    Trouble with PS2 > PC.

So I've been playing on the PS2 version of ffxi for some years now but today I managed to snag a copy of the PC version (unused, from a friend) and decided to download it on my Laptop.

    I downloaded POL, ffxi, all the expansions etc. everything was working fine and I thought I was ready to start playing. I went to play, it went to the normal 'checking ffxi version' screen, and so on until the screen where it was supposed to show character selection, but I recieved and error instead;

Now, from what I understand my laptop meets the minimum requirments for ffxi, the specs are as follows:

    Dell Inspiron 710m
    Windows XP Home; 2GHz Intel Pentium M 755; 512MB DDR SDRAM PC2700 333MHz; Intel 82852/82855 GM/GME 64MB; Hitachi Travelstar 5K100 80GB 5,400rpm
I don't know what 1/2 that stuff is but I was told that it was more than enough for ffxi.

Anyways I have no idea what do, or how to fix this, I was so close to being able to play on my laptop but this little issue popped up, any help appreciated.

your video card doesnt support the game, onboard video and low end cards wont work. The card needs to have hardware TnL, which your card doesn't, hence the error.

Apperintly it doesnt, youre video card is too weak. It needs to be able to process HW and T&L.

First off, just on the off chance it would work.. do you have the newest Directx installed? If not, d/l it http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/deta ... laylang=en The newest version is 9.0c, you can check what version you have by typing dxdiag in the Run dialog under the start menu.

If it still doesnt work, youre video card sucks, if you want, under the Display tab in dxdiag, copy and paste it here.

There are some programs that can emulate T&L and it lags the system to hell, ive also heard sometimes it doesnt work with FFXI, but you can try it for yourself http://www.tommti-systems.de/go.html?ht ... files.html

I used it once when FFXI did an update and my old laptop vid card was no longer supported, it worked for me, but dont ask how I set it up cuse I dont remember that long ago.

ffxi doesnt really work well with software emulating TnL

I guess I was lied to about having a good enough vcard then, lol D:

I tried the emulator, but I kept get an error everytime I hit run :\ I'm pretty sure I have the latest directx so I guess it's my video card.

Any suggestions of a card I could get compatibale with my laptop?

something radeon or nvidia, find one that will run in your laptop, then research and make sure it can support hardware TnL

Most (read pretty much all) laptops have video cards that are part of the mobo, meaning youre stuck with what you have. I checked on the model you have and it holds true in this case.

There are such thing as PCMCIA cards (the slot on the side of the laptop) but theyre mainly just used to display stuff on a 2nd monitor for practical uses, theyre also probably weaker then the one on the mobo anyway. Theyre not an real video processor.

ATI and NVIDIA planned to release an actual external video card, and I think they did.. but theyll cost you about 5,000$+++ to buy it. I did a google search and I couldnt actually find it, so im not sure if it ever went through..

    In short, youre screwed.
