Hello BG Car People.

I just want to make sure I'm not the only one that would do the following. I currently drive a 2004 Cavalier, its a pos but it gets from point a to point b. Nothing terribly wrong with it short of, I hate it (no power windows or doors, and other such nice things to have, and its only a 4 cylinder) My Uncle is selling me a 96 or 97 (im unsure of the year) Monte Carlo LS (V6, power everything, sun roof) but a lot more miles than mine (mine is ~60k). My mom will be taking over my car to drive to and from work so I dont have to sell mine, but I guess I'm just looking for someone else to say "yeah i'd do that" or "youre freaking crazy stick with what you have" if its a terrible idea. the Monte is one owner, and my uncle is a mechanic so it's been well maintained.

One owner who was a mechanic sounds good from the outset. Take it to a garage to have it looked at and, get an idea of upcoming maintenance issues, existing problems, corrosion and the like, test drive it yourself looking for things like bearing hum, steering drift, break vibration, and so on, get an idea of a fair price and if it looks like a good deal after all of that, decide whether you want to take it. What's he asking for?

has all the major maintenance been done on this car? If it has not do you want to be in a situation where you need to replace the water pump and/or the heads if they go? Have you driven the car, are you comfortable in it?

If it's more so to help out your mom than anything else, I'd do it in a heartbeat.

Otherwise I'd stick to the lower mileage/better mpg car as a matter of practicality.

$500 is all he's asking, and yeah its mainly to help out my mom... atm she has to drive a big ass 3/4 ton silverado... and thats no good on gas at all... I'll have to check the maintenance, but I'm pretty sure its all up to date, he is putting new brakes on it before I get it so those should be ok

Like I said, I'd do it in a heartbeat then. Will he help you out with repairs etc after you buy it? I had a fantastic experience buying a car off a mechanic that wasn't even a relative; he only charged me parts and a few beers for repairs and regular maintenance.

Yeah of course, think im going to have to buy a CD player of some sort for it as I think it only has a tape deck (boo)

If it's to help your family and you actually care about your family go for it. Other than that, Monte Carlo is a terrible car and wasting any money on it instead of keeping the cavalier and saving up would be a terrible idea.

We don't like none of them there asphalt boats 'round here boy. Etc etc.

Just reread. She drives a Silverado? Has she been tested for the downs?

I want to like...I don't know...make some calls to "Make a wish" foundation and have them bring your family a fucking Volvo or something.

LOL she only drives a silverado atm cause the other vehicle (a Jimmy) isnt driving right... i like monte carlo's thank you very much and i dont like very many american cars>.>

On the one hand, buying a 15 year old high mileage American car comes with a TON of downsides.

On the other, a fucking donkey would be an upgrade from a 4 cylinder cavalier.

Fuck the domestic haters. That car is perfectly fine. Only need to watch out for the 3100/3400 series engines (I don't remember if that year/model got that or the 3.8 V6, which was extremely reliable in comparison to the aforementioned ones.) Nothing particularly wrong with them, but they weren't the best.

(In after hating domestics for no reason is cool.)

I don't drive Chevy, GM, or Pontiac for the same reason I don't drive Kia, Hyundai, or Suzuki.
