look forward to Philly Beer Week coming up. Which is huuuuuuge for us.

Was making black and tans the other night

I don't usually drink Guinness, but it was the only beer that I could think of to make it work with short notice

Found this at a beer and wine store, and decided to give it a try. It's not bad. Adding it to the list of wheat beers I'd drink again.

Went to Cigar City brewery yesterday. These were sitting right next to the bathroom haha, so awesome and beautiful. I wanted to just grab a barrel and run away to my car. If it wasnt so heavy I definitely could have. Apple brandy barrels that they age Big Sound Scotch Ale in, just sounds so amazing and the normal Scotch Ale gets great reviews. No idea when they're going to tap this beer, but damn I hope I get to try it. http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/17981/46366

And started brewing beer too. First couple ones were soso, but the last IPA we just started drinking was incredible. Really strong (no idea what %, has to be at least 10% and maybe more) but you cant taste the alcohol at all and the overall flavor was pretty sweet. Roommate and I were really impressed with ourselves.

Havent taken a pic of the IPA (has good color) but heres a Wee Heavy we got brewing.

really weird to open up a thread after so long and be greeted by my own face._.

cigar city beer looks great (edit: if i recall, i've only had their cedar aged IPA, and marron acidifie). re: IPAs, yeah, homebrewed IPA can be so good since freshness is such a factor with those beers. dry hopping is especially effective.

i haven't done much homebrewing recently. almost out of the coconut coffee brown ale i made, which was great. yesterday i drank a bottle of the first beer my friend and i made, the normal version of which is excellent (we lucked out), but the "bourbon soaked oak cube aged" version is a travesty. left the beer on oak way too long, so for the first year it tasted like melting and drinking a 2x4 (very unpleasant). the oak is calming down, but it's still a bit of a disaster (i had an oaked one yesterday). try again next year (2 bottles left).

on the commercial beer front, i've been most impressed recently by funky buddha in boca raton florida (bar / lounge that brews their own beer). someone sent me a bottle of their "no crust" peanut butter and jelly beer. the idea sounds ridiculous, but the execution is perfect (smells exactly like peanut butter and jelly, tastes like peanut butter and chocolate with a nice american brown ale underneath). they make a maple bacon coffee porter / stout that everyone raves about, but i couldn't drink it even if i had the beer trading ammo to acquire it(: (vegetarian). strongly suggest anyone near boca raton hit funky buddha.

tried founders devil dancer recently. that was quite good, though the summit hops can turn people off (have a tendency to make the beer taste like green onions). i'm asking my brain what i've been drinking lately, and it's returning a "file not found" message. lot of homebrew i think. brooklyn black chocolate stout. sam adams wee heavy. lagunitas undercover shutdown.

edit: if i haven't plugged them already, i strongly suggest anything by maine beer co., particularly their hoppy red ale, zoe. haven't been this impressed with a new (or new to me) brewery in a long time.

double posting to say firestone walker parabola. holy shit @ this beer... should still be available at some stores. if you're a beer guy/gal or are interested in trying the best, call around and see if anyone has this, then buy it if you can. probably the best imperial stout i've ever had (and i've had a lot of imperial stouts ._.).

hmm. i don't know if firestone walker has distro in NC, but NC (and you + your friends) probably have heavy enough hitters (so to speak) to trade for parabola if you're really interested ( http://beeradvocate.com/forum/list/10 "ISO" = in search of, "FT" = for trade; people trade beer via mail, usually including various local "extras" to help make up for the expense of shipping as well as just a cool convention). NC has pisgah, olde hickory, foothills. people always looking for beer from those breweries i think.
