Gamepro "reviews" The Old Republic, hurts my butt

I'm just gonna post the video and let the reddit thread say pretty much everything I could ever say about this video. Just rage inducing.

This reddit thread about the review is comedy gold though.

    http://www.reddit.com/r/swtor/commen..._old_republic/

one of the responses from the reddit thread.. just perfect. Must watch video before reading.

I completely agree with this review.

Similarly, I was playing Skyrim and found it to be a real drag. First of all, I'm stuck on a horse cart and can't really move anywhere or do anything. Then this dragon attacks and I can finally move around but I get lost and I don't know what I'm doing and end up following this Imperial guy through a cave.

After a few minutes in this cave, I picked up a book and read through it. Man, this game is boring. The story in the book was kind of interesting, but I don't want to read books and there's no way to skip that. I just want to kill Dragons, dammit.

The cave eventually lead to some big spider boss and he was really easy to kill, not a challenge at all in the slightest. I decided at that point that that game was a load of crap. There's none of that open-world stuff that what so hyped about: everything was so linear with no alternative passageways in that cave that led anywhere useful, the books weren't that exciting at all, and the long and boring conversations were just keeping me from the dragons.

    Skyrim: 1/10.

So a bunch of people on the /r/swtor/ subreddit ( who are going to be 90%+ rabid fanboys/girls ) don't like a negative review?

    THE SHOCK.

I agree w/ most of the review, the game is tedious and boring as fuck, the animations are bad, graphics bad, character variety is banal.

It's not about the review being negative. It's about them saying one thing and then contradicting themselves in the very next sentence. Oh that and reviewing a fucking MMO after a few hours of gameplay, pretty sure one of those assholes said something like "i've only played for an hour, but in that time I've played 3 classes." What the fuck did you do, character creation for each of them and then log out? 4 or 5 people reviewing the game and in all their time playing not a single one of them could fucking figure out that the spacebar skips dialogue?

Probably the most unprofessional piece of garbage I've ever seen.

Gryffes must be one of those "efficient mmo players." I BET YOU LOVES YOU SOME MOB GRINDIN! Based on your response I question whether you even watched the damned review, though I can't say I'd blame you if you didn't, it was fucking terrible.

Yeah it's a case study in terrible games journalism, but the game is still ass.

Kind of unfair to call that a review when it's clearly an impressions video. There is some useless complaining in it but that doesn't really take over the video and the multiple POVs give anyone approaching the game a good idea of what your first month's worth of investment in SWTOR is going to get you.

The review was horrible. People who played for 6 hours like that British guy and then decide to still continue a professional review should jump into a volcano of aids.

what metric should a reviewer use to play an mmo before reviewing it?
    is it hours played?
    level attained?
dabbled in most of the classes/jobs?

my take .. for a short, quick glance review just compare it to WoW, piece-wise
a longer review would be more of a daily/weekly journal about what he likes/dislikes as he's been playing it that long.

No MMO should have a release day review. Wait 2 months then release one because by then you would have experienced end game etc

    This.

I don't think an MMO should have a release date review either (we haven't even reached the official release date yet), but I wouldn't see anything wrong with a summary review within the first week, after 24~48+ hours worth of play, for initial impressions.

Optimally there would then be a follow up blog or something once every 1-3 days for 30~60 days, followed by a comprehensive review, with the ultimate time line depending more on the game itself and how long it takes to reach a satisfactory comprehensive review than a pre-determined date.

Regardless, people shouldn't be surprised if it gets mixed reviews, the player response itself is pretty mixed.

A release date review is the only way to know whether or not to pick it up on release date. "But it's an MMO!" is a flaccid excuse to not inform potential buyers of what they're getting for their initial buy-in. If it's a beta product like all other MMOs that's still useful knowledge, as well as just how beta it ended up being at launch.

Except they can't possibly inform anyone of anything about the game if they don't actually play past the intro.

I like the way the only people calling it a review are the ones complaining about it.

If some dude played the game for a couple hours and gave a full "professional review" on it then yeah that'd be pretty awful but it's a few people that played the game for a few hours giving their initial impressions, christ. I know most people here played FFXI at some point and we're all masochists or whatever but there isn't actually any excuse for a game taking 6+ hours to get good nowadays, regardless of genre.

Oh wait I mean oh my god they didn't know how to skip cutscenes what a bunch of retards!

That was to add emphasis onto how little they must have actually played the game if they couldn't that out.

I played the beta quite a bit and had a great time. No one here has really given any objective criticisms of the game, you know, reasons why you think the game is shit, rather than just stating that it is shit.

Also - "its not wow/aion/rift/flavorofthemonth" is not objective criticism. The game was designed to be different from wall of quest text mob grinders INTENTIONALLY! It's not an accident. I know. What a shock.

By all means, if you'd rather kill boars for 85 levels then go raid molten core.. oops... i mean.. firelands... be my guest.

Crazy, didn't realize there was much negative reaction. I'm loving it. They took a lot of my favorite parts of MMOs but somehow managed to make it feel like a solid single-player story experience.
