Trying to think... is that when you kill some defiant messenger and are then given an item that saps your HP periodically with the objective of getting it back to the forge at the chancel to smash? Think the next objective then was to go back to Kain, who'd get pissed about it being broken and if I recall, yeah, he'd do a nice chunk of damage to you. I survived as a Reaver, but dunno if it's actually set damage or percentage based. I'm hazy on what comes after since it's been a few weeks, but I guess if you survive that, one of the NPCs near him should then ask you to go and talk to other people in the area who basically comment on his behavior of late.
I hadn't completed all the quests in the zone, though, but I eventually bumped into some story info regarding Kain in Stillmoor so I would imagine it later in the chain.

As I'm leveling up and doing instances, I'm finding it extremely hard to keep my retard of a cat alive as beast. I'm currently sitting 23 beast/1 para(too lazy to spec out) 26 champ I think as 41. Ran RD tonight and my cat kept dying to boss aoe half the time, the only boss it lived through was the tree I think? Rift isn't a very melee friendly game as it goes and i'm sure it's only going to get worse in experts and raids, so question is how is this still going to be the top dps build if your pet keeps getting his face fucked in?
I know most of the times I have enrage on but even times when I just regular summon it, it dies to aoes; not to mention even in defensive stance cat pet can take maybe 4 hits before it falls over with heals rolling, compared to hunter and mage pets that can tank elites wtf??

Not a lot of rep, as I didn't initially quest there (hit Shimmersand instead). Is it something you're supposed to have a shit-ton of rep for?
arus2001
04-06-2011, 10:32 AM
Couldn't tell ya for sure. I just know rep can reqs for quests alongside actual level requirements. So... get at it. Fortunately you probably won't need to do the dailies to get 'em, but if you've outleveled the quests themselves, they obviously won't do a whole lot for you other than the rep.

Still haven't found where to get the epic quest like the defiant one. When I was on my defiant it was really easy to find, but as a guardian at 50 I still didn't find it (not like I looked much anyway)
It's called The Care and Imprisonment of Changelings and it's given to you by cardinal Fiach, he is located at: 7463,3012. He is inside the south side of the main church (or w/e you wanna call it) if i remember well it's on the second floor.

If you plan on doing alot of solo leveling, Elementalist is nice for the Greater Earth Elemental you get after you put 20 points into elementalist. It doesnt do as well in dungeons and not at all for pvp, but it works great for questing. The earth ele can easily tank 4-6 mobs as long as you buff it. As far as a 3rd soul for storm/pyro, I would agree with Lucavi and get lock, but you really need opportunity. I wasnt a big fan of stormcaller aside from icicle, but to each his own. I went ele/pyro on my solo build, and the 3rd soul I have 0 points in, in case I want to switch it. My dungeon build is lock/necro. Also, pyro is really strong when you get around 30 points in it.

Is Pyromancer as really overpowered as they say they are? What is causing Pryomancer to be considered overpowered anyways? From what I see on the official forums is the mixture of ground of strength, red orb, and insta-cast long ranged abilities. If that's the case, then why doesn't Trion just make the red orb a 15% damage increase? The other two orbs aren't as overpowered as the red one and this would bring it down to level with the others. Concerning the Ground of Strength ability, it really doesn't have any sort of drawback to it. Whereas Ground of Power has the +10% damage taken. So to go ahead and balance out Ground of Strength, wouldn't it be beneficial to add a "negative" trait to Ground of Strength, like they have for Ground of Power? I was thinking along the lines of restricting casting range to 20M while under Ground of Strength.

red orb is ap/sp boost anyways, which isnt as big as people think it is
Aristio
04-07-2011, 10:06 PM
100% AP/SP which for mages brings the average SP to about 1800. That's equates a far more dangerous output than what Physical DPS get, as the 1800 AP doesn't effect skills -as much- as Mages/Clerics.
While in the hax circle pyros are inmune to cc, at least they should let you kick them out of the hax circle or lower the inmunity, not to coment the 2k spells they throw at you.
Right now there isn't any drawback in casting the circle of hax they should either lower the benefits or put it on a long cd / short duration. Short history: Since the patch run like a chicken when you see a pyro inside that circle.
PD: The only thing that works is interrupt cast skills but yeah again... instant casts :/
Zerocool
04-08-2011, 10:25 AM
Should have like a -20% damage caused reduction while in the circle. That seems pretty fair considering the benefits they get from it.

Just grabbed the game, played in the last few beta events. Since I never uninstalled any of it, is there a way to get it to read the patches I downloaded during beta instead of having to watch it download and install those all over again?
It's available now, I've seen a couple around.
From what I've gathered, it's a really rare reward that you can get from killing the final boss of the zone-wide death invasion events. There is a Lv20 version and a Lv50 version, but I have only seen the Lv20 one in-game so far.
From a few days ago, but thought I'd reply again to say that I got the 60% mount last night from a major rift in Freemarch. It looks like it's just a random reward from anything death-related. I'd assume the 110% mount comes from the high level ones, but I still haven't seen anyone riding that one yet.

