This does sound interesting. I haven't any idea what sort of balance could come from thirty hours of development, but this is something that you did as part of a learning process, and expecting a huge time investment would be unreasonable. Additionally, you're open to comments, and I believe that there's a fair amount of fighting game enthusiasts on this board (although I'm uncertain as to how many cruise the FFXI sections). Regardless, I think it's intriguing, and I'll try to give it a shot on my meal break at work.

EDIT: As an aside, what sort of commentary do you want? Since this was a learning exercise, do you plan to do more with it?

I just downloaded this, and then extracted it without issue. Either your download was corrupted, or your archiving program doesn't like you.

I tested the download on three separate terminals, two on my home network and the third at my work. Worked fine for me every time. What are you using to extract? I've only tested it using 7zip and windows 7 itself, both of which worked. I'll upload the 7zip version and mirror it as well, just in case.

I've seen a few of the mugen fighters for Burnout and his behemoth back in the day, was wondering when someone would pick it up and do more

Yes, it's not very well balanced. A few characters just destroy everything they touch (like KB...lol) and others dont really do much (poor mithra rdm). But there's a few in there that are a lot of fun to play. I can upload move lists if anyone wants them.

For comments... anything goes, I suppose. Tell me if you love it, if you hate it, if you would have done something differently or added something I did not. It's just a simple project. I had originally gone with the idea of keeping the entire development process to under a 40 hour work period, to mimic an average work week. Kinda like how game devs participate in "game jams" where they build a game in a weekend, but I needed more time lol. I may make a version 2.0, though. All it would add would be new characters and stages, and I'd really like to re-do the menus with images that are more uniform in art style (I was only able to use whatever I could find quickly on google images, which while I tried to match color themes and such, it wasn't ideal for uniformity.) But alas, I code instead of paint.

I also wouldn't mind making like... "Marvel vs. Square"... which is basically just my idea of marvel vs. capcom with square characters instead. It'd be easy enough to do.

Is Cornelia the Mythril Musketeer in there? She better fucking be in there.

Seriously, though, I would be all for that. Of course, I've played Monk as my main job since 2003, so I am biased. I have always enjoyed the story of Cornelia and Raogrimm, to boot.

nope, no Cornelia... her existence having slipped my mind after so many years! Maybe for version 2.0?

    That would be sweet.

I should actually get to play it in a bit. This will be my first experience with M.U.G.E.N., as well. Even though I remember when it was originally released, I have never fired it up in any way, shape, or form.

EDIT: I didn't get to do much, but I was amused by what I saw. As you've hinted, the graphic presentation is very simple, but you did a good job with transferring all of the models and their respective animations to M.U.G.E.N. I would like to give it more time when I've got an opportunity.

If anyone else is willing to look past the rough edges, this is something that's fun to play around with. Ideally, someone will be able to provide more comprehensive feedback than me.

Starting with Behemoth when he's the most OP character is pretty lame!

This is freaking sick lol. Too bad I can barely tell what's going on and it's hard to guage character attack distance due to the somewhat sketchy animations. Otherewise this is sweet. Cool idea too.

This needs to be moved to the main FFXI section. So much potential for this. Stages, selectable characters and design for the characters. Looks great and can't wait for future updates.

-skin updates on gear (Abyssea skins)
    -Wyrm as playable character
    -AV secret playable character?
    -More JP dialogue.

You didn't make any of it, except compile it together. All "requests" are moot and pointless. It takes more than 30 hours to make a "game" in MUGEN. To rip all of the models/animations and converting them into a character, code them, give them collision boxes and then also program the moves together takes more than 50 hours alone.

I can imagine most of your time was spent making the menus/screenpack (i.e. lifebars) and any misc stages (easy to do, more or less); or, most of it was spent actually hunting it all down together and then putting them together (and probably renaming a few things). You cut most of the hard work out here with your EXE to please us. Which in theory, worked, but completely looked down upon in the MUGEN community (there's a very well established etiquette system).

Most FFXI Characters in the MUGEN world come from JP creators anyway. You're hiding all of it by masking it within an exe. I bet none of them play the same or have any sort of "system" (template); unless they all came from the same creator.

    Don't be fooled.

I'd try it, but I'm at work.

EDIT: For anyone who's going to bring it up eventually, no, there will NOT be an online mode. Ever. We've spent over 12 years discussing this now. =p (yes, I've been around the MUGEN scene this long)

EDIT2: Well, 2 people busted him already for it, haha: http://mugenguild.com/forum/topics/f...-146670.0.html

Still, it's not a "bad" thing per say, but to speak and act like you made it all yourself is the bad thing here. You've entertained us, which is the goal.

EDIT3: My sources tell me 1, or more characters, were "sprite swapped" -- so one of the characters was easily recognisable as Naruto. Slight praise for such an effort then, to rip all the animations and then swap them into a character. In this scenario, 30 hours would be slightly believable.

EDIT4: Well, it's Christmas and there's nothing going on at work. Your website was free to browse so.... There's a weird discrepancy between your knowledge/skills in your website and other projects, nothing seems to string together judging by the screenshots/videos. Unless you're just not too familiar with 2D graphics in general ... but for example the quality between the 3D game and the python game is horrendous.

Guess I missed the part where he claimed he made the entire thing by himself from scratch and wasn't just using it to help learn mugen.

Hah, my bad. Default MUGEN behaviour on my part. =p ; but perhaps where he said "i code, instead of paint" was what brought me to that conclusion. Spite swapping, changing some names in a file, is not coding.

Shantotto seems to have an advantage as no other character can hit her with a default attack, leaving you to mostly use grapples.

If you viewed the readme included with the exe file, it clearly explains that I did not make any of the art, animations, sprites, screens, music, or any of the "assets" used to compile the whole thing. Sorry I didnt post that fact when it's written into every download.

If you're curious (or too lazy to open the readme), every character was downloaded from another creator I found at mugenfreeforall.com. All of the images used to make the screenpack were found through google's image search and modified to fit my needs.

I'm just learning new tools here... I'm a student enrolled at the Art Institute for Game Programming, but I dont even start until Jan. 7th. I'm not very familiar AT ALL with making games. It's something I've been doing in my spare time for maybe six months, with only limited background knowledge in programming. I'm working at learning more, hence the projects like this one.

It's just a simple project, to gain experience using popular engines. I did the same thing with Unreal Engine 3 (far more difficult) and a tiny project using Python that turned just terrible, both are viewable on my website.

Not trying to fool anyone into thinking I'm some super game creator guy... should be painfully obvious for anyone willing to take two seconds to view a readme.

Ya I was at work, so I couldn't do anything. With nothing but time to burn, I went off on a tangent -- my bad
I wish you well on your upcoming courses. Although feel free to start topics here, I always like talking about design/systems and stuff. Maybe not the "maths" side of things but stuff such as what makes games fun or something along those lines, it's been a core interest for me for a long time now.
