Typical nub building PC needs advice thread

Trying to build a PC for gaming(mostly FFXIV, D3 and SC2 atm) and some graphic design work(working on degree with CG background). Not looking for the omgwow PC but something pretty powerful that will last awhile or be easy to upgrade.

inc story, skip ahead to list if you don't care!

I don't know too many good sites to find computers or parts, so not sure exactly where to look and searching just results in a couple sites to check out. If you could list some good sites it would be appreciated, I used Newegg and ibuypower mostly to look at prices so I am probably paying too much.

I haven't used a desktop in awhile, been getting by on hand me down laptops, so I haven't really paid attention to top computer brands and what not. (been a console gamer for awhile so haven't needed to) Would love to know the best brands for the parts as you never know who is getting paid to say something is amazing when searching.

Current build: (Prices listed are after current discounts and any rebates.)

Case- Antec Nine Hundred Black Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case $79.95
Motherboard- ASUS P6T Deluxe V2 LGA 1366 Intel X58 ATX Intel Motherboard $269.99
    Processor- Intel Core i7-930 Bloomfield 2.8GHz LGA 1366 130W Quad-Core $289.99
    GFX Card- XFX HD-585X-ZNFC Radeon HD 5850 1GB 256-bit DDR5 PCI Express 2.1 x16 $284.99
    Memory- CORSAIR XMS3 6GB (3 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 $169.99
    Power- CORSAIR HX Series CMPSU-750HX 750W ATX12V 2.3 / EPS12V 2.91 $129.99
    Hard Drive- Western Digital Caviar Black WD10000LSRTL 1TB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" $104.99
    Moniter- Hanns·G HH-251HPB Black 24.6" 2ms HDMI Widescreen LCD Monitor $199.99
Opt Drive- Sony Optiarc CD/DVD Burner Black LightScribe $23.99

    Total: $1553.87 (didn't bother listing keyboard,mouse,win7)

Not sure if I missed anything or just picked a retarded brand/part. Any advice is appreciated or feel free to flame me for being a nub!

    Thanks~

If you live near a Microcenter you can get CPU for $199.

This, Microcenter is hands-down the best if there's one near you. Their prices are competitive with Newegg's and you don't pay shipping charges, so you get the best bang for your dollar there by far.

Otherwise, just go with Newegg, it's hard to beat their prices, shipping costs/speed, and customer service.

Anyway, build looks decent. You might want to consider an aftermarket CPU cooler if you plan to overclock at all, and perhaps a 10k+ rpm HDD or SSD to house your system drive. Currently, a 1TB 7200 RPM hard drive would be a major bottleneck for your performance.

You also may want to consider upgrading the case to the Antec 1200. The 900 can get cramped with the size of modern day graphics cards, and especially if you want some extra expansion bays.

If you want to feel special, get a solid state drive. 64GB ones aren't as much as they used to be. Or go super classy with a 256GB for around $500+. I think I've seen that western digital HD at fry's for $75. Everything else looks fine.

Thanks for the info. Turns out there is a Micro Center 10min from my house. I'll look at the Antec1200, I didn't really see any low cost 10k rpm drives. I was thinking I would need a good amount of memory since I'm using it for gaming, school and dling movies but maybe not.

Faster drive is really only cost effective if you're hardcore gaming, where the read and write speeds come into play. Otherwise, your listed drive is fine for school stuff, movies, etc. Up to you if you want to spring for the extra step. 6GB of RAM is probably more than you'll ever need.