I'm going to assume you are standing above the spot the you're supposed to be at. This happened to me the first time I attempted the quest as well. There is a cave entrance at ground level. With the disguise on you enter the cave and speak to Nathor Kull.
Yea, no one was being specific when i asked and then went on about a cave, and then i remembered that i only saw one cave in the entire zone, and therefore bingo. It's just that the zone kind of throws off my perspective from ground level to top level. Many times i've passed an area while looking from above that looked new, but was actually an area that i've passed multiple times while on ground level.

Been debating changing around my Cleric tank soul. Currently 51 Justicar/13Sham/3druid. The 3 in Druid is essentially for the shield and the little endurance, and just enough in Shaman for the non GCD heal. However, Strike of the Maelstrom which requires 21 points in Shaman looks useful for keeping hate on big groups. The main thing I'm losing from the switch is Doctrine of Authority which doesn't seem really like it does much when I do use it. Also 8% armor but I think it worked out to a .6 damage reduction difference which doesn't seem all that bad. Is losing the doctrine worth picking up the strike?
Aidin
04-20-2011, 01:18 PM
I've been running with 5 druid/17 shaman/44 justicar and really missing the doctrine of authority, I'm probably going to allocate 51/13/3 like you are. The problem I've been running into is threat on anything with geared rouges. I run T1's with my T2 geared group when our usual tank isn't online and the rouges keep pulling off of me halfway through most fights. I don't know if this helps your question at all, but its my experience so far tanking. My thought is the extra damage from Authority might help hold things better.
Random question for the thread: What build do other clerics prefer for tanking? Has anyone found a build that lets them tank T2(Even T1 with T2 geared DPS) effectively?

We used to get a couple guardian raids here and there from out neighborhood super holy shit bad guardian guilds (they say they're a pvp only guild....run around in groups of 20 ganking lowbies and then calling them niggers and other such slander...fun guys right?), but they never make it past the front steps of Meridian...literally lol. I'm Defiant and I tried to sneak in the Sanctum once for shits and giggles. Stealth doesn't work :( and I got killed so soon that even by soul walking I got ganked again by the same entrance guards. These bois mean business.

I don't know if this is what you're talking about but, from the patch notes:
SANCTUM
* Assassination attempts have become so frequent that they no longer stun Cyril. Cyril, Borrin, and Shyla now have boss-style immunities, including against interrupts.
Cyril has like 3m HP, and I haven't done any endgame content yet but that seems like it would be pretty ballsy, with the three of them there, any guards, and idk if players can fight, but on a PVP server it seems like it would be impossible if PVP was allowed in Sanctum if npcs are under attack or something.
Shnaklaha
04-28-2011, 09:07 AM
yea idk about any attempts on sanctum, but on Reclaimer (which houses fires of heaven and Maxamillion, host of rift runkies and 2nd best guild in world so far respectivly) has seen a couple meridian attempts....but as you said, with all the players in the one main city + the raid style guards plus the 20% damage buff everything gets cause of the wardstone on the stairs....yea it's near impossible. maybe in a few raid tiers we'll see actual attempts.

I've read in some places they last an hour and some sites (http://rift.zam.com/wiki/Runes_%28Rift%29#Runes) that say they are permanent.

Yeah sometimes runes/enhancements are bugged. There is a bug that if you have a Baneful rune just sitting in your bag, it will proc on any attack whether it be melee or ranged. So I thought I would bump this thread instead of starting a new one to ask some opinions.
I've been playing the free trial for a few days now and have been enjoying Rift quite a bit. WoW's just bored me lately (fully geared on my DK but can't spend enough time to get in and raid), and I always enjoy the first few weeks/months in a new MMO. However, I see a lot of threads on the official forums about how server populations are low and how pretty much all warrior callings are dead in terms of dps.
So, I'm looking for some input from current/past Rift players about their experiences and if it's really worth getting into for more casual play; levelling, questing, dungeons, but probably no 'raid' content potential for a player.
tonyg
06-15-2011, 11:56 AM
Yea it is, people get burnt out when they try to do more than the casual 5man content, since its very hard to gather over 10 people on some servers. If you stick to rifting and enjoying the various content other than raiding you should have a good time for at least a month or two
Lostprophet
06-15-2011, 12:54 PM
I would say yes. The only content I even log on for now is raid events but if I'm on a few hours early I still do enjoy rifting and running T2's. Casually, you won't get your gear for a few weeks and you should still have a drive to keep playing, until you get the last of your pieces. Made it too easy in the beginning to get your T2 plaque gear, people began to re roll after the first 2 months cause they couldn't/didn't want to raid or there was no one to, I know it was in my experience. Warrior still(as far until next update i dont read notes) has top tier DPS for instances.
I'd say just reroll on a high-pop server if you don't have many friends/sentimental value to your current server, I did it and it kept me logging in game.

