    Building PC, Need Advice

    I was playing around with configurations and I found something I was happy with:

    http://i45.tinypic.com/31695w7.png

    The price shown is what the company wants to charge for assembly, without shipping. Shipping is $48.17 additionally, totaling $859.72.
    I then decided to go onto Newegg and price the items, or something very similarly (at least within compatibility) and came up with this list and total.

    $129.99 :: ATI Radeon HD 5750 1GB 128-bit GDDR5
    $199.99 :: Core i5-750 Lynnfield 2.66GHz Quad Core
    $104.99 :: GIGABYTE GA-P55M-UD2 LGA 1156 Board
    $151.98 :: Cooler Master Silent Pro 700W PSU + 2x2GB DDR3 PC3 10660 SDRAM
    $29.99 :: Thermaltake Silent 1156 CLP0552 92mm CPU Cooler
    $19.99 :: LG Black 22X DVD+R 8X DVD+RW
    $44.99 :: Western Digital Caviar Blue 250GB 7200RPM 3.5"
    $49.99 :: Rosewill CHALLENGER Black Gaming ATX Mid Tower Computer Case

    $731.91 including all shipping. I'm trying to do this with a low budget and am wondering if there's anything that compares well with what I've picked out that will allow me to shave a few bucks. I'm not trying to build the greatest PC, I'm just wanting something that I can game on for the next year or so reliably. Also want to check that everything I've listed does actually go together, as this is only my second build.

    All input is greatly appreciated.

    You seem to have missed RAM in your newegg spec so likely that is where some of the $100 saving comes from.

    I haven't found much that would save you any money. I live in the UK and all the good deals here are totally different it seems.

    You could drop the cpu cooler and just use the stock one if you don't plan to overclock, thou not much of a saving.

    Edit I see the psu has ram with it as a combo deal, btw you don't need that much wattage for your system either.

    I have a 1TB WD external as well as W7 ready to install. What wattage should I be okay with if 700 is too much?

    700 is technically more than what your gonna use, doesn't hurt anything . But don't worry about it. Be like the rest of the cool kids. Get another 5700 down the road. When u can.

    And dunno bout you but i don't trust externals Hds. =\ but gl

    I noticed you picked out a smaller hard drive when pricing your own build out. 250GB really isn't that much these days with games that take 10+ gigs each, plus audio & video files you might download. Let's stick with a 500 for now and try to cut costs elsewhere.

    How's this look? A more balanced machine and I managed to trim about $30.. Let me know if you have a question:

    Speaking of HDD's being too small, my 150GB raptor is out of space... I can't decide if I should buy another bigger one, reformat and install things onto other drive instead, or just move steam games over to the 2nd larger drive =/

    Can't help but notice that the $30 you shaved off is because there's no CPU cooler olo <.<a

    Not to derail, but may I ask what company you're using to do the assembly?

    The company I had that quote from is www.lucomputers.com. It's where I got my last low-end PC from for relatively cheap.

    The hell, for middle range Athlon is just as good, if not better (see Deneb posted above).

    Good eye! Actually that was a calculated move.. I assumed since this machine was being built as a holdover for a while just to play newer games, that we wouldn't need to overclock. Therefore AMD's stock cooler would be sufficient.

    AMD stock cooler is perfectly fine if you're not overclocking, and midrange AMD beats the hell out of midrange Intel.

    Cheaper and better than the Intel listed in OP: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-727-_-Product

    and mobo: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813128435

    Games typically don't benefit a whole lot from being installed on a fast drive, other than load times.

    edit: $45 for a 250gb 7200 drive is a ripoff. You can get 1TB drives for only twice that amount.

    serious savings advice: try amazon prime and tigerdirect as additional resources. i tend to save much, much more money from AP and TD because they don't charge sales tax to CA residents, as opposed to Newegg, which is required to tax us.

    Also don't forget 2 essential things: Operating system and virus software.

    Thanks for everyone's input. Finally decided on something that isn't far at all from what I had set out to get originally, for much less. In fact the specs on what I ended up buying from mWave make me far happier than what I was originally intending on getting from LU Computers.

    http://i45.tinypic.com/14in0qh.png
    Can pretty clearly see everything that I bought but:

    CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 955 3.2GHz (Deneb)
    Board: ASUS M4A78T-E AMD 790GX
    GPU: Sapphire HD 5750 1GB DDR5
    Ram: 4GB (2x2GB) Kingston DDR3 PC3-10600 1333mhz
    HDD: Hitachi 1TB @ 7200RPM

    and Samsung DVDR drive with a generic case and 500w PSU for over $150 cheaper than the original estimate for the i5-750 system.

    I am very happy, now to actually get it in. And thanks for pointing me back in the direction of AMD to all the various people that did. I didn't actually want an Intel build anyway ;o