If you can't score a good guild, you're pretty much SOL once you hit 50. That was basically my problem since my play times vary, nor am I exactly looking to replicate my days of FFXI where Rift looks like a work schedule with events damn near every night. I know I lobbed a complaint at Trion about their Reaver nerfs (my "main" then), but I guess that was just a pre-cursor to the eventual ass rape Warrior souls seemingly got in later patches. On a more general note, and related to my initial point, the rep grind could've filled in for solo content at 50 if it wasn't so artificially bloated in time sink on top of the actual rewards not being so shitty. Those who managed to grind Icewatch before nerfs got lucky, as they more or less tripled the time needed.
Leveling had some rough spots here and there when it came to jumping areas, but overall, that process wasn't too bad. Like with the rep grind, planar rewards could use some tweaks so maybe you could actually buy and equip rift gear before you've totally outleveled it.

Well for one thing, take the official forums with a grain of salt. Like every other official forum, it is full of people who Q_Q about anything and everything. What's the most important is if you enjoy playing the game. I'm technically on one of the lowest populated server (from some source that tries to track it), and I never notice it.
Well in a sense I do notice that my server is behind a bit because only my guild has completed all content on the Guardian side, but what's amazing is that there are now 5 or 6 other Guardian guilds which are just now starting to tackle the first raid area. This is all very recent, and I know you're not looking for raid content... but it's sort of a way to show that the game, even on a low population server is still very active.
Apart from raiding, this game is very casual friendly in my opinion. You'll obviously be getting gear at a slower pace, but it is still very easy to progress your character with only logging in for a couple hours or so. I absolutely loved leveling my first character to 50 through questing and running the appropriate dungeon once. Coming from FFXI it was a nice change of pace.
If you only intend to play for a few hours here and there, then there will always be content for you to enjoy. Sometimes when I'm bored I will go close some Rifts or do a PvP match, or go do some achievements. I may consider even slowly leveling another character or something hah.

My favorite part is not being required to log in every day like in XI. Technically we raid 4 nights a week but in reality we could do it all in one, which leaves the rest of the week open to whatever. This of course will change once HK is released, but for now, it's really nice.

I must agree with the others...when it comes to forums people exist to complain. Those that are quite happy with what they are doing will often not make their way to the forums; or if they do...they don't deal with the childish posts.

Hello Lisa! Thank you for contacting us regarding RIFT. There are a couple of things your friend can do. First, he can setup a new account and follow the Ascend-a-friend link that you send him. Secondly, after he purchases the game, he can send in the information of the friend that ascended him (or he ascended) and we can link the accounts that way. If you have any additional questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to let us know. Thank you for your continued support of Trion Worlds and for playing RIFT. Your reference number for this ticket is 110616-001963. Sincerely, Jason A. Technical & Account Support Trion Worlds Inc.
There we go so you can do the game and then do the refer :)

If you're planning on buying the game, this weekend is the time to do so since it's on sale for $9.99, direct from Trion. You could then upgrade to the deluxe edition for another $10.

I rolled a Defiant on Greythorn, Greybriar something like that. I saw your guild was Guardian and, even though it may seem petty, I just really didn't like the Guardian characters I started. Maybe once I get a bit more experienced with the game I'll roll one on your server, or if I want to get into some pvp.

Perhaps there is someone here that can do a refer a friend for the server you went on.

I am currently rolling a tank. He's PLD/Reav/WarL ... I am putting a lot of points into PLD as my main soul and having fun with it. I know people say play what you have fun with, but people telling me that Raver is a better tank than Paladin.. this true? He is only 13 at the moment. Any tips or builds I can look at. Have found a couple, but want to see if any BG rifters have any advice? Also, what stats should I focus on" STR>Endurance> Dex > Hit?
Thanks for any advice !

it might be easier to hold aggro as a main reaver prior to 40, but I would go with either pld or vk.
when it comes to stat-priority: endurance/toughness(until expert cap) > block > str > hit > parry/dodge > dex

No update button and my memory is a little fuzzy, but I thought it would allow you to update and then gray out the play button after until the shards went back up, no?
Edit: Derp. Checked shard status on riftgame. Says under maintenance, but still thought it would allow update to d/l.

Crafting...I'm feeling there isn't much reward for leveling skills. I have everything but Apothecary leveled across a few characters and was working on plaques and fame for recipes but it just seems so pointless when I can't find the best of any slot for any calling among things I can craft. I'm not so much in it for the money, I just want that old FFXI feeling of signing a Awesome Item +1, but no craftable item is really awesome, and none of the ingredients (that I've seen so far) are that difficult to obtain. Any thoughts?
Neoscrilla
06-24-2011, 11:17 AM
All I can suggest is to keep stacking them plaques and hope for a HQ system to be implemented in the future. I did dailies every single day since I got 50, have bought every recipe for Rune and Outfitter, and have thousands of marks and like 15-20 plaques for each. After I got everything, I continued to do the dailies until I simply ran out of mats. Now I dont even bother because I dont see a point and I dont have time to farm fucking soulhide and shit. Being able to socket gear with a 300 skill or something might be nice, but crafting is held in such low regard in my guild that nobody even does the crafting rifts anymore aside from me and a few friends. One can only hope for HQ ability in the future, but I sure would like some new recipes soon. It seems that runecrafter and apothecary are the only ones that get consistent work. Nobody ever asks me for outfitter shit, lol.
Melena
06-24-2011, 11:18 AM
Right now crafting is mainly for gearing alts so you can skip T1's and go straight to T2's. Runecrafting makes retarded amounts of money if that's what you want, but that's it besides the obvious gathering professions. Apothecary may get some love as more guilds start raiding, but even then, we have 1 in our guild who volunteered to be our flask/potion bitch.

Yeah, the fact crafting is often behind rewards from quests or dungeons was one of those ;_; things I found while playing. I'd originally taken up weaponsmithing for my warrior, figuring since things were new, economy wasn't set, and so on, I'd be able to make myself appropriate weapons as I leveled and such, but that never really happened since I seemed to stay slightly ahead of the curve based on resource locations and the general levels of the areas they were in.
Melena

For soloing i'd say Ranger with anything else and have your pet tank. Or Bladedancer with at least 13 points if Riftstalker for Rift Scavenger, which pretty much heals you to full after every mob depending on how many combo points you leave on mobs.
For dungeons almost every build is built around using Deadly Strike from BD which gives you the Deadly Dance buff which increases your next 3 combo point abilities by 105% with 5 points.

This is one of the issues i have with the game and something that i'm not used to since i've never played a raiding progression mmo before. Seems that the majority of people only log on for raid nights and that's it. I suppose it's just not this game but this model. Pvp servers have lots going on, but pve servers have the problem like Alderaan said.
On pve you can raid or pick flowers. Throwing your pvp armor on, walking into the opposite factions aoe's in raid rift/invasion, then turning your flag on will lead to some fun though.

I retired my warrior so take this with a grain of salt, but
Champion is good for DPS, Paragon and Riftblade (or PvP soul) being your 2nd and 3rd respectively. Beastmaster is good for levelling and not very widely used in PvE or PvP (not to say it's bad... game is young and many things aren't explored). Riftblade main with Sword/Shield sub Paladin for defense and 1h Weapon Specialisation can work nicely.
For tanking, some combination of Paladin/Warlord/Reaver/VoidKnight. Warlord and Reaver have great defensive traits and AoE threat. Paladin and Voidknight is basically Physical vs Magical reduction.
Pyree

Yeah, Byriel is active and it is at 1.8...
if you want to read up on warrior tanking, just check ciderhelm's site now that he went over to rift
http://ciderhelm.com
if its too much information at once (which it kinda is) Ill try my best to give pointers on which souls to use etc.
Well for being level 20, it's not that big of a deal. Paladin seems easiest with Warlord/Reaver as 'subs'. So far, it's worked out pretty well. It gets hairy sometimes when somebody pulls mobs from different packs by mistake etc but so far, the Paladin (for me anyway) seems to work fine especially at level 20.
Is there a BG type site for Rift? I am trying to find a place with a decent amount of info for me to read over about souls and such, and I hesitate to trust stuff on official forums.

Leveling in this game was retard easy. I got a Cleric to 38, didn't like it and rerolled Mage. It hit 50 yesterday, and my account is all of 2.5 weeks old. Could just tell you, but it should become reasonably apparent as you play whether your spec is any good, and what you should be choosing. It's cheap to change setup at any time.
What I will say is that the best setup is rarely to balance the 3 souls in your role in terms of points invested.
EDIT: As a Rogue, DEX is your best offensive stat point-for-point. 1DEX = 1crit and 0.5 attack power. Then STR is just 0.5 attack power. Crit vs Attack Power is difficult.

You can spec how you want but I prefer this build.
@25 http://rift.zam.com/en/stc.html?t=0MVpM.VbdA0M0o.VG0h
Eventually you do a full bladedancer/assassin/riftstalker build.
This is what mine looked like at 50.

Fill in assassin last.
Question: I've been leveling my Rogue (now 40) and I can use bard for leveling purely for buffs/heals/survivability. With that being said, I'm also leveling my warrior which is almost 29 yet I find myself having less option for survivability. There are no 'bandages' in this game and all I've seen is quick drinking pots or healing pots (which seem to have a super long cooldown). What else can I do for more survivability? I'm just tired of killing 3-4 mobs then having to drink etc.

Looks like you're spawning on one of the layers stacked on that alter because your feet look sunk in a bit and walking forward you clip the ground by that inch or so and puts the base of your characters hitbox below the constructed ground allowing you to fall.
A simple jump then walk forward or jump forward should fix the problem and shouldn't happen again.

So I'm almost 44 on my rogue but from what I've read, Bard is kind of weak for PvE and PvP still feels too overwhelming for me as a rogue (maybe I'm not doing it right). I was thinking of leveling my mage next...it's 16...but it seems fun? 09-13-2011, 11:54 AM
You always want 1 bard in your raid, maybe 2 if it's not a huge dps fight. Now that my rogue is 48, i pretty much bard the 5 man's since the extra healing + debuff's help the group go faster then I would in my dps spec. If the group is good, riff/cadence then fury bomb for 15 seconds is a lot of fun on bosses.
Alderaan
09-13-2011, 12:16 PM
Chloro isn't really support/off heals. They're probably the best main healers right now.
Archon is your best bet but they're never used except in raids.. In reality, bards should have all the buffs and debuffs that archons have. It's one of many issues i currently have with bard.
Yea, I love my bard but it seems...I don't know, pointless? I might stick with it as I want to see the 50s for a bit before diving into another class. Also, what's a good DPS spec for pure PvE/DPS and for PvP? For leveling, I level as bard for survivability. I'm mainly looking for something in PvP as I feel pretty powerless as it currently stands.

Assassin is beautiful too but you can't do it with mediocre gear, and I wouldn't attempt it before Prestige Rank 4 (for 51sin/15inf).
Also bear in mind that from that guide
(a) 5 Shrapnel Charges – Deadly Strike.
(b) Puncture – Detonate.
(c) 5 Shrapnel Charges – Detonate.
is wrong;
you should put a Shrapnel Charge on before the Detonate, or else Deadly Dance is not being applied to the first Shrapnel explosion.

Just started playing but really liking the versatility of rogue. Using 2 roles right now with a tank build (bard/riftstalker/bladedancer) and a dps build (bard/nightblade/bladedancer) and will probably have a support build (bard/ranger/marksman maybe? and deep in to the bard tree) The tank build I have so far really feels like dancer in ffxi, lots of evasion and some ability to heal yourself and hold threat.
So the actual question: What would be a better dps option than what I'm using now? It doesn't seem that great so far as I tend to do better soloing in my tank spec but I really like the nightblade tree and would like to build around that.

Nightblade/Riftstalker has a hell of a lot of durability with above average DPS (not amazing DPS, but above average). Marksman is a pretty solid choice for overall DPS, either as 44MM/whatever (often RS or Sin) or 51MM/14Ranger/1Riftstalker or 51Marksman/15Ranger. I hear a lot of people having success with builds using Assassin/Riftstalker/Bladedancer(Deadly Dance) too, and they're pretty fun to use since you teleport all over the place!
I could keep going but basically Rogue has a ton of viable specs right now~
As for Riftstalker, when you need the HP I recommend using RS/Ranger/Bard and otherwise RS/Ranger/Bladedancer. You use the former for pure effective HP and the latter for when you don't need the HP differential and prefer pure mitigation. RS/Bard/Bladedancer is kind of inbetween and not as good as the specialised ones in my opinion since you'll want one or the other. I also hear people liking 49RS/17BD for Turn the Tide, but I'm not such a huge fan.

Decent damage build for a Warrior with average/crap gear? Been 51 Reaver/rest in Paladin for general PvEing, but kills are slow and watching other people murder shit while chasing rifts kind of has my e-peen envy going. Not sure if shifting to DDing would be more productive for me or not.

38 paragon/22champ/6rift is good for pve, just maul shit and you can always pop a melange after killing a few mobs. A 38/26/2 variant is also good, 51rb/15para(or champ) 0 vk isnt bad either.

The cookie cutter BM/Champ/RB spec is pretty good as well. Not as high of DPS but more survivability due to the 12% health bonus for having your pet out.

Bard still needs a lot of work. Battle rez, cleanse, increased motif duration, and so on. Wish it was more like XI bard but i guess that's not possible without a haste stat.
Melena
10-19-2011, 07:19 PM
Cleanse I can see. Brez i'm not sure if they should have one, and the motif duration would change the class too much. If motif's lasted longer, you'd start seeing dps bards which is what they really wern't supposed to be.

Increasing motif duration opens up bard to something other than buffbot. Spending 20% of your time refreshing those doesn't leave a lot for us to contribute.

Melena
10-24-2011, 02:51 PM
It "may" but you'd lose a lot more by sacraficing dex/str for a marginal increase to your dots. If your tanking as reaver, just toss some razor spikes on your shield and stack as much str and dex as you can without affecting survieability
up kill speed? you mean for soloing? I went with pld/riftblade/paragon (mixed tank/dps gear) a long time ago and will never go back.
otherwise reaver-dots will get buffed abit in 1.6 so no real reason to try and dabble with spellpower atm ;)

That one has a bunch that should work. The higher melee DPS builds all tend towards using Blinks, but there are some that don't and do pretty close.
are there any solid builds using bladedancer and nightblade souls? Right now I'm running with BD/NB/SIN and it seems to do pretty well...but I know these things can change quickly with progression to higher levels and better gear. I really like the playstyle of the BD and NB souls so I'd like to stick with those (or at least one as a primary) if it's feasible.

I'm going to assume you mean deep Bladedancer and/or Nightblade in this answer;
Bladedancer defensively only works well in PvE (typically solo) content. I'm going to assume you mean an offensive build revolving around Bladedancer and Nightblade. Bladedancer damage involves abusing Deadly Dance along with Keen Strike/Quick Strike/Precision Strike. Nightblade damage involves output through stacking Fiery Spikes (normally with Lingering Flame) and Blazing Strike/Dusk to Dawn/Annihilate(from RS)/Primal Strike, at least from a PvE perspective. This means these souls are not wholly compatible (feel free to prove me wrong here) since there's a constant conflict of interest on what abilities to use, and depending on what you do you could be squandering the entire purpose of either tree (ie: Nightblade has lots of Blazing Strike amplifying traits and such, but Bladedancer wants to Deadly Strike... one or the other isn't going to be used, which significantly weakens the point of using one of the trees).
However, low point Nightblade is a decent DPS boost (whether it's better than BD/Sin/Rift is another story...).
Basically, I don't think they synergise that well if you go deep with both. They both work very well with Riftstalker and/or Assassin individually though.
I'm speaking purely from an offensive perspective here by the way.

10-25-2011, 02:55 PM
Yep, I was referring to dps builds. I could sort of see how they might not interact well, but it is good to hear that they won't from someone who has more knowledge of how the trees work when lots of points are dumped into them. I'll keep experimenting with the different trees till I find something I like. Nightblade appeals to me more as a dps spec, and RS/BD as a defensive spec.
I haven't even tried out a bard support build. I'd love to see how different the interactions are compared to ffxi since bard was my primary job there.
Alderaan
10-25-2011, 04:46 PM
Bard is pretty disappointing compared to XI's bard, but that's mostly due to no haste stat. It's damage output and survivability is better but it's actual support capabilities, at least to me, are lacking. The ability to have 3 fanfares up come 1.6 is a step in the right direction and so is having a 1 min spotters.
Melena
10-25-2011, 05:18 PM
so 5% more damage, 5% reduced incoming damage, and a steady but small healing stream raid wide + the 5 point debuff finishers are lacking? As well as Ferver/Speedy Feet depending on the fight? I honestly think your over analyzing what the class is designed to do. Yes the 3 fanfares in 1.6 will be nice (no more split buffing) but honestly I love playing around with my rogue as a bard.

Hmm, a buffed reaver makes me moist. Been slowly improving my gear while getting a feel for the instances I never did while leveling. Still dread random throwing me at Konstantin again, though. x.x
basically what they are doing with warrior tanks in 1.6 is reward going deep into specs instead of spreading it out like now. also it will pretty much remove the need to sub warlord in raids since calls doesnt give that much aggro anymore, and rogues get spotters order.
@Guyverarmor
its fine sticking with reaver. I would go with a spec like this (since you were lv32): http://rift.zam.com/en/stc.html?t=0chAE.g0Rz.Vuqkh00z.xV
if you feel abit squishy, use http://rift.zam.com/en/stc.html?t=0chAE.E0o.Vuqkh00z.xV instead (basically, you dont need Agressive Guardian since the aoe-threat from warlord is larger, and they dont stack)
Melena
10-26-2011, 11:14 AM
Actually Meph, at least in HK there is only one spec. the 51vk spec due to the huge mitigation. They want to make the other deep tree's as viable, cause unfortunately they were lacking. Also raid calls will still generate agro, they are just taking spotters and not making it a call anymore since it was an aoe crutch. The other calls in Warlord will still generate the same threat through battlefield awareness.
Im doing HK as PLD/VK or reaver hybrid :/
edit: well, since the other calls need you to put in more points then just 6-10, I dont think they will see much usage (that and the fact that bardbuffs give the same, the +bonus for the warrior itself is neglectable imo)

I miss the old Grisly Works that restored a percentage of your HP for every mob killed. Current's kinda lame now. I know I'm still lolT1, but only troubles I've had keeping a mob's attention when it wasn't AI programmed to divert focus for whatever reason is when dealing with mages and such better geared. This was rather evident in tonight's Foul Cascade since despite backwards kiting the spider boss and trying to hold all the babies, it'd still veer off toward the mage when not doing an impregnate. And to be honest, it made the fight a lot harder than it needed to be since them dying basically meant me holding even more spiders, dodging poison, and trying to get new spawns off the others. x.x

While I'm currently more geared for tanking, I figure I should build a DD set around PvP so it can multi-task in PvE settings. Any suggestions from people who've done it? Only P1 for now with about 25k Favor and whatever it cost to buy the PvP soul, but that seemed more defensively focused.

51 rb / 15 vk for now. Also, there's a ton of forum QQbecause warrior is the worst pvp class and the changes stated don't look to be helping. Defensive pvp won't work because the only incentive of doing so(subdue) is broken and has been broken for going on three months. For now since you're starting, go 51rb/15k with sword and board, it still puts out good damage as it's all elemental. Make sure you pick up spell sunder and ravenous strength from Void Knight tree.

Not sure if this was answered (i'll skim through the thread later), but i would like some suggestions in regards to rougue tanking. I finally got around to buying a fourth slot, so i am thinking of using that for a tanking spec, so i now have a few questions.
1. What combination of souls would you guys suggest? I commonly see riftstalker and bladedancer being paired, so if that's the best combo, what would you suggest as a third soul? Or alternatively, what would you suggest that is not rs/bd?
2. What general tips should i keep in mind while rogue tanking?
3. In relation to whatever soul combination suggested, what macros/routines/cycles should i use?
4. What stats would my equipment need and would that equipment be substantially different to a dps spec? And in relation to that, is there any way to quickly switch between gear sets without having to reequip piece by piece when you switch from a dps to a tank? Forgive me for not knowing about that yet.

1. 51Riftstalker/8Bladedancer/7Ranger or /7Bladedancer/8Ranger is the "old reliable" There are some new builds people are experimenting with involving 49 RS/17 BD and such though.
2. Get used to keeping up blinks and rationing cooldowns. Think creatively about how you can use your considerable kiting potential to great effect (preferably without cleaving your raid but optional :>)
3. You want a macro like
#show Phantom Blow
suppressmacrofailures
cast Planar Switch <= up to you whether you put this one there; I basically use the ability for an off-GCD free combo point
cast Phantom Blow
cast Planar Strike
and likewise for
#show Rift Disturbance
suppressmacrofailures
cast Rift Disturbance
cast Twin Strike
This is your AoE macro, the first is your singletarget.
Riftstalker was simplified greatly recently and now you basically just have to worry about keeping Guarded Steel up, which is easy. The main thing is remembering to keep Planar Vortex up for threat purposes (plus it sounds cool). For this purpose I recommend having a macro like
#show Shadow Blitz
suppressmacrofailures
cast Shadow Blitz
cast Shadow Assault
cast Shadow Stalk
cast Shadow Warp
this allows you to just get a teleport if you need one (if you space them perfectly, you should never see Shadow Warp. It'll be used (and remember, it requires you to target somewhere on the ground) if you mess up the timing slightly. Furthermore I recommend then putting each individual teleport on separate buttons and then using that one in the situations where you simply don't care which you use.
Flashback/Memory Capture are useful for LOS pulls and kiting. Not much more to say about them.
You will be squishy before you get up your Guarded Steel buff, so it is often worthwhile putting Splinter Shot from Ranger onto your action bar. This way, you can pull a mob with Splinter Shot, warp on top of them while they are still together, and start the fight with 4-5 combo points, allowing for a quick and easy 5 point Guarded Steel. This ability is overlooked a lot of the time.
4. /loadequip x and /saveequip x. x is a number between 1 and 9 (does 0 work? idk). People are still working out which stats are best defensively, simply because Deflect is a very good new defensive stat which thrives on Dexterity... and most tanking gear comes with End/Dodge/Parry. Ie, not dexterity. So people are finding even hybrids or full dex pieces can sometimes outperform... it's all situational. You want a baseline good level of HP for the encounters you're doing and from there you can dabble in Dexterity some (since it gives you Dodge/Deflect, both of which increase the effectiveness of your existing HP).
2. What does blinking mean? Same as teleporting?
4. Are equipment slots numbered so that /loadequip 1 specifically refers to, for example, head piece? And /saveequip x means that a specific piece of equipment is saved so that when i switch out of that build, and then back, that same piece of equipment will be automatically equiped?
arus2001
11-23-2011, 05:39 PM
Saveequip saves the entirety of what you're wearing at the time to that number. You can only change armor when out of battle, but weapons can be swapped. Just be cautious about inventory space if you're going from sword/board or dual-wield to a two-hander, though. Won't let you if your bag is full. You'll also get a warning if a piece of gear is missing from a saved set, which can be kind of annoying.
Raen Ryong
11-23-2011, 09:41 PM
Yeah, blink = teleport; sorry.
You can perform individual gear swaps FFXI-style but it relies on them falling into the same position of your bag each time etc. Much simpler in practice just to make gear sets and /saveequip /loadequip to get between them.
Thanks for the help, guys! Really appreciate the information.

Actually, a lot of our (old) problems stems from not having Rift Guard and Guarded Steel up asap. This was remedied as of 1.6. The moment you blink in, you have Rift Guard. If you've used Shadow Blitz/Assault, you have 2 CPs, so use them for Guarded Steel. BAM! You have an additional 20% chance to deflect plus your armor is increased. Keep False Blade and Annihilate up and you're golden.
Also, offGCD abilities should be at the bottom of your macro list. You'll have to double-tap them if they're at the top. For example;
cast Reprisal
cast Planar Switch
cast Phantom Blow
cast Planar Strike
In order for Phantom Blow to proc, you'll have to tap your macro button twice if Reprisal is up. However, during the GCD, you can use both of those top abilities with no worries. The proper way of handling offGCD abilities is as follows;
cast Phantom Blow
cast Planar Strike
cast Reprisal
cast Planar Switch

Nothing's wrong with double tapping but efficiency is the name of the game, lol. If you could save yourself a single press of a macro, why not?

-damagetaken% has increasing returns though, such that combined with other Riftstalker damage reductions you are getting ~-3% damage taken from the last point of Bolster working against both physical and magical, whereas Parry is physical only and luck based (where reliable mitigation > luck-based mitigation). This is why I've always preferred the 8ranger.
I don't see the need to rearrange the off-GCDs still though; if I want to use Phantom Blow in the example above, I double tap. If I don't want to use Phantom Blow and just want to use my reactive (for whatever reason) I singletap. Similarly if you wanted to use Phantom Blow, you'd singletap and double tap for your reactive.
The question becomes when would you want to only use one without the other? In either case you have reactives and normals flying off around each other and in neither case do you waste GCDs (the only time this would happen is on the first button press of the fight ... but there are no reactives then). In either case you are, for want of a better term, mashing buttons. I don't think I'm articulating very well.

I'm not a PVP person, so the PVE ones are less populated? Also Standard on sale for $7.49 and Collector's $9.99 on steam for daily.
Well I've only been on 1 PvE server and 1 PvP server. The difference is noticeable, but the PvE server I'm on as always been a "medium" populated server. There are definitely PvE servers that are populated as well. Just need to go down the list and find one :o

I won't deny that the overall returns from an extra point in Bolster would outweight the slightly extra threat from another Strike Back from the BD tree or that 51pt ability, StS. So long as you don't keep using StS, that extra mitigation does outweight the 5% dodge from False Blade as well as decreases chance to hit back enemies.
However, the offGCDs is something I prefer. Then again, I smash my keys as well.
The only reason -dmg taken% has increasing returns is how simple Rift's method of calculating dmg is. We're just so accustomed to FFXI that seeing something simple has boggled our minds...

I wouldn't say it's comparatively simple so much as straightforward. Both go through the same process, ie
Enemy damage starts here => chance of x event! => (1 - xevent%)damage => chance of y event! => (1 - yevent%)damage => etc right to the end. FFXI just wasn't nice enough to come out and tell us how it all worked :p

So, I did a quick little mitigation check from gaining 2% from Bolster and without on all of our attacks; physical, non-physical and magical.
So, quick run down of our mitigation; 6% damage taken from Phantom Blow, 6% damage taken from Exceptional Resilience, 15% physical damage taken from Shadow Guard, 5% non-physical damage taken from Improved Guardian Phase. Finally, 35% from Rift Guard. My math does not include Deflect but I can add in later.
This is with a 59% reduction from armor; 1-[(1-0.59)(1-0.33)(1-0.35)] = 82.14% mitigation from physical.
Now, let's try it with only 4% from Bolster; 1-[(1-0.59)(1-0.31)(1-0.35)] = 81.61% mitigation from physical.
Using the same method for non-physical and magical, we end with the following;
With 6% from Bolster; 46.7% mitigation from magical.
With 4% from Bolster; 45.4% mitigation from magical.
With 6% from Bolster; 49.9% mitigation from non-physical.
With 4% from Bolster; 48.6% mitigation from non-physical.
The difference in %mitigation are small, however given a long fight such as Akylios, and the benefits will sharply contrast those with the last point in Bolster. That being said, with putting 7pts in BD, you lose out on 5% extra Dodge.

You do yeah; 8BD is better vs pure physical opponents and 8Rng vs those who use magic. Our tanking experiences likely vary in that I haven't tanked any of Hammerknell due to having no guild that raids at a convenient time for me, so my tanking was largely in the RoS/GSB/DH/GP (and lolT2s but yeah) areas, where Greenscale and Herald were my main "big targets", where obviously I valued the mixed mitigation one a little bit more.
It could be a bad choice, but I remember going through all of the math behind it and finding it quite sound.
If you do HK mainly which is largely physical (or so I'm lead to believe?) then I can definitely see 8BD becoming more and more useful.

The lower floor is mainly filled with physical with some abilities magical or non-physical. The upper floor, however, is a mixture of both. With the 1.6 changes and our Shadow Guard working as intended, we can pretty much tank any boss in HK. However, the Lashers from Akylios still hit like a truck, around 7-8k after mitigation and without deflect. Jornaru, himself, hits just below the Lashers...
In HK, Warriors excel at it while Rogues/Justicars fight for the leftovers. That isn't to say we suck, they're just way better than us, lol.

Populations overall are good. The biggest issue i've seen is people geared for Hammerknell to replace your normal attrition of people who got spoiled by lolwow difficulty and the last boss slaps you with a debuff making your tanks needing more toughness and everyone else more hit so they can actually hit the boss.

Fun akylios tip, challenge someone to a duel, and have one of them jump into the water before engaging jornaru. The debuff goes away, not sure if it's been patched yet but my old guild was doing that to figure out the mechanics. Good luck

1 month bump here we go!
Got some new guys in the guild, Darktide being lame as always during P2 on the melee side. For the pulls we've always had a BM pet pull with the tank there and the rest of the raid LoS'ed behind a rock. Typically it works pretty well, but last night there were like 50 million deaths. I wasn't on the melee side to get a clear idea what was going on, but just got me thinking if there is a fool-proof way of pulling that side that doesn't lead to clerics getting all 4 spawns to charge at them?

Found an interesting way to not get adds on the melee side. WOTM bugs it so the mob will aggro, but so long as no one is near the warrior pulling, no adds will come.

Yea no shit. It let me solo that annoying mob in KB I believe for the epic quest line. Let him rape the rest of my party then promptly solo'd him over the next 5 minutes.

Have a 2 guys on Greybriar, Mezraq Guardian, and Sagohzo Defiant.
Anybody playing this game anymore? The 1.5 stuff looks very interesting. Sorry, I haven't followed it lately but it caught my eye again. ;)
1.5? 1.7 is about to hit lol
